Principal’s Report

Kia ora, talofa lava, kia orana, malo e lelei, fakaalofa lahi atu, bula vinaka, namaste, ni hao, nei ho, selamat, konnichiwa, kamusta, salam, malo ni & greetings.

The term is almost at an end and we have been very fortunate not to have lost a school day to snow. If we don’t have a snow day next term then 2017 will be the first year since Carisbrook School opened that we have not closed for snow. Some of our students could really do with a couple of weeks away from school. This afternoon many of our year two students are off on their adventure to stay at the Otago Museum tonight. The museum overnight stay is a big highlight for our students who get the opportunity to participate in the many hands on activities that are available in Discovery World. The science and technology activities are very educational and teach our students through fun and exciting interactive activities. The students should also be treated to a night time walk through the part of the museum where many of the stuffed animals and creatures are stored. Often this tour is done by flashlight that makes it more thrilling. Teachers are in the final stages of writing student reports and these will be sent home to everyone early next term. We are really hoping for a great turn out of parents and caregivers for the upcoming school interviews. For the senior, middle and some of the junior classes the students will lead the three way interview, sharing their learning, their achievements, and their next learning steps with you. I continue to be impressed with the interesting inquiry projects that many of our senior students select, the research that they undertake and their presentations of their research.

Resilient Responsible Respectful

We have had several inquiries from parents and other members of our community regarding ‘Computers in Homes’ training courses. A reminder to everyone that ‘Computers in Homes’ has stopped on a national basis. This is because the government has decided to no longer provide the funding for this project. The final courses are just coming to an end now. This had been a fantastic initiative that provided twenty hours of computer training to the participants and hey each ended up by being provided a computer and cheap internet access for a year. Who knows, it may reappear after next years budget. Congratulations to one of our senior volleyball teams that won the volleyball tournament held at Bayfield School earlier this week. Some very good skills displayed by our students who went on to win the tournament undefeated. Later this year we have our Beckenham School sports exchange and we hope that volleyball is one of the sports that Beckenham have selected. This time we travel to Christchurch to compete against Beckenham in three sports. Tomorrow we farewell our caretaker Jim who has decided to retire and enjoy more time in his garden, his greenhouse and spending lots of time with family. We take this opportunity to wish Jim all the best and to thank him for being with us since Carisbrook School opened in 2012. No more early starts with the boiler Jim on those cold mornings. Sleep in and enjoy. We wish everyone a safe and enjoyable school break and look forward to welcoming everyone back on Monday 24th July at our usual time of 9.00am Regards Ben Sincock Principal

Carisbrook School Holiday Programme

Enrolments for the holiday programme have now closed. Children attending will require a packed lunch each day. Morning and afternoon tea will be supplied. A jam packed super school holiday experience these July school holidays with many trips, activities, prizes and games. These include Junior Bake-off Day and a trip to The Sinclair Wetlands (gumboots recommended or strong shoes, and/or change of shoes and socks to change into upon return to school). At The Wetlands we will experience the amazing birds and creatures, up close. We will also have a Mid-Winter Christmas Party, where you come dressed in your favourite gear, go to the Movies and to Discovery World. Our July Programme is all planned and ready for more great fun and adventure"

In brief    

Domino’s Pizzas - Price has now gone up to $3 each. Pizzas can be order at the school office every Tuesday. Canteen Orders - If your child is ordering their lunch please send them with the correct change (no large notes) as we have limited cash on site for giving change. Lateness - We have had an increasingly large number of children arriving at school after the 9am start time. Children who are late miss out on important lessons such as reading, writing and maths; they also disrupt the class upon there arrival. Please have them at school on time. Thank you. Parking - We have had another complaint from residents on Surrey Street about cars parking over driveways and on yellow lines. Please be considerate when dropping off or picking up your child from school. There is a designated pick up and drop off point on South Road

Keen Gardener Wanted

If you are a keen gardener we are looking for someone to support a group of students in re-planting and hanging the planters back in the Caversham area. We have everything at school but need your support please. It would only be a couple of hours per week.

Wanted….

Looking for unwanted working sewing machines, fabrics and cottons. We are looking for any working sewing machines, fabrics, cottons etc. for an upcoming project with students at Carisbrook School. The project will be aimed at getting rid of single use plastic bags. We will be teaching the kids to sew reusable bags, produce bags, lunch wraps and snack bags and getting these out in the community for everyone to have access to. This is following on from Carisbrook School’s drive to ban single use plastic bags. If you have any working sewing machines you would like to donate to us it would be hugely appreciated. Also any unwanted fabrics & cottons that could be used for this project would be very much appreciated as well! Email [email protected] to donate. We can collect (phone Sande on 4878 670) or drop into Carisbrook School for me to sort out! Help us help the environment!! Many thanks!

Our wonderful caretaker, Jim retires on Friday after 13 years on the job. The Rainbow Room celebrated all the great things that Jim has done for them.

A group of children had a great time making and then flying their own kites. The smiles on their faces were wonderful to see.
