www.olshrandwick.catholic.edu.au Email—[email protected] Dear Parents, Carers, Staff and Students, Congratulations to the students in Year 6 who were presented to the Parish community over the weekend in preparation for the Sacrament of Confirmation. The Year 6 students and their parents will be involved in a Parish based program that includes Home groups meeting together for two sessions on the sacrament and then concluding with a Home mass. Thank you to the large number of parents who volunteered to be facilitators. We ask you to keep Year 6 in your prayers as they make the journey towards full initiation into the Catholic Church. This week the students in Years 3 and 5 undergo NAPLAN testing that measures student performance in English and Mathematics. This assessment is one part of the many ways we assess student progress. The students are well prepared, with excellent teaching in their primary school years. The assessments are held over 3 days: Tuesday 10th May Language Conventions (Spelling, Grammar and Punctuation) and Writing Wednesday 11th May Reading Thursday 12th May Mathematics Mrs McAdam has sent a special message wishing all Year 3 & 5 students the best of luck with Naplan this week. Special thanks to our wonderful P&F for the success of the Mother’s Day celebrations.

A reminder that the P&F Meeting will be held this Tuesday 10 th May at 7.00pm. You are invited to come and listen to the guest speaker Brenda Janschek, presenting ―Teaching our kids to eat produce not packets, why it’s more important than ever before’’. Maintaining health, nutrition and general wellbeing are a key focus for families in the busyness of each week. After school Bingo will be held this Friday 13th May in the school hall 3.30-5pm. Feast of Pentecost celebrated next Sunday. May God’s Spirit guide us this week. For the Spirit of Peace that calms our mind and stills our life, we give You thanks. For the Spirit of Love that touches hearts and reaches out, we give You thanks. For the Spirit of Joy that lifts our soul and gives us faith, we give You thanks. For the Spirit of Power, that gift of grace, for this Your church, we give You thanks.

Dear Parents and Caregivers, I hope all mothers, grandmothers, godmothers and those who have a maternal role to others had a memorable Mother’s Day with families and loved ones. To develop a strong faith support network for your children to grow up in, it is important that the school, parish and families share the same practices in their faith life. Therefore, starting from this term till the end of the year, a child from each class will have the opportunity to take home the Home Prayer Bag for a week (Friday to Friday). In the bag, there are items which will allow your child to set up a prayer space and to lead the family in prayers:  4 liturgical colour cloths, a crucifix, tea light candles, rosary beads  A booklet with suggested prayers  A bedtime prayer booklet (tied with a blue and white small cushion)  A prayer journal  A die with different prayers before meal time All students have been shown what is in the prayer bag as well as what they are to do with it, when they are at home as the prayer leaders of the family. I sincerely hope that you can take a short time out of your busy-ness to stop and pray with your child as a family. Allow them to experience and see the wonderful family that our Lord has given both to you and them. I would love to hear your experiences when using the prayer bag. You are more than welcome to email me with ‘shareable’ moments. Kind Regards Loretta Lam Family Educator [email protected] To be a Christian without prayer is no more possible than to be alive without breathing. Martin Luther

Thank you to all who attended our Mother’s Day Liturgy on Friday. These are always lovely occasions when our school community can come together in celebration. Thank you to Fr Peter, Fr Alfin and Fr Tru for their presence also. This week we will begin collecting our blankets for the St Vincent De Paul Winter Appeal. The Winter Appeal runs from May to August and aims to raise funds and collect donations of blankets to provide emergency relief assistance to people in need during winter. All the blankets donated will be given to St Vincent de Paul to be distributed to those most in need. Our Mini Vinnies Team for 2016 will be helping with this appeal and we thank all of those students who have volunteered. Have a great week. Today the Values Leaders presented a PBL Quiz at morning assembly. We were very impressed with the questions and responses from the students. Well done on the way everyone is working together to make sure our school is a happy and welcoming place. This week we will continue our focus on Being Respectful. We will further our knowledge of greetings. A reminder about the way we greet each other and the way we speak to each other: When greeting someone use eye contact, Use active listening - Listen to the other person and respond by asking about the other person Speak politely Wait patiently We know this will help all students to be confident participants and more aware of each other.
