Principal’s News
New Entrant - Cohort Entry for 2018 Thank you for your feedback on the new cohort entry for new entrants next year. The feedback was positive and in favour of the new system (89%), which we will adopt next year. If you have a child starting next year and are unsure of start dates give the office a call or pop in for a chat. There have been a couple of points of discussion that have popped up in the survey, and I would like to clarify a few things around this change: ● It is completely the parent’s choice whether you wish to start them prior to their 5th birthday or up until their 6th birthday. You do not have to start your child’s schooling before they are 5 years old if you do not believe your child is ready for school. ● Even for students starting school at 5 years old, it can be an exhausting and tiring time for students. Feel free to talk to us to help manage this. ● When a new child starts school, it is a big step for them. We want to provide the best transition we can. Having one transition to school a term allows this time to be explicitly taught and reviewed with the whole class, so the message is consistent and clear. This is more difficult when there are up to 8-10 new students starting at different times of the term when routines are already established, and new students were there at the time when they were discussed. ● This will give the opportunity to combine transitions for new students and reminders to existing students of school routines and expectations, as well as introducing any new initiatives that might be taking place for the term. ● When five year olds start school, we do make an effort to maintain constant communication with parents/caregivers, and we will be informally asking for your feedback after the implementation of this initiative. School Uniform Reminder to everyone that our school shoes should be plain black. This excludes sneakers with brand names and colouring on the sides and tops. Also, socks for boys are black or navy blue, and for girls they are black, navy blue, or white. If your child is coming to school with non-regulation uniform, can you please send them with a note so we know that something is being organised. Cross Country Thankfully the weather came right on Monday and we were able to run the cross country. The team is up on the school website for the MT SPA Cross Country in Manaia tomorrow. We need transport to get to Manaia. If you are available to help please be at school at 10.30am. We need to be registered and assembled by 11.00am at the domain. As we are taking a large group, we would like to be earlier to ensure we get seating. The first race starts at 11.15am, going in order of age, with the girls running first.

Taranaki Trophy We had our last matchup today against St Joseph's Stratford, and results were tight across the board. Our netball team lost by four goals in a tightly contested affair. It was a great effort in some pretty testing conditions, with a strong cross wind blowing across the court. Despite spending the final 20 minutes camped in the St Joseph’s goal box, our football team lost 1-0, and the rugby team came out with a strong win by 30 points. The rugby boys scored three quick tries at the beginning and then had to endure some pressure from St Joseph’s, but they remained resolute and held their line to come away with a good win. It has been great to watch all three teams compete this year. I am proud of how our students represent the school and never gave up. A big thanks to all the parents/caregivers who helped with coaching, and organising things behind the scene. Sports Uniforms As there are no more Taranaki Trophy games, can all uniforms please be washed and returned to school. A reminder text messages will be sent home for all basketball, netball and the Crowley Cup uniforms that are still outstanding. Can all parents please have a check at home and send any uniforms back to school ASAP. Touch For all students who are keen to play touch next term, please jump online and register by TOMORROW. There are no subs for touch. We need parent help for coaching these teams. Games are played on Tuesday’s on the fields behind Sandfords Event Centre. If you can help please pop your details in when registering your kid/s. Nga mihi nui kia koutou, Jarad Chittenden, Principal
