The National FFA Convention is the largest gathering of FFA Students in the world and on October 18, eleven FFA students from the Holly Chapter departed from the school to head up to Denver for their early flight to Indianapolis, Indiana where the 89th Annual National FFA Convention and Expo was being held. The eleven students who were able to go were Daisy Hernandez, Destiny Ramos, Angelica Rodriguez, Jazmine Pizarro, Miguel Morales, Basti Peña, Aileen Scott, Andrea Orta, Alex Venegas, Juanita Rodriguez, and myself Trace Salzbrenner. “It was fun walking around and seeing everything,” commented Destiny Ramos on the FFA Expo, which is the largest career fair in the United States. Three hundred twenty-three different booths were set up in the convention center for students to look at. Many were booths teaching students about different jobs and colleges from all over the USA. “I’m excited for the next one!” exclaimed Miguel. The National FFA Convention is an experience that students will never forget and leaves many students excited about the rest of their FFA careers. “I can’t wait to go to the next event because every time I go to one it is always really fun,” commented Basti Peña. Students were able to also see some of the top speakers in the nation such as Diana Nyad, the woman who was able to swim from Cuba to Florida. “Her story was so inspirational! Afterwords, I wanted to swim myself,” joked Angelica Rodriguez when asked who her favorite speaker was. Rodriguez later told me that Diana Nyad’s speech was definitely one she wouldn’t forget. Another keynote speaker that the Holly FFA students were able to hear was Jason Brown, the former NFL player turned farmer. Speeches like these are the kind that get you excited to take action and make a change in yourself and your community. With places to visit like the Circle Centre Mall, the FFA mall, the National FFA Expo, and the other great places, every student was able to see something new. For example the students were able to eat at Primanti Brothers. One student even claimed it was a memory she would never forget.

They played against the McClave Cardinals, and battled hard to try to beat the Cardinals for the first time in their high school career, but sadly couldn’t get the job done. They battled hard keeping the games tight splitting the first two 1-1. The Lady Cats were slain (3-1) after a 4game duel, and now just look forward to a promising chance at state.

The girls played in Lamar last Saturday, and had a rough road to Regionals. They lost to both Springfield (who finished district champs) and Wiley in 3. On the bright side, they beat Walsh in 3, advancing them to the Regional Tournament. They now have to beat Springfield and Cheyenne Wells if they want to make it to state. They’ve beat both of these teams before, and they seem really confident that they’ll do it! They have a tough road in front of them, but they don’t have anything holding them back. Good luck girls!!

By Taylor Neugebauer The fall portion of Lamar Sports has sadly come to an end. Sydnee Howland and the softball team qualified for state; however, when they got there they only won one game. Sigi Avalos and Luis Mendoza disappointingly got cut short and ended up not qualifying for state this year. Luis felt sad because one of the teams that qualified was 4-11 while the Savages were 11-4. That is clearly a ridiculous difference in game wins, and the Savages should’ve had a clear path to the state tournament. He said that it angers him that they were unable to participate in the state tournament this year; however, Luis has high hopes for next season, even though he will miss playing
alongside Sigi. “I’m very disappointed and heartbroken about not making it to state because it is my last year and the sport that I love and we didn’t get to go,” states Sigi. “We deserved it more because our record was way better. Our season was pretty successful because we had a winning record, however we didn’t make it to state so that saddens me,” Sigi added. Sydnee and the Lady Savages qualified for state this year. They won their first game against Basalt, however were defeated 15-4 against Brush. Sydnee says that their team wasn’t playing together and they had some disputes over starting positions that game. She says
that starting positions aren’t guaranteed, so no matter who’s playing, everyone should play together. “Overall, our season went well because we were 9-2 in league,” says Sydnee. Next season should be a good one for the Savages. They are losing some seniors; however, there are a good group of girls moving up. One of the coaches quit so Sydnee says that the team might not be as strong, but they have the talent. Everyone at HHS has enjoyed watching our Holly Wildcats play for LHS this year and are proud of all of their accomplishments. By Jesus Perez The junior class put on a haunted house in the old Shanner building. They worked many hours to get the haunted house to look scary. I asked Alex Gutierrez about her thoughts on it and she said, “It was a lot of work to build it, but once we finished it, it was a lot of fun to get in and scare the people walking through. Except for the fact when Kalma punched me in the jaw and Taylor ripped off my wig.” The juniors had been working on the haunted house for a couple of weeks now. Many of them have expressed that they are pleased with how it turned out. I asked Sigi Avalos on his opinion on the haunted house, he said, “It was better
than what I thought it would be. The one part that really got me was the when the girl crawled out of the box. I was really disappointed that I did not get to go through all of the rooms.” The junior class had a few issues with the haunted house, but that is to be expected since it is a new project. Mr. Boydstun, the sponsor for the junior class, said, “It went very well. At first it was a challenge to start this new project. We had a few unforeseen problems on the first night, but we dealt with them very well. The second weekend ran better since we knew what to do.”
The second weekend they did the haunted house ran a lot smoother according to many students. The lines moved quicker and any problems that they came upon were dealt with very well. The haunted house had a good turnout both nights. On the first night they had 220 people walk through and the second they had 195. The junior class plans on doing the haunted house next year during Halloween, and they expect it to run way better.

The tour bus crashed on Sunday near Palm Springs, California, killing thirteen people and injuring thirty-one. They were carrying forty-four passengers total. The bus driver had died during the accident and the truck driver had received minor injuries. Abele said, “The speed of the bus was so significant that when it hit the back of the big rig… the trailer itself entered about fifteen feet into the bus. You can see it was a substantial impact.” This accident happened at 5:17 a.m. local time on westbound Interstate 10. It is not known if there were drugs or alcohol involved. The reason I like those colors are because they match every conceivable outfit. My advice to you is not to get wide calf boots.
