Peterson’s Points Things to be thankful for at CIS

November 2016

Cambridge Family Dental’s 5th Annual Candy Buy-Back program… Benefits YOU, our TROOPS, and our local TEACHERS!

As we enter our third month of school and have settled in our routines, I have had a chance to acknowledge the many things I am thankful for at Cambridge Intermediate School:

Here’s how it works: Bring your leftover Halloween candy to Cambridge Family Dental (located behind Culvers and Caribou Coffee) between November 1-11 and you will receive $2 per pound (up to 5 lbs).

Technology—devices that enhance learning!

Their goal is to collect candy for the troops and donate money to the local schools!

Healthy Snacks and lunches—fueling us for a day of learning!

Amazing support staff and teachers! New experiences and opportunities every day! Kids who are eager to learn!

Picture Retake Day is on Wednesday, November 2nd from 8:15-9:45 am. Do you want a second chance at a picture perfect image? Simply return your original package on Retake Day.

Unique approaches to learning!

3rd Grade News A Love of Reading Third grade students love to be read to by their parents! During read aloud time in class, it is always rewarding to see the students that are so absorbed in the story that nothing could break their focus! They are deep in thought imagining the pictures that the words create in their minds. Reading to your child develops listening skills, plot development, comprehension, and a love for books. Remember that even if your child is an independent reader, the time spent reading stories to your child will be a time you will treasure for years to come. A Change in the Weather Changes in the weather will be happening. Our cold Minnesota winter is just around the corner. We continue to go outside for recess in the winter, unless the temperature dips below 0. Recess is much more enjoyable when children are dressed properly. When appropriate, please send a warm coat, snow pants, boots hats and mittens with your child. A big thank you! Thank you to all who attended conferences in October. It was beneficial for both parents and teachers! Students are learning to be responsible with their planners! Third graders are well into learning their routines of the new school year. Please check the planners each night for information about your child’s day.

LOST & FOUND: The Lost and Found is growing! Remind your child to check the cafeteria for any items that belong to them! It’s always helpful to label your child’s clothing so we can return it to its proper owner!

4th Grade News October was a busy month for fourth graders! They finished their first Micro business, earning Micro money for work completed in the areas of social studies, science and health. Please ask them about their first business and how much money they earned. They were given the opportunity to earn $700 so far. The last day of their second business is November 14, so please check with them to make sure they have all work completed before that date! The first Micro reward party will take place shortly after that, where students can use their Micro money to watch a movie, make crafts, or play some games if they have enough Micro money to do so. They've been very excited!

Just a couple of reminders: healthy snacks, warm clothes for recess, and MASTER those multiplication facts! Math becomes REALLY difficult (and time consuming) for students who have not memorized those basic facts! It was great seeing so many involved parents at conferences! Your support of what we do here makes a difference! Thank you!

5th Grade News The last week of October was our Red Ribbon Week where fifth graders participated in various activities to promote good decision making strategies and healthy living choices. There was great discussion and a lot of fun! Other news is that the Genre Genius Challenge has begun! Students have been given a tic-tac-toe grid and have been asked to read different book genres. Various genres include fiction, historical fiction, biography, fables/myths, mystery, realistic fiction, science fiction, sports, and non-fiction. After completing a book, students will take (and pass) an AR test for that book. Once a tic-tactoe is completed (across, down or diagonally) students will hand the grid in to their reading teacher. Their name is placed on the wall in the fifth grade hallway and a dog tag will be presented at the end of the trimester Blue Jacket Pride Recognition ceremony. GOOD LUCK FIFTH GRADERS!

Winter Wear Clothing Drive Every year we have students at CIS without the proper gear needed to stay warm during our cold Minnesota winters. Many students find themselves not being able to stay warm during recess and before and after school. As you go through your closets this fall, please consider donating any gently used winter items that are no longer needed in your household. Winter Jackets Snow Pants Mittens or Gloves Warm boots Winter Hats Sizes needed range from child small to adult large. Items donated will be given to students that are in need. Thank you for your help! Holly Sutherland, CIS School Counselor (763) 691-6607
