There is a wonderful opportunity for students and families to participate in a ‘Night Sky’ experience this Saturday evening here at Carisbrook School starting at 8.00pm. We are extremely lucky to have Mike Broughton and several other night sky observers providing powerful telescopes for students and family members to observe the stars and five planets that will be visible through telescope at present. Apparently this is the time of year to get the clearest views of the stars, constellations and planets. If you are interested, please complete the attached ‘Night Sky Telescope Opportunity’ return slip on page 2 and return this to the school office on Friday. An exciting night ahead for our youngest members of Carisbrook School as today is the year 0-1 sleepover, over 40 5 and 6 year olds and their teachers are sleeping in the classroom of the Main Site Junior Block. A reminder to our Pasifika community that the Carisbrook Pasifika Fono is being held tonight at school starting in Miss Watts class, Kekeno. The Fono starts at 6.00pm with an information session for parents and caregivers on how to support your children with maths, taken by our lead teacher of maths, Ms Freeman and our maths specialist teacher Mrs Griffiths. At 6.30pm our Carisbrook Pasifika group will perform in our school library and then we will progress through to the staffroom for supper. Both our Kapa Haka groups and Pasifika performance groups are in full swing preparing for next weeks performances at the Otago Schools Polyfest. A lot of hard work has gone on behind the scenes from the performance students, the tutors and the Carisbrook staff who are assisting with the groups. We look forward to the performances next week on Friday at the Edgar Centre Lion Foundation Arena.
Resilient Responsible Respectful
I would like to thank the community for their support on Wednesday afternoon in regard to the teachers stop work meeting. It was important for us to get as many teachers as possible to the meeting as it was discussing some major changes that the government are looking at for our schools. Many of these proposed funding changes will have a negative effect on the quality of education that schools are currently providing. The less the amount of money being provided to schools, the fewer opportunities that schools will be able to provide for students, less teacher support for students, less teacher aide support for students and fewer learning resources available to support students. It was a very good turn out on Tuesday evening for the ‘Singapore Cultural Exchange’ information evening. The evening provided people with information about the exchange, the highlights of the 2016 exchange, benefits for the student participants, fundraising and costs. Next week enrolment forms for the 2017 and the 2018 Singapore Cultural Exchange will be sent home with year six and year seven students. The year six students have two years to raise their $2000 contribution that equates to $20.00 per week. The year seven students have the bigger challenge of raising their $2000 in one year, equating $40.00 per week. As a group, the exchange students and I will be working hard at fundraising for the additional funds required. Regards Ben Sincock, Principal

Are you interested in having cheaper internet access and phone charges?
Carisbrook School is involved in a project supported by Dunedin Rotary Clubs and in partnership with internet provider Greenfields Limited. The Rotary Wi-Fi project will take families with a copper phone line and convert them to a digital phone connection, a ‘voice over internet’ system. Receiver boxes will be installed on the roofs of the participating houses and a small tower erected on the roof of a school building. This will cost significantly less than what households are currently paying for their phone landline and internet. Households will be pay monthly for the new phone connection and have free access to the internet through the school system. We are initially after twenty households to be set up on this system and utilise our Carisbrook School ultra fast broadband internet. There is the potential to have fifty households connected in the first year and extended to 150 households in the second year of operation. If you are interested in learning more about this opportunity and coming along to an information session please complete the attached ‘expression of interest’ slip. ……………………………………………………………………………………………………...………………………………………………… Cheap Internet/Phone Expression of Interest:I am interested in being provided with cheaper phone and internet access through this initiative and would like to attend an information session at Carisbrook School.
