Auckland Section Invite to all North Island Sections

North Island Ski Touring Meet 2017 Friday 6th October to Sunday 8th October 2017 Trip Organiser:

Mac (Andrew Mackintosh) [email protected] 021 547 960

The North Island Ski Touring Meet is a fun and sociable weekend, a great opportunity to get out and do some ski touring. The meet will be based at Tukino Lodge on Mt Ruapehu and is a chance to find likeminded people of similar experience and enjoy some spring touring adventures. Please note this is not a led trip, so you will need to start or join a group, and once your group leaves the lodge you will need to be able to look after yourselves. To help you keep safe, the meet organisers will keep a track of who is going where so you will need to record your intentions on each day, and let them know when you arrive and leave the lodge. Safe ski touring requires a range of skills and, in addition to experience with touring equipment, participants should be proficient in all the basic alpine skills taught on the Snowcraft course, including: • evaluating terrain for safe travel, including avalanche safety • navigation • avalanche transceiver use This is neither an instruction course or a led trip, and is appropriate only for those with suitable experience. The NZAC does run a yearly “Intro to Backcountry Skiing Course” which is highly recommended. Please note and accept that you will be responsible for your own safety during the meet. The volunteer meet organisers will take all reasonable steps to support you to be safe, but cannot accept responsibility for any loss or injury which may be suffered. Getting to the Lodge Head north from Waiouru along the Desert Road for 22.4km or south from Turangi for 46.4km. There is a signpost marked “Tukino access road” near the Desert road summit. Turn west here and follow this gravel road across the desert for 7km to the “Base Camp” 2WD car park. The first km off this road can be rough at times. It is kept this way on purpose. During winter 4WD vehicles only should be used beyond sign posted 2WD car park. The road continues for another 7km up the mountain to the Tukino village. There is a locked gate 10.6km from the Desert Road, which will be open. The lodge is the two story building on the left (south) as you reach the village. Dress warmly for the trip (ski clothing, boots, gloves and hat recommended) before you commence up the mountain road, so you are prepared for any problems. Make sure you’ve had a solid meal beforehand. It’s a good idea to pack all essential items into one pack, taking only what you can carry if you have to walk the last short distance to the lodge. All other goodies can be collected when the sun is up and the weather has improved. Distance in Kms, including mountain road: Auckland Hamilton Rotorua Taupo Ohakune Palmerston North Wellington Napier

Avalanche Awareness Course Magnus Hammarsal will be running a NZAC Avalanche Awareness course on (and before) the meet. This is a perfectly targeted course, as avalanche hazard has been present on previous years meets. To do the course, you must also register for the meet. More information including a link for course registration, can be found here: http://www.aucklandclimber.org.nz/new-events/2017/8/8/avalanche-awareness Note, there is a separate fee for the course, in addition to the accommodation fee detailed above. Gear Hire If you are short of backcountry gear and wanting to hire, let me know on the registration form, as there are some hire options available. If a few people are in this position, we may be able to arrange a group rate etc. Both of these outfitters do both touring and avalanche safety gear: SLR Ohakune http://www.slr.co.nz/page/back-country-rentals/3/14/ Edge2Edge, based under the Skotel at Whakapapa Village http://www.edgetoedge.co.nz/ Also your local NZAC Sections may have avalanche safety hire gear at cheap rates.

Recommended Reading James Broadbent’s Ski Touring in NZ guide (published by NZAC) covers all of Mt Ruapehu (pgs 41 to 52), with sections for each side of the mountain including touring from Tukino, with the Whangaehu and Mangatoetoenui glaciers being the classic runs. Also see ”Tongariro” guidebook by Richard Thompson (also published by NZAC)
