SIGHT WORDS:
Blog: http:// mrsdeciskindergarten.blogspot. com/
This week we will be starting our sight word homework list. Each Monday you will receive a list of sight words in your child’s folder. You should practice identifying these words each night with your son or daughter. These words should be read by sight. You do not have to help your child write/spell the words, he/she should be able to recognize the words by sight in context (a sentence) or in isolation. You can simply read the words from the list or here are some additional suggestions for helping your child learn the words. • Make flashcards with the words on them. • Play a game of “memory”. Make two flashcards for each word and turn them face down. Each player gets to turn over two cards (reading the words as they are turned over), if the words match than it is a pair and the player keeps the cards. The player with the most matches wins! • Play a “grab bag” game. Put all of the words on small pieces of paper and place them in a bag. Allow your child to reach into the bag and grab a word. If he/she reads the word correctly they can keep the word, otherwise put it back in the bag and continue until all words are read correctly. Learning the most common sight words will help your child begin to read and write with more ease and confidence. Please sign the list nightly and return it in your child’s folder. Happy Reading!
HOME SCHOOL CONNECTION: Throughout the school year I will suggest meaningful and hopefully fun activity for you to complete with your child at home. These activities should be sent to school when complete. This week, I encourage you to help your child identify “environmental print” around your home. This is print that they are already familiar with. Examples include food labels (Cheerios, Gold Fish, etc…), corporations (Walmart, Target, and McDonalds, etc…). Please cut out and send any examples of environmental print around your home to school. They will be displayed in our library as examples of words we can already read!
