By Cordell Doss The new school year has come and with it some fresh new teachers. The new teachers are eager to teach and inspire every student. We have five new teachers that are very excited about this school year. These teachers have some interesting stories to share as well. Corey Doss is the principal and superintendent for the high school and was the superintendent at Mountain Valley High School before coming to Holly. Mr. Doss came to Holly from Saguache because he was eager to try something new. He really enjoys the small community, catching frogs, and eating Porky’s. He does not like the big buzzing cicadas, though. Some of his hobbies include fishing in all forms, riding his motorcycle through mountain trails, and watching the Steelers play football. Mr. Doss also used to be a ski instructor. Kayla Gutierrez is the kindergarten teacher and originally graduated from Holly. She came to Holly so she could be closer to her family. Ms. Gutierrez loves the small town and being near family. She doesn’t like the fact that Holly has no mall. Her hobbies are spending time with family, walking the family dog, Toby, and watching her brother’s and sister’s games. Ms. Gutierrez’s favorite food is her mom’s chicken fried steak.

Candi Frey is the junior high English teacher and lived in Sheridan Lake before moving to Holly. She is originally from Nebraska (Go Huskers!), but moved to Holly because her husband got a job here. Mrs. Frey has not found anything that she dislikes about Holly. She does enjoy reading and watching junior high and high school sports. Mrs. Frey has also travelled to nine different countries! Cindy Otto is the junior high mathematics teacher. She has

By Trace Salzbrenner School is back in session at Holly High School and the students are ready for another exciting year. Among these students are new and returning students like Cordell Doss (sophomore), Oscar “Abe” Rosales (sophomore), and Leonel Martinez (senior).

This new school year brought new superintendent Mr. Corey Doss to Holly and along with him came his son Cordell Doss. Cordell is from Mountain Valley High school in Saguache, Colorado where he was involved in a number of sports including track and baseball. He plans to continue playing these sports at Holly. When asked what he liked about Holly he stated, “The people are nice and the school is (new).”

Leonel Martinez, more commonly known as Leo, used to go to high school in Ulysses before coming to Holly. “I moved because I wanted to. I wanted to come here and work with my dad. My bank account looks like a phone number now,” he said.

He also said that his favorite part of moving to Holly, besides his bank account, is that he enjoys being the new kid. “I like being the new kid because I’m not surrounded by the same old people,” he explained.

When he was asked if he wanted to add anything to the interview Leo Oscar “Abe” Rosales comes from said, “Yeah, everyone should follow Lamar High School. me on snapchat at the username He said he came to Holly School for holysmartphone.” the better programs. “I like the School may be back in session but sports and the coaches, and it’s a nice school.” Abe also added what new students roam the halls. By Robert Gutierrez There are a lot of new faces from Holly that are joining the Lamar Savage roster this year. Soccer, softball, and golf are the three sports that are drawing interest from the Holly high students. Sydnee Howland is the lone Softball player, which, by the way, isn’t her first time playing for Lamar. “I really like playing, it’s something that I’ve done for a long time. I’m starting varsity first base this year as well,” Howland explains. She also tells me that the team they have this year is one of the better teams Lamar has seen in a while. They won their first game, and Sydnee seems really optimistic for the rest of the season. The Savage soccer team is off to a hot

start kicking off the season perfect, defeating both of their opponents with ease. Luis Mendoza, a first time soccer player, states that his first few games were nerve-racking. “I feel like I played a decent first few games, but I feel like I could have done better if I was in better shape,” Mendoza added. Sigifredo Avalos, a returning player, also had some self-criticism. “I worked well with my team, but it’s still early in the season. I don’t feel like I played my absolute best yet,” Avalos states, “but as a team we started off great but our defense is what needs to be improved along with our chemistry.” Isaias, Sigi and Luis all put in hard work every day as they make the

journey to Lamar for practice.

The Golf team has taken the interests from Brandon Kalma, Chandler Rushton, Michael Rushton, and Jarett Rushton. Michael explained that the team is looking pretty good. “I think that we’re easily one of the best teams in the state,” Rushton states. Chandler agrees with Michael when saying that they really enjoy golfing. “I’m excited for what we have shown so far, and I’m really eager to see what the rest of our season holds!” exclaimed Chandler. Holly School is excited to see what these athletes bring to the table. Good luck in your sports, and good luck for your seasons!

By Taylor Neugebauer The Lamar Fair was yet another success for Prowers County. From the animal shows, to the rodeo, to riding rides at the carnival, there was entertainment for all ages. Starting on August 5th and going out with a bang on August 13th, the annual Sand and Sage Roundup was a hit.

By Flor Orozco Something that has been talked about is the made up robbery that Ryan Lochte came up with. He claims that he and his fellow swimmers were robbed at gunpoint in a Rio gas station. The real story was they were celebrating after the swimming competition and were intoxicated. They stopped at a gas station, where they were told not to use the restrooms, but the men walked in and trashed it. Some believed that the story didn’t make sense, so it went under investigation. The “robbery” was caught on tape. The men went to the gas station and were seen leaving the restroom. It also revealed that they were never robbed. Lochte had admitted to exaggerating the story and

By Paulina Rodriguez One of my favorite parts of the year is going back-to-school shopping. I am a very highly opinionated person when it comes to fashion. Living in a small town like Holly, fashion isn’t very popular. People will judge you on how you look if it’s different. It would be completely different if we lived in a city. You usually don’t see people wearing dresses and heels on a daily basis. Since I don’t care what people say, I will wear whatever pleases me. I think everyone should think like me when it comes to fashion. Be confident and be proud.

I thought the movie was a lot of fun. The biggest positive about this movie is without a doubt the cast. They could not have chosen a better cast for this movie. Their chemistry together worked really well, and their friendships felt real and believable. The movie focuses more on Will Smith and Margot Robbie’s characters, Deadshot and Harley Quinn. They both did amazing jobs. Will Smith as Deadshot was pretty much Will Smith has an amazing costume, and it works well in the film. His personality fits with the borders of this world. Margot Robbie played Harley Quinn perfectly, making you sympathize for her towards the end. Viola Davis plays Amanda Waller. I

thought she did an outstanding job. She was very intimidating and ruthless. Jai Courtney as Captain Boomerang was very fun, but felt much underutilized. Enchantress was a little hard to take seriously in the last act. The others were also good. Katana was not given enough screen time or enough backstory for us to feel emotionally tied to her. She was the biggest missed opportunity. This movie I think will satisfy the general audiences who just want to see a summer blockbuster. Hardcore fans should be pleased with the characters though they may find the plot to be weak, lackluster, and filled with holes. Despite its flaws there is still a ton of enjoyment to be had.
