By Alexandria Gutierrez As the year comes to a start, we all know that all of the seniors are anxious to graduate! They are getting prepared to pick their colleges they want to attend, what they would like to major in, and apply for scholarships. The seniors also have to fill out FAFSA. The school year is a time where the seniors are stressed because they don’t know what exactly they need to do to get accepted into a college. Being a senior is the time to create memories with their classmates for the very last time together. The seniors get to go on college visits so they can actually see the campus and get a taste of what home is going to feel like. I interviewed three seniors to ask them a couple questions about where they want to attend college. I asked Taylor Neugebauer, Jesus Perez, and Leonel Martinez “Leo.” Taylor says that she wants to go to college at either Witchita State University or the University of Arizona. She wants to attend either one of those colleges because they are appealing and they meet all of her expectations. T.tizzle is excited to get out and experience new things in her future. Taylor doesn’t know what she wants to major in, she has an idea, but is still undecided. She has to go to college for at least four years. Jesus Perez, “Chuy”, on the other hand, plans to attend college in Colorado or Texas, because right now it is the best place for him to be and he feels like he is making a great decision for himself. He is excited to be his own person, but is going to miss being home. Jesus is excited to be living “The real world.” I asked him what he would like to major in and he said that he wants to major in engineering because he enjoys performing in math and this major has all of Chuy’s interests. He would have to go to college for four years to get his Bachelor’s degree, but he wants to continue on his journey and go to college for six years to get his Master’s degree. Last but not least is Leo Martinez. He wants to go to college at Fort Hays in Kansas. He also added that he had gone on a tour to that college and he enjoyed it because it had a great campus. I asked Leo how he felt about going to college and he said that “he was down” because that is when you’re on your own and an adult. You can do whatever you want, whenever you want, without your parents telling you what to do. Leo will be majoring in Business, Accounting, and Continued on page 3 Page 1

By Jordan Lozano With a new year starting up, comes a new team for Knowledge Bowl. The teams this year consists of, ATeam: Trace Salzbrenner, Brandon Wilson, Cordell Doss, and Marley Flint; B-Team: Jesus Perez, Michael Rushton, Chance Kennedy, and Japheth Frey; and Cteam: Marie Gomez, Yaniel Vidal, Josie Cook, Juana Rodriguez, Grayden Flint, and Kallie Cathcart. The season has only just begun with the team only having one practice. “At the moment we aren’t prepared for the first meet, but we will be working with Mrs. Frey and will prepare as much as we can before the first meet,” stated Freshman Marley Flint. “We aren’t too prepared since we’ve only had one A-Team for Knowledge Bowl practice and we’re dry on our knowledge,” Brandon Wilson said. With the team only having practice once the members don't feel extremely confident in their ability, but plan to work on that with every practice. “We are trying to improve our knowledge with each week that comes along and though we may not do too great at the first meet, we will continue to get better as time goes on. I believe that we will get better as we gain experience.” The first Knowledge Bowl meet will take place on Thursday, September 30th in Swink. “I’m a little nervous about the first meet. It’s going to be different than it was in Jr. High so I don’t know what to expect,” claimed Marley. “We’re going to go out and give it our best and just have fun doing what we do,” said Brandon Wilson. The team has a long road ahead of them but we will continue to give it their all.

BY Marie Gomez We have a few new students at our school for the year 2016-2017. I mean, who wouldn’t want to come to school here? We have great teachers, an awesome superintendent, and great school facilities. High school has a couple new students but junior high does as well! I was lucky enough to meet and interview these great kids. Mary Melton came to school as a 7th grader this year. She originally came from Florida, but her family settled in Lamar prior to coming here. Her parents decided to move here to be closer to her grandparents. She loves that Holly is small and safe, but misses that Florida is warm all the time. She also recalls all those times she was at the beach with her family. Kyea Comer moved here from Burlington because her mom attained a new job. When asked what she missed about her home, she said her friends. She absolutely loves everything there is to Holly, Colorado! She excitedly joined our school as a freshman. Riley Comer is in seventh grade. He, like his older sister, moved from Burlington, Colorado. His favorite thing about Holly is

Page 2

the participation of the students in athletics. He also likes our good-humored and goofy teacher Mr. Eaton. Japheth Frey also joined our school as a freshman. If many of you don’t know, he is the very own son of the generous and intelligent teacher: Mrs. Frey. He didn’t make a huge move, because he came from Sheridan Lake, but the mere 30 miles is a great change for him. Senior Rachel Kodavatikanti came all the way from Ongul, India! Her dad got the job as the pastor for the Living Hope Fellowship church located north of Holly. She LOVES her new classmates, but who wouldn’t?! She also likes the country scenery, fresh air, and the nice dirt. She deeply misses her friends, family, and the Indian cuisine, Curry.

Entrepreneurship. When he pictured himself in ten years he sees himself being rich. He will need to go to college for eight years! I interviewed Mrs. Adams about how she feels about the seniors getting ready to take off to college. I asked her, “What do the seniors need to do to graduate?” She said that they needed to have EARNED all of their credits. Another question was What are the steps they should take? She replied with “They need to know what they want to do after high school. If they want to be looking at Community Colleges, Universities, or the workforce. They need to explore their options and be open -minded.” They also need to be looking at schools so they can apply for the ones they want to go to. The final question I asked her was what should they be looking for in a school? Mrs. Adams said that they should be looking for the best fit for them and what they feel comfortable with. Whether they like big schools or small schools, if they want to be far or close to home, and what programs/ activities they have that they enjoy. The scholarships and cost is a big one too!

By Jesus Perez There have been many new technological advances this year. Some of them have been good and others not so much. One of the advances that is about to be released is the X Box One S and another is the PlayStation 4 Pro. These consoles are able to play video games in better resolution that any previous console. Many people in the gaming community are very excited for this. Before if you wanted to have quality like this you had to own a PC. A huge announcement that apple recently made was the new iPhone 7. They announced that the new iPhone 7 will not have a head phone jack. Apple claimed that by removing the head phone jack they were moving to the future. It also has an improved speaker and camera. The new iPhone is now water and dust resistant .This is a new feature that had not been implemented on any iPhone before. The new iPhone also introduced new colors that it can come in, Jet black, and Black. For some people the new iPhone is a step forward into the future but many also feel it is a step in the wrong direction. Samsung has also just released a new the Samsung Galaxy Note 7. It is the next generation of the Note phone line. Their new phone has a lot of interesting features. Samsung has decided to make it waterproof, making it the first in the Note series to do so. Samsung has also taken security very seriously with this new phone, so they added iris scanning. This is one of the best and most secure ways to protect information on the phone. The new Note also comes with the option to have expandable memory, which was not shown in the Note 5 (which is the previous generation in the Note phone line). It also comes with an improved camera. All of these features can be called amazing, but one thing that is turning people away from buying the Note 7 is the fact that the battery is defective. There have been over 70 cases of the battery in the Note 7 exploding in the U.S. alone. The battery has caused many phones to catch on fire, and also even a few cars. The battery being defective is due to a small manufacturing mistake, but is causing a lot of damage. Between the new consoles and all of the new phones being released it makes it a very interesting to see all of the advances.

By Adriana Mares Holly is a small town and doesn’t provide all the sports we high schoolers want to play, so we are privileged enough to go to Lamar to play for them. We have a couple students here at Holly High School that play for the Lamar soccer and softball team. Senior Sigi Avalos and Junior Luis Mendoza have both been playing soccer since they were about five or six-years-old. They say that they really like playing for Lamar and have such a great relationship with their teammates. They both have good chemistry with the rest of the team .So far, they have an undefeated record of 6-0 and hope to stay undefeated throughout the season. Avalos says it’s tough to balance school and soccer because of all the assignments, quizzes, and tests he has misses for leaving school for games. Mendoza also says it is sometimes hard to keep up with homework due to scheduled games. Sophomore Sydnee Howland is also a Savage, but plays for the softball team as number 00. Howland has been playing softball since she was about six-years-old loves every bit of it. So far, her team has been doing very well. They have a record of 6 wins and 3 losses but that doesn’t keep them from trying hard at every game. Her relationship with her team is very strong due to the fact they have played with each other for years and all happen to be very close friends. “If we don’t all get along, then the game is thrown away, and it affects the way all of us. Team work is everything,” Howland says. Holly is very proud of you for keeping your grades up and representing us well! Page 4

By Luis Mendoza The Wildcats are on a roll! After beating the Deerfield Trojans 59-0, they went on to face up against the Swink lions. In the first quarter, the Wildcats were up 8-0. By the second quarter, they scored another touchdown to take the lead 15-0. In the second half, they scored two touchdowns to give them a win and improve their record to 2-0. Although the Wildcats came out with the victory, Mr. Eaton explained a couple things that the team could have done better. “The line should have controlled the opponent line better. The defense should have blocked longer and needed to do more gang tackling”. Tack, a team captain, says that the team played good but could have done much better. “We need to start off right away. The first half of that game was awful. The offense couldn’t do anything so that’s a big reason.” He also mentioned that the second half was a good half. “Swink really ‘made us mad’ with their trash talking and their kicking so that’s something that motivated us to play better”. After all the hype about the Hoehne vs Holly game, the Wildcats came out with a loss of 20-52. The first quarter was going well for the Wildcats as they were up 14-6. However, in the second quarter the Wildcats had a downfall and let the Farmers score 30 points. Going into halftime, the Wildcats were down 36-14. With their spirits down, the Wildcats went into the second half in a kind of good form. They were able to score 6 points in the third quarter. Then finally in the fourth, the Farmers scored 16 more points. The game ended with the score of 20-52, giving the Wildcats their first loss of the season.

By Cordell Doss The Holly High School volleyball team has been playing very well so far. The team has been working hard to try to improve their skills on the court. The Lady Cats faced off against the Cheyenne Wells Tigers on Thursday. The game lasted for 4 sets and the Wildcats won 3 of those sets making the final score 3-1. When asked about the game Victoria said, “The game had a slow start in the beginning, but overall we picked it up and won”. Vicky said that some improvements that the team needs to work on are “Our mental game and how calm we are”. Victoria plays as Libero. Vicky also said that she sees a lot of success in their future. When asked about the new coaches Vicky responded, “They are very well experienced about the sport and they know everything about it!” The Wonderful Wildcats were matched up against South Baca on Saturday. The game ended up lasting 5 sets! The game had everyone hanging on the edge of their seats on the final set. The final set ending in a close 15-12. The final score was 3-2 in favor of the Holly Wildcats! When interviewed Marina said, “We could have beat them in three sets”. Marina plays as Middle Hitter. Marina said some improvements that she would like to see are “watching the tips because that’s what always gets us and to be smart with the ball”. When asked about the future of the team she said that the only thing she sees in the future is winning state! Marina also said this about the new coaches, “They are very helpful in our positions and they know our positions pretty well. They also know how we feel when we are on the court.” Marina said that she also loves to yell because it gets the team pumped up. The Wildcats really impressed us this time. These girls are truly inspiring for their tenacity. They always play with their “A” game. Everyone is very excited for the future of this team. Page 5

First thing you need to know about anything, would be getting your life figured out. Once you know, or at least have an idea of what you want to be in life; you can figure out how to build your character. Character is an important thing to have, whether you’re charismatic, chirpy, awkward, angry, philosophic, etc. You need to figure out your character so you can live your life accordingly. Secondly, you need to figure out characters that are similar or alike to yours in one way or another. These will ultimately become your “clique” or “squad” or however you want to word it. Don’t worry if you struggle finding people like you, it just means you’re unique or a freak of nature. Maybe both! In any case, you’re still a savage, and that’s all that matters. On to my third point, classes. You got to make sure to be doing at least mediocre with your schoolwork. Say you want to be successful in life, like some fancy business guy with a suit. People like this don’t slack off when things get difficult so neither should you. However, if you’re willing to settle with a mediocre lifestyle then avoiding work would mean avoiding stress. Which stress relief, at the end of the day is what my entire purpose to you is. On to my fourth point, appearance. In my opinion it is very important to respect yourself more than anybody else would respect you. That means hygiene, working out, being nutritional, avoiding filling your body with nasty things such as alcohol, or drugs. If you take care of yourself you emit this aura that depends respect. Which means less people pick on you if you’re a loser. Last but not least, having fun. Life is loaded with loads and loads of things. Meaning you’ll be happy, sad, angry, etc. Which is okay because that’s what makes people, people. What’s not okay is worrying about little things. At the end of the day your happiness should be at the top of your priority list.

So go out and live, take a little less time worrying about other people, school work, your future, all that ridiculous stuff. And go out and live today to the fullest because you only get today once. Might as well make the most of it right?

By Taylor Neugebauer In music news, the celebrity gossip is always changing. Usually it is something negative about someone just to get the press more viewers. However we’re bringing you some positive news about some of your favorite singers! Katy Perry recently helped deliver her sisters’ second child. She also helped deliver the first one, so maybe she was destined to be an OBGYN instead of a singer. Miley Cyrus is always in the press these days, it seems like. After her phase of being a rebel and doing what she wants, it seems as if she is starting to calm down and live normally again. She is back with her boo thing, Liam Hemsworth, and is happy. However, when asked about walking the red carpet, she respectfully declined. “Why, when people are starving, am I on a carpet that’s red? Because I’m ‘important?’ Because I’m ‘famous?’ that’s not how I roll. It’s like a skit – it’s like Zoolander.” Although we won’t be seeing Cyrus on the red carpet any time soon, we can catch her being a judge on The Voice. She seems to be enjoying her new hobby, as she enjoys helping people grow and find themselves. Page 6

Speaking of The Voice, Blake Shelton and Gwen Stefani were also in the news recently. When asked if she was going to marry Blake, Stefani started giggling and claimed to be “tongue tied” about that subject. Shelton (40) said that Stefani (46) saved his life. He said that no one could understand him any better than someone who does similar things as him. After his divorce with Miranda Lambert, Blake seems to have found the love of his life, again. Ariana Grande recently made her relationship with Mac Miller official on Instagram. After having a duet together in 2013, they are finally a “thing!” The Instagram post was of her and Mac cuddling on the floor. Congrats Ari and Mac! Instead of the normal, negative celebrity news, we decided to get some positivity going around. Tune in next time for some more celebrity news.

By Robert Gutierrez The NFL season kicked off this last week with a large variety of season openers. One of the most anticipated games was played in Denver last week, featuring the Carolina Panther as a Super Bowl rematch. The game started off ugly for Denver and their “all-star” defense as Carolina scored on their first drive. When the score was 17-7 in the Panther’s favor, Denver had to do something to come back to win at home, and they were successful. With the game on the line, after Denver’s comeback, Carolina found themselves in position to win the game. On the 40, with 8 seconds left on the clock, all Carolina had to do was make the field goal to give them the 2 point lead. Some more news is surfacing from the NFL and it’s more than just about football. 49ers Quarterback, Colin Kaepernick “took a stand,” by kneeling during the National Anthem in the opening week. "To me, you are telling me that my position as a backup QB and being quiet is more important than people’s lives. I would ask him to really have a conversation with the families of people that have been murdered and see if he still feels that way. Because I bet that he doesn’t, just because he hasn’t experienced that type of oppression,”said Kaepernick (http:// www.usatoday.com/sports/). Colin isn’t the only player in the league kneeling either. Some of his fellow teammates are starting to support Colin, as they began to kneel with him. Jeremy Lane from Seattle also took a knee along with Denver’s Brandon Marshall in week one as well. Marshall suffered a severe punishment for his actions as the Broncos revoked his endorsement deal. A whole “pod” of players from the Miami Dolphins knelt down on Sunday (9/11) during the anthem. Since it was September 11th, they received a lot more criticism than usual.

By Paulina Rodriguez It’s one of the busiest times for the Holly community because of fair. This year Holly is expecting a different outcome on fair. There will be horse races, a rodeo, and a lot of animal shows. There will be excellent service due to the fact that the seniors are in charge of serving and selling goods. There will be a parade on Saturday, September 24, 2016 at 10:00 A.M. Will the seniors take the blue ribbon for the third time in their career or will it go to another class? Many students are involved in showing animals during fair time. Secretary of the fair board, Tara Neugebauer, says she is most excited about seeing how all the kids do. She also mentioned that she is very pleased that they were able to bring the horse races back this year. They also included a rodeo. Taylor Neugebauer,a senior, is most excited for fair to be over. She thinks fair time is too stressful for her. She shows a steer and is expecting to do pretty good this year. Taylor has put in extra time and effort in her steer. Ashlyn Crossland, also a senior, is most excited about taking pictures at the old gym. She shows her rabbits and bakes goods such as cookies, cakes, and pies. She expects to win everything. Cordell, a new Holly sophomore student, says he is very excited to be around for fair. He is looking forward to being around his peers during float building. Cordell will be going to the pig show to admire the swine. Holly will be full of people from different towns. All businesses will be expecting to be busy all day. September has such a busy and hectic schedule for the Holly people. We will have to see the outcome of how the Holly fair comes out.

By Trace Salzbrenner If you are like me you can’t wait until you can get your hands on a new piece of music that you enjoy. For me, I check for new album releases almost daily and decide for myself the next big radio hits. So, here compiled for you, I have some of my favorite recent songs that I believe are hits you need to hear. Country Music There have been some major releases in the past few months in the area of country music. With Miranda Lambert's broken heart ballad “Vice” making a surprise wave on music charts and new music artists getting more airplay than ever, a plethora of good music is there for the taking. With that being said, new country music is still being released and I have some predictions on the next music hits. Carrie Underwood has just released her new single “Dirty Laundry” and it is a catchy anthem for all the girls who have experienced a cheating man. I personally have never been in this situation (obviously) but I can see the appeal of this song. Eric Church has been having a record year (please get this joke) with his album Mr. Misunderstood. His new single from the album “Kill a Word” featuring the Grammy Award winning Rhiannon Giddens whose amazing voice makes the track much better than Church’s previous release from the album Record Year. David Nail teamed up with new and emerging duo Brothers Osborne to create the new hit “Good at Tonight”. My favorite out of the three country songs I’ve listed, “Good at Tonight” is littered with great vocals and lyrics as well as a break down section at the end of the chorus that completes the track. Christian At the start of August, a surprise entry “H A R D L O V E” by Christian rock band NEEDTOBREATHE peaked at number two on the billboard 200 album chart. The album is a mixture of alternative rock and folk Christian that brings a unique sound to the stage. My personal favorites “HARD LOVE”, the title track for the album, and “HAPPINESS” are both tracks that instantly make you want to tap your foot. This album is fantastic all around.

Hip Hop The XXL magazine has released their 2016 list of freshman rappers earlier in the year and it is an all-around good freshman class. Notable names to look out for are Lil Yachty, Lil Dicky, and Denzel Curry. Lil Yachty is already stepping into the light with his involvement in the less than serious hit “Broccoli” with D.R.A.M. The song has a catchy piano riff that is hard not to enjoy. I honestly hated this song on release, but it is now one of my favorites because of its care free undertones. Lil Dicky was able to enter in the Billboard Hot 100 with his collaboration with Snoop Dogg “Professional Rapper”. If you are looking for comedy music or intense music, Lil Dicky has it. I am planning to see a lot more from this rapper next year. Denzel Curry has a voice that I can’t help but like. He has yet to actually release a song on his own that I can fully enjoy but his freshman cypher was one of the best in the whole freshman class (all cyphers can be found at freshman.xxlmag.com with parents’ permission). Also, his involvement in some songs, like the “Chill Bill” remix, make it worth listening to.

By Kleat Bensen If you have ever wanted buy a terrifying robot that was used for space travel by NASA, then you may just have your chance, if you have about 80,000 dollars to spend. NASA has recently put on auction one of the two robots they used in the mid-1960s, before the Apollo missions to test the safety of their space crafts and suits. The hydraulic controlled oddity runs off of an oil based system. The robot weighs 230 pounds and can be adjusted from 5’5” to 6’2” feet tall, proportions equal to the average American adult male at the time. The robot is covered in 1/32 inch thick aluminum skin which can be taken off to allow more free movement and easy access to the robots wiring. The bot’s creepy face and head are made primarily from fiberglass, which can also be removed to allow easy access to internal wiring. This item is quite rare and unique considering that only two were ever made. The other is in the Smithsonian. This one was never deployed as originally intended, however it still is an engineering marvel as it can swivel its hips, raise and lower its arms, clench its fists, and even shake hands.
