District N ewsletter December MESSAGE FROM THE SUPERINTENDENT Greetings -- friends, families and staff of the SSD! This newsletter comes to you as we are immersed in the holiday season. The rains and colder weather have become much more prevalent, trees shedding their autumn leaves were a regular sight to see in the past month, and our staff and students worked hard in anticipation of a much-deserved Thanksgiving holiday break. Perhaps because it is the time of year, or maybe because I simply have been reflecting on all that I am thankful for, but whatever the reason, it?s on my mind, and now -- it?s the topic of this letter to you from me! Hopefully we approach each and every day from a place of gratitude and appreciation -- and I know sometimes (for me, anyway) the challenges and struggles I encounter can accidentally cloud those thoughts of gratitude. I have recently been reminded of how meaningful and powerful a simple, specific ?thank you? can be -- whether it?s taking the time stop a colleague in the hall, telling our students/children what we are thankful for about them, or taking just a few minutes to compose a handwritten note and sending it off in the mail. Those kind, thoughtful gestures aren?t hard to do, nor are they complex in any way -- what they ARE though, are words that the recipient(s) will not soon forget. As we enjoy the holiday season, I hope you take the opportunities to tell others in your life how grateful you are for them. I hope you are able to spend time with family and friends and that you are able to surround yourselves with the people and activities that bring you joy. Happy holidays! Heather Cordie

ELEMENTARY STUDENTS EXPLORE FUTURE CAREERS Elementary students across the District enjoyed participating in special opportunities throughout O ctober and N ovember to learn about possible future careers from the working professionals and community leaders of various occupational fields. M iddleton Elementary celebrated Career Day on O ctober 13, and was excited to offer the students a chance to hear inspirational talks by former Governor Barbara Roberts, Sherwood M ayor Krisanna Clark, and SSD Superintendent Dr. H eather Cordie, to name a few. Presentations for first graders focused on occupations in public safety (fire, police, ambulance), and second graders learned about occupations in personal health (dentist, doctor, physical therapist, nursing). O ther visitors that shared their professional stories included a clothing designer, news reporter, homemaker, and architect. Archer Glen Elementary had 74 fifth grade students attend Biz Town on O ctober 22, a program run by Junior Achievement (JA) and funded by the Sherwood Education Foundation and the elementary PACs. H opkins Elementary had 99 fifth and fourth graders that also attended Biz Town, accompanied by 30 parent volunteers. JA BizTown gives thousands of students the opportunity to run banks, manage restaurants, read utility meters, use debit cards, and even vote. Turnkey classroom materials have been created with teacher input and are provided by JA, along with teacher training and professional development opportunities. O n O ctober 31, Edy R idge Elementary hosted a T hird Grade Community Fair, which included 12 career professionals that were set up in stations that kids could visit to learn more about each job. Professions represented were firefighter, Coast Guard, N ike Product Director, school nurse, baker, pediatric dentist, performing artist, retail shop owner, and Intel engineer, to name a few. Students interacted with hands-on activities and collected souvenir "tokens" brought by guest participants to remember the profession they learned about. NATIONAL MERIT SEMIFINALISTS Sherwood School District is proud to announce that Sherwood High School seniors Caleb Lindgren, Esteban Calderon, and Dallin Dahl have each been named a National Merit Semifinalist. Esteban Calderon also was selected as a National Hispanic Scholar. Approximately 16,000 students nationwide were selected and will have the opportunity to continue in the competition for 7,400 National Merit Scholarships worth $35 million that will be awarded next spring. Semifinalists must fulfill several requirements to advance to the finalist level of the competition. About 90 percent of the Semifinalists are expected to attain the finalist standing, and about half of the finalists will win a National Merit Scholarship. Semifinalists were chosen based on qualifying test scores, academic achievement and GPA, and letters of recommendation. All Oregon schools give full scholarships to Oregon students that become National Merit Scholarship Finalists. Each of the three students were recognized and congratulated during the October 14th Board of Directors meeting, where Sherwood High School Principal Ken Bell shared the students' achievements with the Board members and public attendees.

STAKEHOLDER MEETING WITH THE BOARD OF DIRECTORS Over the last several months, the Sherwood School District Board of Directors and staff have been analyzing the capacity challenges in our schools. The high school is beyond capacity. Our elementary schools, despite adjustments to our boundaries to balance enrollment, are near capacity. Class sizes and offerings, as well as the overall education experience, are impacted when schools are operating beyond capacity. The Board has engaged in a dialogue about potential solutions to these capacity challenges. No decisions have been made as of yet, but we have arrived at a point in the discussions where the input of others is important to the continued process of identifying solutions. On November 19, 2015, the Board of Directors held a Stakeholder Meeting/Special Work Session at Archer Glen Elementary School, where 17 community members attended to hear presentations from various staff regarding potential investment strategies should the Sherwood School District pass a bond measure in the future. In addition to learning more about the bond history of the District and what financing and taxation implications are involved with a bond, participants received a very broad overview of ideas that have been discussed by the Board as possible ways to approach current and future capacity needs. Some of the topics discussed included: expansion versus new construction at various school sites, facility maintenance/retrofit and seismic upgrades, long-range curriculum and technology plans, bus replacement, and high school expansion options. A unique element of the Stakeholder Meeting was the inclusion of a polling app - a "live" polling tool - which allowed staff to pose questions to the audience related to each topic that allowed them to use a smartphone or wifi device to "vote" and share their opinions and preferences on the concepts and proposals presented, and those responses were displayed instantly for the group. The Stakeholder Meeting was one of many opportunities that the District will hold for staff, parents and community members to offer their feedback and ask questions. We will continue to share news with our readers about those opportunities and the steps toward a bond measure that the Sherwood School District may be taking in the coming year.

SUPERINTENDENT JOB SHADOW: TRANSPORTATION At the staff Back to School Rally in 2014, Superintendent Heather Cordie reminded staff how important relationships are, especially learning about one another' s stories. She shared that to get to know staff better, she w ould devote one day a month to spending a shift w ith staff and their w ork teams, and she did so throughout the 2014-15. Job shadow ing is not about simply observing w ork being done but, rather, getting into the trenches to help w ith w ork tasks w hile learning about each critical role and the job responsibilities of each employee group, and for Supt. Cordie to get the opportunity to learn the personal stories of individual staff members across the District. This year, w ith a new Strategic Plan in place, and one of its focus areas concentrated on building a positive culture, Superintendent Cordie w as excited to continue the job shadow program. On November 20, Superintendent Cordie spent a shift w ith staff in the Transportation Department. This w as the first job shadow of the 2015-16 school year. She started early w ith Kristy Kalina, completing a Pre-Trip School Bus Safety Inspection before the morning run to pick-up students. Upon her return to the Bus Barn, she spent time alongside Tammy Edginton and Kris Spencer w ho taught Supt. Cordie all about routing and dispatching. She then ventured out again for another bus run w ith Bruce M aplethorpe, w ho has been driving in Sherw ood School District for 43 years! The Hopkins 4-year-olds on that run shared w ith Supt. Cordie w hat they learned about that day - the letter ' G' , and the accompanying "G-g-g-gopher Song." Thank you to all members of the Transportation Department for their w arm w elcome and eagerness to share their w ork w ith Superintendent Cordie!
