District N ewsletter M ay MESSAGE FROM THE SUPERINTENDENT Dear Sherwood Community & Staff, May has been a very busy month for all of our schools and District buildings! From preparations for final testing and graduation, to developing the 2017-18 budget, from continuing the planning for a new high school and other bond-funded projects, to getting ready to roll-out hundreds of devices to students in the fall! Like our staff, I'm sure your students and families are feeling the "buzz" of excitement as we near the end of another school year, and start thinking about all there is to look forward to during the summer months. It's one of my favorite times of the year celebrating the end of a year that's been full of projects and initiatives coming to completion, while looking ahead with promise and optimism on the great things we can achieve together next year when the planning gets underway early. Speaking of planning -- after months of development, we are pleased to be able to present to our Board of Directors the proposed 2017-18 budget that our Budget Committee approved on May 25, during the Board's Public Budget Hearing on June 14. Also, this summer, you'll notice some signage being posted at our buildings, thanking our community for support of our bond. The summer bond projects include deferred maintenance and other work at some schools throughout the District, such as entry vestibules, roofing repairs, HVAC work, and surface replacements, just to name a few (more on these and other updates later in this newsletter). I want to send thanks in advance to all of the staff who work through the summer and who will be integral in ensuring these projects are completed smoothly. I hope you all enjoy the remaining weeks of school and have much to look forward to in your summer plans! All the best, Heather

SPECIAL PROGRAMS PARTY Earlier this month, the Transportation Department hosted its 13th Annual Special Programs Party at the Cipole facility. The event, organized and run by the District's drivers, is carefully planned each year to provide our Special Education students from all grade levels a day filled with fun activities and entertainment. The preparations begin early, with the Transportation Department reaching out to staff and the community to raise funds and locate prizes for the annual raffle. Raffle ticket sales support the event by helping the drivers purchase food, supplies, entertainment, and goodie bags for the students. The Special Programs Party is staffed by members of the Sherwood School District Transportation and Maintenance Departments, as well as volunteers from Union Pacific Employees Club #9 and the Elks Club. After enjoying lunch and cotton candy served by the staff, students were mesmerized by a juggler and visited stations to engage in various games. The kids even got the chance to meet representatives from our local Sherwood Police and TVF&R and interacted with their vehicles and equipment.

Thank you to our drivers for your hard work, and to all the staff, volunteers and community members who helped make this wonderful event a great success again this year!
