Dear Parents and Friends of the School We are now over half way through Term 1 and are now in the Liturgical Season of Lent. The children have made Lenten promises to work on through this time. We will be learning to pray the Stations of the Cross throughout this time. Assembly This Friday 10 March at 2.15pm. Room 2 will be leading the prayers and Amy and Cameron from Mary House will be the hosts. Shrove Tuesday/Pancake Day Last Tuesday we celebrated the beginning of Lent by attending Mass where we received the ashes. Afterwards the children made pancakes. Each house made an extra-large one that was used for a House Pancake Race which was a lot of fun. The children had to run and flip their pancakes at the same time. It was very amusing to watch. Kiwisport Kiwisport is now well underway. Room 3 have Kiwisport on a Wednesday afternoon and Year 5-8 go on Friday afternoon. Swimming Cup Our Swimming Cup for 2017 was held on a beautiful sunny afternoon on Thursday 23 February. The results were as follows: Year 7/8 Swim Cup 1st Cameron Murphy 2nd Isaac Styles 3rd Amy Boult 4th Katie Hay

Year 5/6 Swim Cup 1st Emerson Murphy 2nd Caleb Kelly 3rd Ellie Andrews 4th Stevie Wallace

Everyone swam well and it was great to see so many children competing in all events, especially the swimming cup itself. Rural Swimming Sports The Rural Swimming Sports will be held on Tuesday 21 March at CBay. The following children from St Joseph’s will be competing in this event: Boston Mason, Connor Howes, Caleb Kelly, Bryn Chisholm, Isaac Styles, Emerson Murphy, Lauren Bolton, Stevie Wallace, Ellie Andrews, Amy Boult and Cameron Murphy.

All information for this event has gone home. We wish all our swimmers the very best. SC Triathlon On Thursday 23 March, the following children will be competing in the South Canterbury Triathlon held at Caroline Bay and CBay: Year 7/8: Cameron Murphy and Amy Boult. Year 5/6: Connor Howes, Ellie Andrews, Lauren Bolton, Ava Yellowlees, Stevie Wallace, Honour Andrews and Emerson Murphy. Most information about this event has gone home, with final details coming home in the week of the event. A big thank you to Brent Yellowlees and Helen Andrews who have offered to look after the team and assist with the transport of the children and their bikes. If anyone else is available to assist, please let the office know. Participation in events like these can only happen with parental support. Room 4 Vinnies Group We will be reviving the Vinnies Group once again, beginning with an introduction for Room 4 on Monday 19 March. Maria will be working with the children and Mrs Scott. The first session will discuss what Vinnies is and what it does and the children will have input of what they can do to be of service to others throughout the year. Jubilate South Canterbury A Catholic Primary Schools Music Festival was held in Christchurch last year. This year they are holding one for Mid and South Canterbury Catholic Schools on Tuesday 11 April at Timaru’s Sacred Heart Basilica. It is for Year 5(most)-8 children. The children had their first practise with Ken Joblin (Sacred Music Co-ordinator) and David O’Beirne (Sacred Arts Administrator) on Tuesday morning. The festival programme is not musically demanding and is designed to be completed in 45mins. The music reflects Holy Week and Easter. On the day the children in the choir have a rehearsal at 11am, followed by lunch, with the concert beginning at 1pm. We would love the parents, grandparents of the children in the choir to join us to be part of the concert audience. Life Education Visit Harold will be visiting us again on the 29 & 30 March. This year our focus is on Food. Our big question is, “Why do we need to eat different kinds of foods throughout the day?” The children will learn what are good food choices for breakfast, morning tea, lunch, afternoon tea and dinner. Also what foods help our brain and give us sustained energy for sport. Young Leaders Day Our Year 7/8 children will be participating with other Young Leaders from our Catholic Schools in Young Leaders’ Day, which will be held on Wednesday April 5 at St Joseph’s, Timaru. There will be keynote speakers from Roncalli Head Students; a variety of Workshops on topics such as meditation, Team Building, Prayers, Trust and Art; and an address from Mayor Damon Odey. It should be an inspiring day for our young leaders of the future.

Have A Go Day On Friday 31 March our Year 7/8 leaders are off to Aorangi Park to participate in Have A Go Day. This is where they try out a variety of sports as a team. Will be lots of fun. St John St John will be working with all three classes on Monday 10 April, teaching First Aid Skills. First aid skills are invaluable for all of us. Whole School Mass We will be celebrating Palm Sunday with a whole school Mass on Saturday 8 April. Easter Liturgy On the last Thursday of the term (13 April), we will be holding an Easter Liturgy here at school. It will be a prayer liturgy around the Stations of the Cross. More details nearer the time. PTA Donation The PTA kindly donated $7,000.00 to the school. Some of this money has been spent on the following for the children: $2,431.03 on new sports equipment; $736.20 on library books with a total budget of $1,500; $886.60 on stereos and a Bluetooth speaker for classroom use; and $468.80 on sandpit toys. We have still yet to purchase goals for soccer and new wraps for the rugby posts. We are greatly appreciative of the PTA, and the money has been put to good use by purchasing things that the children need and use. After School Sports Practices Children, parents and siblings of those who are involved in after school sports practices are most welcome to be at school. We ask parents to actively supervise your children who are not involved; outside the classrooms only. They are not to be inside as teachers are working. If you are a parent and can help the coach with the team, this would be great also. If you are a parent or child not involved in the practise we ask that you go home so the children can focus on their practise. Thank you for your assistance. Appointments to see the Principal and Staff If you wish to discuss a matter with the Principal or a staff member it would be appreciated if you would make an appointment. Appointments to see the Principal may be made through the office. Appointments to see the staff need to be made directly with them. Staff appointments should be made between 3-4pm; and not before school as teachers are getting ready for the day and like to be in class when the children arrive. Appointments with the Principal can be made between 8.30am and 4pm. It is important that on making an appointment, that you inform the person of what it is you wish to discuss. Staff may wish to have another staff member with them and we are keeping a written record of the meeting. It is not appropriate to just turn up and expect to discuss a matter when the person is unprepared. This is a

Catholic School where we treat everyone with respect and we would like the same courtesy to apply to the staff. Thank you for assistance. Camp Room 4 are all eagerly looking forward to their camp at Pudding Hill from Tuesday to Friday next week. Mrs. Scott, Ms. Ewer, and our two parent helpers; Wayne Andrews and Robert McNamee will be taking the children on some fantastic activities; e.g. jet boating on the Rakaia River, Horse Trekking. We look forward to hearing all about their adventures and seeing photos when they return. Star Students Congratulations to the following students who received awards at assembly on 24 February 2017: Star Students: Alea Morrison, Tyla Kelly, Cameron Murphy. MacKillop Values: Brooklyn Feely, Harry Boult, Bryn Chisholm. Habits of Mind: Harry Jones, Stevie Wallace, Caleb Kelly. Winning House: Mary & Patrick.

By Isaac Styles On Thursday 23 February, the school went to Room 1 for a small snippet of Josh Grimaldi’s Magic Show. Josh greeted us and we said “Hello” back. His first trick was with a blue handkerchief, which he made disappear and reappear in Dawson McCall’s shirtsleeve. Everyone was impressed. Josh then asked Dawson to come up to the front to help him. He handed him a plastic wand, which looked sturdy enough, but flopped down as soon as he handed it to Dawson. Everybody laughed. He then told Dawson to sit down and asked for another volunteer. Josh chose Lauren. He performed a water trick with Lauren involving a small glass and a water bottle. Once again, everyone laughed at this trick. We all enjoyed Josh’s performance. By Ellie Andrews On the 23 February, St Joseph’s School held their Swim Cup at the Pleasant Point swimming pool. The students did lengths, widths, a medley and a house relay. Everybody got to have a go, and at the end all the little children in Room 2 got to have a swim in the smaller pool. The older children got to have a free swim in the big pool. Then Mrs. Scott said to hop out of the pool and get dressed. After we were dressed, we lined up outside the changing rooms and went back to school about 2.30pm. It was so much fun; I can’t wait until next year when we have swimming cup again.
