By Robert Gutierrez This years’ Thanksgiving seems to be a good one, according to the Holly student body. Great food, time with family and traditions is what sums up everyone’s turkey day so far. Most of the kids stayed here, but some of them left to spend time with other family that they’ve rarely seen. Luis says that his Thanksgiving was actually pretty fun compared to previous years. “I ate A LOT and spent time with my family. We also went to pueblo for some black Friday shopping, which was actually kind of scary. There were a lot of people that fought for things like the world was coming to an end. These people had no respect and I was in the middle of it, but all-in-all it was a pretty good Thanksgiving,” Luis states. Taylor says that she also had a great Thanksgiving. “I loved spending time with my family and the food was amazing! The taters were the best by far!” Leo actually left the state for his Turkey day making the journey to Bryan, Texas, to spend the weekend with his southern family. “I ate plenty of turkey and plenty of other foods that were just straight up delicious. I don’t think that I could pick a favorite meal, but if I had to… I would probably have to say the turkey. I can’t wait for next year’s thanksgiving!” says Leo. Mr. Boydstun had an “amazing” T-day this year, as he also spent time with his family, and helped his parents with Christmas decorations and some other labor. “It was a fun brake for me. The food was amazing and I loved spending the holidays with my family. The food was all good, I couldn’t pick a favorite,” Boydstun says. Yaniel says his Thursday was pretty fun as well. “Spending time with family, playing Loteria, and eating all day… how much better can it get? Favorite food by far has to be the ham! I don’t know what about it exactly but it’s just always been one of my favorites.”

The football boys ended their season on a positive note, so many people are excited to see how they will perform this year for basketball. The boys participating for the year 20162017 are Sigifredo Avalos, Marshall Pierce, Tack Neugebauer, Ricardo Juarez, Chandler Rushton, and Yaniel Vidal, Robert Gutierrez, Brandon Wilson, Payne Donaldson, Jodus Barth, and Nicholas Crum, Kobe Davis, Jaret Rushton, Michael Rushton, Juan Moreno, Erick Chaparro, and Oscar Abraham Rosales, Alex Ramos, Andy Ramos, and
Diego Tamayo. When asked what his team goals were, he replied “Winning state is always the ultimate goal, but we will take it step by step. I hope to defend our 3 time HBT championship as well as our 3 time district championship. I hope for the boys to perform better at the Border War than we did last year.” When asked on the things the boys needed to improve on, Coach Heck said that they need to be quicker on the defense to offense transition and push the court faster. Boxing out is going to be vital to win some rebounds because the team is very shirt this year. He believes
that they can always improve on defense. He also saw a lot of positivity on the team. The guys are excited, enthused, hard workers, and they happen to have a lot of experience only losing two varsity players from last year. Mr. Heck notices that the guys push each other to the max to get better every single day. The team also has lots of great, inspiring leaders for the younger ones. The boys will go far this year once again; they hope to see you all there packing the stands cheering them on their road to State. Mr. Heck excitedly said about his team “I HAVE HIGH HOPES!
By Sigi Avalos The Lady Wildcats Basketball is finally here after such a long wait. A new exciting year awaits. There are key players returning from last year’s team including Marie Gomez, Taylor Neugebauer, Sydnee Howland, Kallie Cathcart, and Josie Cook. A lot of new changes are coming their way after head coach Randy Holmen will not be here since he became Genoa-Hugo’s new principal. Randy Holmen has been with the girls’ basketball program for the past five years. He had success helping to lead the girls to the regional tournament the 2014-2015 season. A new head coach has been appointed, Grady Cook will be guiding the Lady wildcats this year with Kylee Hammes as the assistant coach. There is only time for improvements before the season starts and the Lady
Wildcats are determined to make it a great one. Last season was a struggle with their record being 7-13 but they look to the new guidance of head coach Cook to help build on from last year. The roster is looking small with only about fourteen girls coming out this year and having only three seniors meaning that many new under classmen will have to step it up. This year’s basketball roster includes the freshmen which are Saedee Davis, Leslie Mendoza, Athena Crum, Destiny Ramos, Jasmine Pizarro, and Daisy Hernandez. Sophomores are Kallie Cathcart, Sydnee Howland, Jordan Kalma, and Trinity Scott. Juniors are Josie Cook, and Itzy Juarez. Seniors are Taylor Neugebauer, Rachel Kodavatikanti, and Marie Gomez.
The Lady Wildcats will have their first game on Friday, December 2nd against the newly combined teams of Flagler and Hi-Plains taking place in Seibert. The Wildcats hope to start the season off with a big win not only to boost their confidence but to continue to have success throughout the rest of the season.
By Alexandria Gutierrez Wrestling is probably one of the toughest sports to be a part of. Wrestling in the United States started in the 1920’s. To be a good wrestler, you need to do hard work and determination. The wrestlers have to go on diets and weigh a certain amount to be in the certain weight class they want to wrestle in. The wrestlers spend not just their practice time, but also time out of practice to lose or gain weight and muscle and keep them in shape. If the wrestlers do not do what they are supposed to do during the season, then they might not be as good as they want to be. For example, instead of drinking water they drink a pop. I interviewed Brendyn Nordyke about how he feels about this sport and his
past experiences. Brendyn has previously been to state, and the feeling was just phenomenal! The first question that I had asked Brendyn about wrestling was how he feels about the sport. His response was “I feel so passionate about this sport, I love it and I am so determined to do what is best for this upcoming season.” He says he feels really good about it because his freshman year he went to state and he felt the “wrestling air” in front of all of those people in the stadium. Another question I asked Brendyn about the season was how he feels he has improved, and he said that he feels confident. He believes that he can go far if he continues to work hard and never stops. One person he thinks who
has stepped up to become a leader is Alex Venegas. He is an upperclassman, and he tries to push people past their limits, so they can be the best they can be. As the season continues, I would just like to wish all of the wrestlers a good luck with their journey!
By Taylor Neugebauer A new addition to Holly High School’s athletics is Lakin’s Club Volleyball Team. We had 6 girls tryout and they all did really well. Vicky, Marina, Alex, Jazmine, Saedee, and Jaci all went and showed Kansas girls how to play volleyball. By playing all year round, our volleyball team should see the state tournament again next year. This is a great opportunity for some of the players because it gives them a chance to work on their position and to keep their hands on a volleyball throughout offseason. It also creates lifelong friendships with new coaches and teammates.
Vicky said that tryouts went well and it was good to be with new people with different abilities. She appreciated the coaches, too, because they have different approaches on different perspectives of the game. She says it is really helpful to have so many people who want to make her better. “We should do well and it will be fun because we get to travel and get better for the season at Holly. Club is not going to affect how I play for my school, it is only going to make me better,” Vicky assures us. Alex told us that she loved the experience because she got to play with new
people outside of our team and she got to see how different each player is. She expects the club season to go well and says that when Holly High School girls start next fall, it will be a huge improvement and they will have a lot more experience. Club volleyball should have a huge impact on our volleyball team. Even though not everyone tried out, those that did can bring what they learned to practice and can help out the freshmen coming up and the players that didn’t have the chance to tryout this winter. Good luck girls, we can’t wait to see how you do!
Why do friends eventually leave you for someone else? Sometimes when people start to develop different interests they seem to fall away from you and gain new friends who follow their new hobbies. This is exceptionally true in middle school and high school because people are still trying to figure themselves out so a change in interests can happen rapidly. Eventually though, when you finally know what your interests actually are you will be able to find a friend that will stick with you. Just have hope. Can you bring Hot Cheetos to the 7th graders on Wednesday 23rd, 2016? I feel like I have already missed the deadline. Thank you for the drawing of hot Cheetos though. What are better excuses for eating junk food and not exercising? This one hits close to home because who doesn’t love a nice big bag of chips while sitting at home doing nothing? However you do not want comradery, you want excuses! Cold weather could be here at any moment so to protect yourself from the harsh environment, you may want to eat some foods that are high in calories to warm you up. Also, some junk foods can be a reliable source of key proteins! What characters are in Lab Rats Elite Force and what are their powers? I am not really an alternative to google but I can tell you that if I were to watch the show, I would hope that there is at least one person to have a completely useless power like the power to always comb your hair the right way. Alternatively, I would like to see a character named Gerald who can peal an orange without any of those stringy things sticking to the good part. How do you ask out a girl that lives in a different town? Firstly you will need to buy a dozen roses, no more or no less. Secondly, you will need to choose a date that can be easily remembered so you don’t forget the anniversary such as a Holiday. Now that you have both of those things, you will need to purchase a case of white doves, a thoroughbred horse, and twenty seven cases of chocolate. Take all of those things plus the girl to your rich uncle’s villa on the beach and at sunset ask her to be yours. Also, you could just call her but what is the fun in that? What is love? Baby, don’t hurt me.

formed me that the play is about a guy who gets bribed to be someon’se boyfriend and then that causes problems. The main characters will be Junior, Brandon Wilson and senior Rachel Kodovatikanti. Brandon says it’ll be great. “We put a lot of time into it, and a lot of dedication. I just hope the
freshmen are able to learn their lines on time.” Ms.Kalma doesn’t know if it will be better than last year’s play because they are both different styles. The play will be Monday, December 5 at 7:00 p.m.
By Paulina Rodriguez Thanksgiving is one of the best holidays ever. Yes, you are giving thanks for what you have, but you are also eating like there is no tomorrow. Food is delicious! Who does not like food right? With Thanksgiving around the corner, pies, turkey, stuffing, mashed potatoes, corn, ham, and all kinds of different other foods are all we are thinking about. My mouth is getting watery as I speak of these foods. After I am finishing stuffing my face, I leave a little space for dessert. Pumpkin pie with whipped cream on top is my favorite! Other people like lemon pie, pecan pie, apple pie, cherry pie, and many other kinds of pie. This year my mom is making a pumpkin cheesecake pie. I cannot wait to get my taste buds
on that. Christmas is also around the corner and all I can think about is food. In my household we have a lot of Mexican Food. Tamales, menudo, frijoles charros, posole, and asado are some of the main dishes that my family makes. If you have not ate any of these dishes, you are definitely missing out! Just come to my house and my mother will make sure you won’t leave with an empty stomach. My favorite thing to eat is tamales. I love the green chile tamales with cheese. The most made tamale is the red chile. Mrs. Frey told me that she eats the same meal as Thanksgiving. With all the holidays coming up, it is impossible to stay healthy. Thank goodness
that winter means big jackets so nobody notices the weight you have gained. But who cares, the food is worth it. It is getting a little chilly outside so hot chocolate, Netflix, and fuzzy socks are all people are waiting to do during break. Be thankful and happy holidays!
By Jordan Lozano Last weekend, four students in the high school choir went to CSU Pueblo for an honor choir. Freshman Miguel Morales, Junior Josie Cook, and senior Trace Salzbrenner and myself Jordan Lozano. The Pueblo honor choir is a two day choir event in which we learn 6 songs, though 7 were planned, that we had little time before to look at. Going up there we were not really confident in how we would sing them. We only had two weeks to study the music before having to go up to Pueblo. We left Friday morning at 5 so we had enough time to make it to practice. There were about 140 students that cane for the choir, which is
the most students they have ever had for that event. Each day we practiced about a total of 4 hours in multiple sessions. Beginning in the morning, we went over every song a few times each and spent a lot of time on certain parts to make sure that we were getting everything perfected. Though it sounds easy it really isn’t. Diction is a big thing when singing. Diction is the way we enunciate words. Some words need some consonants stressed out more than others and some vowels need to be held out longer that others as well. The unique thing about this honor choir is that there is also an orchestra that goes on during the
same time. The orchestra practices their songs plus a few songs that they play in tandem with our singing. After spending two days practicing, we had a small concert as well. We sang four songs on our own and an additional two songs with an orchestra. That night the entire auditorium was filled and there were still people sitting along the side and out in the halls. The choir was a great experience that really hits you in the feels.

She weighed 7 pounds and 5 ounces. Kris Jenner had told reporters that Rob looked excited for his baby girl. Who is also excited for the new baby is big brother four-year-old King Cairo, who is son of Blac Chyna and her exboyfriend Tyga. The whole family is happy for the new Kardashian baby. Now, Blac Chyna is working on her new body. During her pregnancy she claimed to be back in shape in no time. On her snapchat she has put videos of her post baby
body to prove her results. I think she looks amazing. In other news, you might have heard of the kiss shared between Jennifer Lopez and her ex-husband Marc Anthony. It all went down on Thursday November 17 at the Latin Grammy Awards. Jennifer gave Marc Anthony the Person of the Year Award and said in Spanish “Marc, you are a living legend who has laid bare your heart and soul on you musical journey” and she also continued to compliment him by saying “We’ve learned so much and we’ve grown so much, and you’ve always been so many things in my life, my mentor, a twin soul, a father
who’s not only the person of the year, he’s the person of all time.” After these wonderful nice words Jennifer had said the audience convinced them to kiss. In my opinion the kiss was so awkward. Before the kiss the two actually performed together. There is no chance the two are getting back together. After the kiss Marc said he was also amazing and kind of friend zone her calling her more of a sister. Her reaction was pretty funny. A source says that there is nothing going on with the two.
By Kleat Benson Recently in the country of Libya, a massive conflict has broken out between 2 clans after a schoolgirl was attacked and injured by a pet monkey belonging to the second family. In the South Libyan town of Sadha conflict and tension have emerged between the Awlad Suleiman and Guedadfa clans after the schoolgirl was injured by the pet monkey. Since this attack, three men and the animal in question have been killed in the initial clashes that have erupted since the emergence of the new conflict since the attack. The animal had pulled off the girl's headscarves which then prompted members of the Awlad Suleiman clan
to attack the three men that had released the animal upon the girl. A resident of the town has been quoted as saying, “There was an escalation on the second and third days with the use of tanks, mortars, and other heavy weapons. There is still sporadic clashes and life is completely shut down in the areas where there has been fighting.” The use of such high-grade military weapons is not surprising as the Sadha region is a hub of arms smuggling in Libya, and the use of these weapons is even less surprising as the Gaddadfa and the Awlad Suleiman clans represent the most powerfully armed factions in the Sadha region.
In the latest instances of fighting, which have taken place in the center of the town, clan leaders have attempted to hold a ceasefire in order for both clans to retrieve bodies for proper burials has failed. Since Sunday the Sadha Medical Center has received the bodies of 16 people killed in the fights as well as 50 injured patients as reported by a spokesman for the Medical Center. The spokesman then went on to say, “There are women and Children among the wounded and some foreigners from sub-Saharan African countries among those killed due to indiscriminate shelling.”
By Josue Pena Doctor Strange is the newest addition to the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Ever since its announcement, fans everywhere have been eagerly anticipating its arrival. The director is Scott Derrickson who’s not a stranger to big budget movies having directed movies like Sinister, and The Day the Earth Stood Still. I absolutely loved this movie. Marvel has yet again introduced a very strange and obscure comic book character into the MCU and made it work. (Ant-Man, Guardians of the Galaxy) Aside from the Marvel logo at the beginning, this movie feels very different from the other MCU films. The color grading is filled with bright colors like the splash page on a comic book. This might be one of the best ensemble casts I’ve ever seen. It astonishes me how much talent they were able to get. Benedict Cumberbatch gives a lot to this role. It’s a huge understatement to say he plays Stephen Strange well. His performance is one of the strongest selling points of the film. He showed the perfect level of arrogance, cockiness, and wit. After having seen the film, I can’t imagine anyone else playing Doctor Strange. Like Robert Downy Junior with Tony Stark, Benedict Cumberbatch basically cements himself as this character. Once he becomes Doctor Strange, it really is the comic book character come to life. There’s something mesmerizing and kind of magnetic that draws your eye to him. The Cape also deserves a big shout out for being awesome. I loved the cape. Another person I thought was a huge
standout was Tilda Swinton. She plays The Ancient One. While there was a huge amount of controversy surrounding the casting, I loved her. I thought she delivered a huge and impactful presence in the film that The Ancient One definitely needed. Rachael McAdams also did a great job. They used her sparingly and right. I thought she was a really nice touch to the film, and served as a viable tether to Doctor Strange’s humanity. Chitewel Ejiofor did an excellent job as well, and I can’t wait to see where his character goes. Now for the villain. Marvel has been credited with having unmemorable villains in their movies with a few exceptions. Mads Mikkelsen was actually really good. He clearly needed to be present to move the plot forward, but I would’ve liked to of seen the film explore him more to really make him stand out against all the other Marvel villains. The writers deserve some major props for the difficult tasks they faced. The plot was really good. It’s an excellent story. Stephen Strange’s character arc is one of the best I’ve seen. It’s really great to see Stephen Strange shed away his arrogance and try to humble himself. His evolution is both convincing and enjoyable to see. There was a lot more humor than what I was expecting, but I thought it only added more to the scenes. There was only one time, where I thought the humor interrupted a really great action scene. I thought the explanation of magic was interesting and is something that I don’t think audience
members will have a problem with. What really blew me away was the visuals. The 3D definitely added something more to the city bending scenes, which made my jaw drop. They were class a visual effects and some of the best I’ve ever seen. The action sequences were outstanding. The fact that they can maintain geographical and visual continuity, while they’re doing all these crazy fights was a really huge achievement and should be applauded. The giant set pieces that you see in the trailer are just the tip of the iceberg. There are a whole bunch more trippy and psychedelic-like effects. The way they incorporated magic into the fights is also one of the many unique and impressive aspects of the film. There were, however, a couple of minor problems I had with the movie. The exposition is pretty heavy in the first act of the movie, and though I don’t think it will take away from the experience, it may be a lot for audiences to take in. It would have also been nice to see more of a focus on other side characters to really flesh them out and to understand more in depth why they make the choices they later make. Overall I was pretty happy with this film. Doctor Strange is, for me at least, one of the best single-hero movies ever. It’s a nice addition to the MCU, and it’s a really good origin story to the most mystical, and powerful character in the entire Marvel universe.
By Diana Olague A Minnesota police officer fatally shot Philando Castile during a traffic stop in July. The officer was charged with second-degree manslaughter and two felony counts of dangerous discharge of a firearm. St. Anthony police Officer Jeronimo Yanez will make his first court appearance Friday, November 18. The shooting’s aftermath was broadcast on Facebook Live by Diamond Reynolds, Castile’s girlfriend. The video quickly spread across social media and cable news, was one of the most high-profile fatal police shootings during the protests that have occurred across the country in recent years. Yanez, who said he feared for his life at
the time of the shooting, could face up to 20 years in prison and up to $40,000 in fines, according to the 10-page criminal complaint filed in Ramsey County District Court. Yanez had pulled over Castile, 32, after seeing him driving on the night of July 6 and saying that he looked like a suspect in a convenience store robbery days earlier, but Castile was not a suspect in the robbery. Yanez pulled Castile around 9 p.m., and less than a minute later, began firing the first of seven fatal shots into the car. One bullet hit the armrest between Castile and Reynolds, while another went through the driver’s seat and hit the backseat behind Castile. Reynolds’s 4-
year-old daughter was in a car seat on the passenger side of the backseat. Ramsey County attorney, John Choi, said that he chose the second-degree manslaughter charge because he thinks it is “the highest, most provable offense.” During a state investigation, Yanez told officials that he thought he and others in the area faced mortal danger. Yanez said he believed Castile was putting his hand around something during the encounter. Castile’s death came during a fraught moment nationwide, one that saw a spate of shootings by and of police. He was shot and this shooting set off a series of protests nationwide.
By Leo Martinez Magic the Gathering is taking the world by storm. A card game for nerds that just released Kaladesh its newest installment of cards. This is a trading card game. With around 20 million players as of 2016. It was started in 1993 by Richard Garfield and has evolved into a recreational activity for nerds everywhere to do on Fridays. Basically you have two players and their health starts out at twenty each. You use a mixture of creature’s spells and artifacts for both defense and offense to try to trump your opponent. Easier said than done. You’re supposed to go out and buy a pack of cards and each package is a surprise you don’t know what
you’re going to get. This adds a rich element of surprise to the game. Being able to create your own deck to make it all flow together and use combos to beat your opponent is a really fun and cool thing in my opinion. If you want to play then you need to buy at least sixty cards to make a deck. Base it around a color or multiple colors. There are five colors to choose from: black, red, green, blue, and white. Then you find other players to go up against. When you’ve polished your skills you can enter in big league tournaments. In order to win big money from stores. Cash pots and rare mythical cards are all including in winning said tournaments.
Of course there are so many rules to magic that you must learn. It takes a significant amount of time to really get the entire feel of the game. And be able to come up with a unique deck that has a good flow and works with itself really good. This is a game of wits that require not just the average Joe.
