By Taylor Neugebauer As the 2016 football season came to an end last Saturday, the boys played their hearts out and left it all on the field. They had a great season and accomplished a lot. One of their greatest accomplishments was making it to playoffs. Their last game against Akron was a dog fight. They had a great first half of the game and came out with fire at half time. The second half was a little harder for the boys even though they never gave up. They finished the season with a good game, just falling short of Akron, 35-14. Chuy commented, “Most of the boys played well but the reason we lost was our mistakes. Our defense however was really strong and kept them from the end zone most of the time. Our offense was where most of our mistakes came from. Overall the season was great, and I enjoyed playing with everyone. It feels good to get further than we have in a long time and I have high hopes for next season’s team, as well.” Coach Eaton had a lot to say about Saturday’s game. “Overall, we were playing the number one ranked team in the RPI. Our game didn’t start out well because they had a 14-0 lead on us. In the second quarter, however, I could see the team come together before my eyes. The boys scored a touchdown, stopped the ball on defense, and moved the ball on offense. At halftime, we were only down by one touchdown, and we thought we could feel an upset coming. In the third quarter our defense played great, but our offense couldn’t get to the end zone even though we got to the 20 yard line three times. I’m proud of the boys because they battled to the end and gave a good effort. As a team we felt like we needed to have less turnovers and we knew we were good enough to play with the highest level of teams. I thought the seniors played well and they had a very successful season.” Eaton also said, “The boys who finished out the season enjoyed it, and we have a lot of talent coming back next year. I feel that we will make it to state next year. I would like to thank Coach “Johnny Football” Seufer, and volunteer coaches, Angel Pecina and Corey Doss.” Video highlights of the season are available on YouTube under “Dayne Eaton Football Highlights.” Congrats to the boys on a great season. They made our small town very proud and we all enjoyed watching them. They set the bar high for next season and we can’t wait to see what they have in store. Go Wildcats!

By Jesus Perez Our volleyball girls went to the state volleyball tournament this weekend and competed with other teams up there. In the pool play they were matched up against Nucla and Kit Carson. In their first round on Friday they played Kit Carson, which were undefeated at the time. They had a heated match up, but Kit Carson was able to pull out a 3 game to 0 win over Holly. Holly fought hard in all three games, but they were not able to pull off the victory. In their next matchup, they faced off against Nucla, who was 19-1 going into the state tournament. Holly played with a lot of heart during this game but they lost. Nucla beat Holly in the first three games. This loss ended the girls’ volleyball season. The volleyball team ended

their season 16-10. They fought hard throughout the season and proudly represented the Wildcats at every game. The girls made it to state and although they did not win they represented holly very well and had a great volleyball season. Senior Taylor Neugebauer had this to say about her experience at the state tournament, “It was a good experience and we made it much further than anyone expected. It was really fun to play in the Denver Coliseum and it was a good way to end my senior year of volleyball. I very grateful that I had the pleasure that I went through this experience with the team that I had. I really enjoyed the whole experience.”

The girls had an amazing season even though many people doubted that they would be a good team. They played very well and came together as a team when they needed the most. They pushed through a lot of doubt from people to get as far as they did.

By Cordell Doss Paradoxes have always stood as a way of trying to rethink common knowledge. Trying too hard might leave you exhausted. Beware reader, you are in for a headache! The first paradox stems from the use of vague predicates. It is called “The Heap” Paradox. It starts with a heap of sand. Grains of sand are taken out of the pile one at a time. At what point do we name the heap of sand no longer a heap? If we follow the premise that a heap of sand minus one grain is still a heap then we will have write out that premise. If 1,000,000 grains is a heap, then 999,998 grains is also a heap and so on. If we keep following this rule then we will arrive at 1 grain of sand is still a

heap. The next paradox is called “The Ship of Theseus”. A ship that is newly built is its own ship because it contains all of its original parts. After the ship has several repairs and replacements the ship now contains parts that are no longer original to the ship. After several more repairs and replacements the ship no longer contains parts that were a part of the original. Is the ship still the same ship or a different ship entirely? Philosophers have debated this idea for thousands upon thousands of years. Still yet to be solved so it remains a paradox. The final paradox is referred to as the “Bootstrap Paradox”. A time traveler buys a copy of hamlet from a book store

and travels back in time to Elizabethan London. The time traveler then gives the copy to Shakespeare and Shakespeare copies Hamlet and produces it. The time traveler then returns to the present and buys a copy of Hamlet and repeats this process. If the time traveler continues to do this who, in turn, wrote Shakespeare?

By Josue Pena Our High School Knowledge Bowl teams were in attendance at the meet this past Friday, November 4th. The meet started at 9:00 a.m., and then later ended at around 2:30 p.m. There were a lot of schools in attendance, meaning more competition for our teams. There was a total of 31 A and B teams at the meet. There was a written round first, followed by four oral rounds. They also had a one hour lunch break in between so they could refuel their brains. What was interesting about this meet, was that they were using harder questions than usual. They were described as “very difficult,” by Mrs. Frey. The A team from Lamar took 1st , Walsh took 2nd, and Kit Carson took 3rd. In B team, Crowley County took 1st, Lamar took

nd

2 , and Walsh took 3rd. Our A team is comprised of Cordell Doss, William Kennedy, Marley Flint, and Brandon Wilson. Our B team includes Jesus “Chuy” Perez, Michael Rushton, Juana Rodriguez, and Japheth Frey. The C team is Josie Cook, Marie Gomez, Kallie Cathcart, and Grayden Flint. They put in a lot of serious dedication and tons of effort when it comes to Knowledge Bowl. They practice for 30 minutes on the Tuesday mornings of the weeks that they have meets. Meets have been usually on Fridays, and can last up to five hours! The next meet is at Cheraw, which is one and a half hours away. Due to state Volleyball (btw congrats to the Volleyball girls!), not as many teams

will be there, giving Holly an even bigger chance to place. The roster may change depending on who is available. Mrs. Frey said “We have had our ups and downs.” Cordell describes this year as “Rough, definitely rough.” Despite a few losses, Holly has had some major wins this year. On October 14, in Plainview, B team took 1st place and A team took 3rd. B team has also placed several times including in Vilas where they placed 3rd, and again in Holly, where they also took 3rd again. Going into this next meet, we wish the best luck to our teams and hope more victories soon come across their horizon.

By Jordan Lozano In my family, a favorite past time of ours has always been telling scary stories and urban legends. My dad always told me this one every night before bed (yeah he told me scary stories before bed what’s wrong with that?). A woman start to drive home after a long day of work. She lives out in the country where rarely anyone goes. As she’s driving she notices that someone is driving behind her. For a moment she doesn’t think anything of it until he starts to shine his high beams before immediately turning them off. She notices and begins to speed up to get as far away as possible but he speeds

with her. She evens out to a constant speed so she can call for help, but he flashes his high beams and bumps the back of her car. She drops her phone and immediately starts to panic. She speeds home which the car behind does too. Finally reaching her house she springs out of her car and runs for the front door just as the other car come careening into the drive behind her. Just as she puts her key into the door the driver of the other car screams. ‘For God’s sake, lock the car door!’ Without thinking, she does it. Just as the electronic lock clicks, she sees the face of a man materialize at

the window of the back seat, staring intently at her and banging lightly on the window. The man had pulled out behind her when he noticed a figure in the back seat with a knife. Every time he would come up from behind the seat the man would flash his high beams and he would go back to hiding. A few days later the woman had found out that the killer had recently escaped from prison.

We all remember one of our childhood’s Disney channel show, “That’s So Raven”. The show wrapped up in 2007, the cast went on their separate ways and fans have not heard from them since. “That’s So Raven” lead star, Raven-Symone, expanded her brand and became a host in “The View. Raven announced in late October that she will begin to work on a new series. There is no title yet, but she's calling it, “That's So Raven 2”. Raven will reprise her title role of Raven Baxter in the offshoot, which she also will executive produce. On the new show, Raven is a divorced mother with two kids, a son and daughter, one of whom has inherited her ability to catch glimpses of the future. Her oldest child, Nia, is a fellow psychic and a science whiz. She will be the one to gain Raven’s ability to see into the future, and it will cause her life as a normal middle schooler to become com-

Netflix is probably one of the best things ever invented. Netflix was actually founded on August 29, 1997. The founders are Reed Hastings and Marc Randolph. So why is Netflix amazing? It is amazing because you can watch so many different shows or movies for the low price of $8. You can also watch Netflix just about anywhere such as on your TV or mobile device. There are other deals with Netflix. The lowest is the basic streaming of $8 that is only one screen playing, the standard streaming is $10 with two screen playing, and the premium streaming is $12 with four screens. Since Netflix is so

pletely extraordinary. She has a younger brother named Booker with a habit of getting into trouble. That’s so Raven 2 is scheduled to go into production in early 2017.

By Flor Orozco popular, I asked a couple of friends what is their favorite TV shows or movies they have watched or are currently watching. My friend Jordan Lozano’s favorite show is Fuller House. It is a spin off series of the original show Full House. Jordan has binged watched Arrow, Flash, Super Natural, Vampire Diaries, Orange is the New Black, Walking Dead, Stranger Things, Young and Hungry, How to Get Away with Murder, Legends of Tomorrow, Unbreakable, Daredevil, American Horror Story, Reign, Jane the Virgin, Grey’s Anatomy, Gotham, The Originals, Violeta, Charmed, Switched at Birth, and Bates Motel.

Paulina Rodriguez’s favorite show on Netflix is Melissa and Joey. Some shows Paulina has binged watched are Fuller House, Melissa and Joey, The Fosters, Baby Daddy, Young and Hungry, and Friends. The show Melissa and Joey is about a male nanny working for a woman who is part of the government. I personally am new to Netflix. I was introduced by Paulina last week, and now I am in with the show The Fosters. I highly recommend the show. Maybe now, for those of you who don’t have Netflix, should consider getting it because it’s cheap and comes with a great deal.

By Kleat Benson So by now we have all heard the stories about the clowns. We all have heard how they lurk in the shadows waiting to attack the next unsuspecting person to be unfortunate enough to cross their paths. But something that none of us know is where these clowns are coming from and why are they appearing now of all times. No one is quite sure what the answers to these questions are, but like everything else there are theories that have been proposed to try and find the truth. Now to clarify this is not the first time that clown attacks have been reported, it has actually happened before in October 2014 residents of Jacksonville, Florida. Soon after the reports started coming in from Jacksonville the craze spread across the state where the clowns were

reported to have been trespassing and vandalizing private property. Afterwards photos of copycat clowns in California surfaced where these people started to mimic the clowns in Florida. No one is quite sure however why the craze has started again now, 2 years later. The first theory that might shed some light on why the clowns have resurfaced is that it may have something to do with the movie “It”. You think, “wait that movie came out in the nineties, how does that have any affect now?” Well a remake has been announced to come out next year and this clown phenomena is just one big promotion. Studios have been known to do this type of promotion in the past like a year ago with the movie “The Gallows” and the emergence of the Charlie Charlie Challenge.

The second theory states that Donald Trump is the one behind it all. Trump’s campaign is based primarily on fear. He wants people to be afraid of immigration, the economy, and terrorist attacks so that he can appear to the Savior of the people who will fix everything. Perhaps he may even save us from the clowns if he was elected. It would be very convenient if the attacks halted if he was elected, wouldn’t it? The last and most disturbing theory is that these clowns are part of a secret cult that worships John Wayne Gacy, the original killer clown. Gacy was a serial killer that killed 33 people from 1972 and 1978 in Cook County Illinois. Whatever the case may be use your common sense and be aware of your surroundings.

By Ricky Tamayo Teens and kids this day in age seem to have their own special English if you’ve paid attention to the way they have grown to talk. Kids mainly learn to change their way of speaking because of today’s society and what is trending or hip has them see as a cool way of living. Many adults who bash on slang today even had their own type of slang back in the day. Slang is a type of language that consists of words and phrases that are regarded as very informal, are more common in speech than writing, and are typically restrict-

ed to a particular context or group of people- according to Google.com. Much of the words we use today actually started up as slang and what now may be a common word. Most of the slang we may know of growing up usually came from the 1960s era. Estimated around 150 words came from the 60s generation with their unique way of living and later on revolving onto the way they became to talk. Today these days’ kids have been talking with slang to seem cool usually learned from an older or “cooler” individual. In a way, it brainwashes their

brain to speak in a juvenile manner. Cordell says, “I think slang is cool to an extent but I believe the slang we have now is getting to the point where it’s too much.” Cordell Doss believes that one day it is going to take over the way people will think and it should change, people should learn to speak in proper grammar and it is what is wrong with America today. Trace also believes we should completely get rid of slang in general because he is tired of it and not for a grammar person as himself.

By Paulina Rodriguez Happy Birthday, Kendall Jenner as she celebrated her twenty-first birthday on November 3, 2016. If you have her on snapchat or any of her other siblings, Kylie Jenner, Khloe Kardashian, or Kourtney Kardashian, you could tell she was having a blast. One of her siblings, Kim Kardashian, was not present due to the fact that she has been hiding behind closed doors. Ever since she was robbed at gunpoint, she’s been away from social media and public places. We all know what happens when people turn twenty -one. Well, the Jenner got so drunk she forgot that her family members purchased her a $250,000 car. What a crazy girl! Let’s just say she will never forget her 21st birthday party.

Free Kevin Gates! He was sentenced to jail for 180 days for kicking a fan in the face. He kicked her about a year ago and went to trial this past month. There was a video posted on social media where it shows all the details. When I watched it, I immediately thought that the girl needs to keep her hands to herself. Kevin Gates obviously needs to attend anger management classes. Who gets that mad just because she touched him on his leg? I would want a refund after that. Third term Obama! Thank you for being our president for eight years and handling things the best of your abilities. If I was president I would have quit. I think he handled all the criticism people

threw at him! I wish nothing but the best for you and your family. Let’s see how much better America can get with our new president. Who doesn’t like learning about rich famous people because I know I do! Even though it makes me feel very poor. That is it for the celebrity news of the week.

How do you make people believe you when being honest? No matter what you do and how honest you are people will only believe what comes out of other people’s mouths they choose not to believe you. If it’s your friends though then that just goes to show that they are not your real friends because true friends always believe you and know your being honest. All you can do is continue to do you and not care what others think if you know the truth then that is all that matters. How do I get a popular guy to talk to me? Talk to him, if he acts stuck up and pretends you don’t exist then that just shows that he doesn’t like you. It also shows he is not the guy for you and you deserve better. How do you ask a girl out? Well first of all you start off by getting dressed up all nice because you don’t want to look like a homeless person when you do it. Second do something cute like get her flowers with a card saying “I’ve liked you for a long time, and think you are really beautiful so will you go out with me?” Then you just sit and wait for an answer, but if she says no you calmly say “Your loss” and walk away because she doesn’t know what she is missing out on. Who actually killed Harambe? That is a question running through the minds of every high school student in the country, but the world may never know. Some believe it was the zoo keeper at the zoo where he lived. Some people say it was Springfield. Some say it was Wiley. Millions say it was Hilary Clinton. But I believe it is all of the above.

By Leo Martinez There have been many exciting things happening for all those nerds out there. First off on the list is the long anticipated Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare. Reviews from IGN state that CoD did a really good job with this one. IGN rates it a 9.1/10. If you ask me I think they’re paid to give the game a good review. Once you pick up CoD it’s pretty much the same thing only a little more futuristic. They try too hard to be like other games. They need to get back to their basic, say a lot of gamers without all the boosts and futuristic guns. Like Battlefield One which is taking the world by storm. Servers are clogged with the amount of traffic BFO is getting. In other news, the PS4 Pro is not what everyone thought it would be. “The

PS4 Pro is powerful, but the lack of uniform support holds it back a bit,” says IGN.com. Everyone agrees that there is nothing that really makes regular PS4 players jealous. However, it should make Xbox One players very jealous. Considering that PS4 is way better than Xbox but that’s just something everyone knows. The Walking Dead taking fans by storm the first episode but lacking flavor in its follow ups. Many fans on twitter are complaining that it lost its extreme momentum from the last two episodes. And more than the majority of the crowd are hurt from the losses of the recent Characters. No spoilers in this article, though! Lastly, I saved the best for last. Call of Duty Modern Warfare 1 Remastered

Edition, has been long waited for gamers everywhere, myself included. Why would you want a game that is just the same thing you’ve already played before? Well, that’s a good question you may ask. The thing is wouldn’t you love to go back to playing tag at recess with your friend group back in fifth grade? MW1 has good memories for many players, and going back to the basics of call of duty is something you can’t really do anymore. Considering all the servers were shut down, but now you can go back and play MW1 and get attack helicopters and puppy kill streaks instead of these lame new ones.

By Alexandria Gutierrez In 1621, the Plymouth colonists and Wampanoag Indians shared an autumn harvest feast that is acknowledged today as one of the first Thanksgiving celebrations in the colonies. Thanksgiving is a time of year to give thanks for everything everyone has ever done for them. Thanksgiving is a time where friends and family can get together to eat a bunch of delicious foods and visit with people. It is such an exciting time to be able to catch up with people who you have not seen in a long time! For Thanksgiving, my family goes over to my grandma’s house and eats. Some people just stay home for Thanksgiving and eat with their own family. The Thanksgiving meal often includes turkey, stuffing, mashed potatoes

and gravy, vegetables, cranberry sauce, and pumpkin pie. Some families come down and they take pictures because they don’t ever get to see each other throughout the year, except for Thanksgiving or Christmas. Volunteering on Thanksgiving Day is common, and communities often hold food drives and host free dinner for the less fortunate. Parades have also become a part of the holiday “tradition” in cities across the United States. Thanksgiving Day was first recognized as a national holiday in 1863, during the American Civil War. Each year on the fourth Thursday in November, Americans will gather for a day of feasting, hang out with their family and watch the football game. Thanksgiving

has been celebrated as a federal holiday, not a national holiday. Thanksgiving is historically the busiest travel holiday of the year. They travel in cars, trains, and by plane. Thanksgiving Day contains public ceremonies and traditions as well. The Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade takes place in New York City every year. Thanksgiving is a time to give thanks to everyone who has helped you in any way and also gives you time to visit your family and friends.

By Marie Gomez As many of you know, I am employed at Subway here in Holly. It is a great job that I very much enjoy! Since Holly is a small town, we don’t get too busy so I always converse while I work. Many of you have probably even sat down and talked to me while I cleaned the dining area. All subways are generally the same, but there are some local advantages of our Subway. We continuously mail out coupons to local post offices such as Holly, Hartman, and Granada. If ever in need, we sometimes have left over coupons so we can hook you up with. We also have a Sub of the Day discount where

you get a cheaper meal of you buy it on the day that is applicable. I also constantly give away free broken cookies or cookies that are too dark to sell. Subway headquarters is really picky about how we present our items, so everything has to be perfect. The bread has to be exactly 12 inches in length, or else we have to throw it out. The cookies cannot be too light or too dark. We have to be updated with every single panel visible to the customers. We constantly get notified of a new sandwich and right away we must deliver it to the customer! The new sandwich right now is the Carved Turkey

with Cranberry Mustard sauce. I personally have not tried it but that should not stop anyone else. A lot of people don’t know about free samples. If you’re ever tempted to buy something, but you’ve never tried it, ask for a free sample, and we will kindly give you one. Working at Subway is fun for me even though I only get paid minimum wage. Anytime you want to save money, ask me for cheaper options and ill help you out!

By Robert Gutierrez There has been a lot of important news lately. Most of the attention has been focused toward the rapper Kevin Gates. Gates has recently been sentenced to 6 months in prison after allegedly attacking a fan at one of his concerts. A jury (all women) found Gates guilty of misdemeanor battery last Wednesday (November 2nd). At the concert, the young woman repeatedly grabbed at Gates’s shorts after he had warned her multiple times to stop. When she continued to touch Kevin (in front of his young kid and wife) he kicked her in the chest to get her off of him. This incident was videotaped and presented to the judge and jury against

Gates which put him in a pickle. Kevin pleaded not guilty, insisting that he had the right for the “stand your ground” law against the young fan, but I could see how it would be hard to convince a jury full of women to find you not guilty. This case has gotten a lot of attention for the controversy. Fans even came with the hashtag, #FreeGates. Some more news, 5 people who say they belong to “Islamic State” have been arrested in Germany. These men were suspected terrorists who were believed to be recruiting people to go join IS. (Islamic State.) Authorities were able to prove that these men were

guilty due to their uploads of videos on the internet, and “suspicious” emails and phone calls. One of the men were charged with attempted terrorism for trying to organize an attack in Germany. The man was stopped before anything could be carried out.

By Sigi Avalos The 2016 MLB World Series was a thriller that will be one to remember for many years to come. The two teams that battled it out through the whole 7 games were the Chicago Cubs and the Cleveland Indians. Both teams had many years without having an appearance at the World Series. The Chicago Cubs last appearance at the World Series was 1945 which is 71 years ago and for the Indians was the year 1977, making it 39 years ago. The Cleveland Indians gained a lot of momentum because of the Cavaliers historic comeback against the Golden State Warriors being down three games to one. The last championship the Indi-

ans have won was 1948 against the Boston Braves. They were hoping to do a little history themselves. Both teams looked promising but the Indians got off to a start that looked like it was over for the Cubs. Just like the Warriors and cavaliers game except switched the other way around with Cleveland on top. The same results then kept happening with the Cubs winning games and making a comeback. With everyone saying how the Warriors choked people feared that it would happen to the Indians. Thinking the whole series was over the unexpected happened. The Chicago Cubs made it happen

coming all the way back and taking the four to three games to complete the full comeback to win the 2016 World Series. Game 7 was the best of them all because they went into extra innings. Through the 10 innings the Cubs managed to win 8-7 and finally break the curse. There were multiple of stars that participated in this exciting best of 7 series, stars like Chris Bryant, Dexter Fowler, and more. Surely this World Series was the best that the Cubs have experienced and the worst for the Indians.

By Trace Salzbrenner The Farm-City banquet is an annual banquet that is held in Lamar every year to bring together farmers and business owners for a shared meal, this year was a roast beef with green beans and mashed potatoes, with entertainment, which was country music singer and songwriter James Otto. Also, every year the District FFA Association helps by preparing the meal and serving the meal to all who come to enjoy the festivities. At four o’clock Saturday evening two Holly FFA students Juanita Rodriguez and Trace Salzbrenner (freshmen Kyea Comer and Grayden Flint met them in Lamar) arrived at the ag shop to help load salad and roasters before heading

off to Lamar for three hours of preparing for the banquet. Each school brought a different piece of the meal, Holly brought the salad, and upon arrival the schools worked to place tables and make last minute preparations. When people started to arrive, it was the FFA member’s responsibility to seat, serve, and tend to the farmers, business owners, and community members. “My responsibility was to get drinks for everyone,” commented Kyea Comer when asked what her job was at the banquet. All night the students fetched drinks such as water and tea and brought extra condiments as requested. “The hardest part was trying to get eve-

rything for people,” stated Grayden Flint when asked about the Farm City Banquet. The best part of the night was singer and songwriter James Otto’s concert. He used an acoustic guitar and a small set up to entertain the night’s patrons with older and newer music. All in all, the Farm-City Banquet was a success. “I look forward to it next year,” said freshman Grayden Flint about next year’s banquet. It is no doubt that the Farm-City Banquet will continue to be a success in the coming years.
