January 2018 sidebysideministry.com & friend us on facebook at John-Paul Lutheran St. Paul Lutheran and St. John Lutheran, Lakeside-Marblehead, Ohio Our Vision: “To be a vibrant, Spirit-filled people, participating in God’s work in the world.” Our Mission: “Loving God and loving neighbor, we witness to Christ’s saving grace, that others may believe and find life.”

From Pastor Chris Two days after Christmas, I saw a friend on Facebook post that she was De-Christmasizing her house, and the first response was from another in total agreement. Our culture prepares us for Christmas from about the day after Halloween, so sometimes, by the time it arrives, we are tired of it and ready for it to be over. Christmas abruptly stops the day after – no more carols on the radio, Christmas programs on television cease, decorations begin to come down. The church gives us an alternative view. We prepare for Christmas in a different way, through reflection, repentance and focus on what God is doing in the gift of Jesus. We build up hope and Christmas Eve is when the celebration starts! We enter the Christmas Season in the church, by celebrating what God has done, is doing, and will do. We, too, move forward quickly from Jesus birth…right into what this birth means and how it plunges us into Jesus’ ministry to proclaim the Kingdom of God. The work of Christmas is just beginning for we who believe in the wonder of Christ. Jesus initiates his ministry by reading from the scroll of Isaiah, “He unrolled the scroll and found the place where it was written: 18 "The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he has anointed me to bring good news to the poor. He has sent me to proclaim release to the captives and recovery of sight to the blind, to let the oppressed go free, 19to proclaim the year of the Lord's favor." 20 And he rolled up the scroll, gave it back to the attendant, and sat down. The eyes of all in the synagogue were fixed on him. 21Then he began to say to them, "Today this scripture has been fulfilled in your hearing." (Luke 4) Jesus’ work given to him by God, is our work as the church. It is the work of Christmas now and always. These words have been set to music by contemporary hymn writer, Dan Forrest http://danforrest.com/music-catalog/the-work-of-christmas/ The Work of Christmas When the star in the sky is gone, when the Kings and Princes are home, When the shepherds are back with their flock, the work of Christmas begins: To find the lost, to heal the broken, to feed the hungry, To release the prisoner, to teach the nations, To bring Christ to all, to make music in the heart

CHURCH SECURITY UPDATE We are thankful to Russ Merckens and Bob Strauss for leading the efforts in making our church a safe place to gather. They also met, along with Danbury Police, with our Danbury Ministerial, for the sake of security for all our peninsula congregations. St. John and St. Paul building assessments have been done by Danbury Police and a list of possible building and procedural updates has been created for each congregation. Developing and implementing a security plan will be a gradual process. There are simple and effective ways to begin. The first is educating ourselves for prevention, and then educating ourselves for response. There will be a first tier response training for a smaller group for each church, and then the training will be offered to any and all in the congregation. Watch for more information on “ALICE” training, to be conducted by Danbury Police. (We are grateful that Danbury Police already regularly monitor parking lots and grounds around all the peninsula churches when we gather for worship each Sunday.)

Family Care Team We have a full team! Rev. Marv Rettig, Rev. Dane Meuschke, Marge Bridgett, Linda Otermat, Cheryl Laubner (Parish Nurse). This team will support Pastor Chris and the ministries to our families. This includes visitation to hospitalized, shut-ins, and post hospitalization as needed. Some on the team are able to help with funerals and/or follow-up as needed, some are able to help with worship leadership, and others have gifts for relationship, prayer, and/or study of scripture. They are all, at this point, considered on-call staff. The team will be rotating being on call on Fridays and Saturdays, enabling Pastor Chris to take those days off when possible. The team will meet once a month to pray and go over congregational needs. While much of what the team does is on a volunteer basis, compensation is built in for extra help requested by Pastor Chris, especially on her days off or during vacation time. We are so grateful for this group of caring, faithful, enthusiastic, and loving servants.
