Page 2 brave. He was one with the “big cats” and Toots and her brood never tired of seeing him each year. In the year 1990, it was announced that it was Gunther’s last year - he had decided to retire. Toots took the news hard and planned on seeing the circus at least a couple of times that year. But once again, life got in the way. Toots had passes for only select days and each weekend something seemed to come up and the Toots’ family was unable to get to the circus. The last night of the circus quickly approached and after this night there would be no more Gunther. So Toots gathered the children and ran for the bus stop. Wouldn’t you know that the bus was off schedule? Toots and kids wait and wait and no bus. Pleassssssssssse come! Long story short (thanks Madame Editor for re-

minding me again) the bus finally comes and we arrive with about 15 minutes of the show left. They didn’t want to leave us in, but when they saw the stark desperation on our faces, they took pity. And remember, our tickets were not really valid. We ran in and who did we bump (literally) into? Yes, it was The Gunther on the main floor. Our lives are complete. We gush over him so, he thought about calling security. Ah ha, life is good. Just need me some more good ass memories, thank you very much. Those were the days, my friends... Yes, yes, yes! My lesson of the week, Ol’ Madame Editor, is Do Not procrastinate. And this comes straight from the mouth of Ms. Procrastination herself. And... Gunther, I miss you!!! ‘til next week... Toots Malone

Homeowners and businesses who suffered flood damage due to the extremely heavy rains in the area should be aware so that they do not become victims of unscrupulous contractors.  There are a number of things that should be taken into consideration if your home or business has been damaged due to the rains. The first step is to immediately contact your insurance agent to file a claim. For flood damage clean-up follow these tips: Where possible, take photos of any water saturation. An insurance adjuster may need to see what’s been damaged in order to process your claim. According to the U.S. Federal Emergency

Management Agency (FEMA), as soon as the majority of water is drained away, all wet items should be discarded or cleaned and thoroughly dried within 48 hours of flooding to prevent the growth of mold. Do research - contact the BBB before you hire a contractor and avoid businesses who come to your door with a good deal. Request bids from three or four different companies. Base all bids on the same criteria. Don’t automatically pick the lowest bid. Do not give into demands to make excessively large down payments. And don’t make full payment until all the work is done to your satisfaction. Determine whether the contractor has the proper

Lend Me Your Ear... Toots is all disequilibriated lately (wow, is this a word?). Can’t seem to get back on the big old train track of life. And me thinks Madame Editor is on to me. It seems that fond memories flood my dim brain of late. Too much stuff going on in the real world - so I shall retreat to yesteryear. You know, something like time travel. Now, this may be a slight medical condition, of the mental variety, perhaps? Thinking of Gunther - wahoo! Every year, I would take my tribe of four, via CTA bus, to enjoy the magic and the mystery of the circus. Toots would then dream of the day that she could run away with the circus. She could be the apprentice of the great (GREAT) Gunther Gebel-Williams. Remember him? The charismatic blond ‘King of the Jungle’? The great lion tamer, braver than

Labor Day

by Cleatus (Cherokee Lee) Murdaugh Are you getting ready for Labor Day? There is going to be a parade If you could get out there real early You may just sit in the shade. Now it just might be a bigger one Than what they had last year And if I can remember correctly It started off with a big cheer.

My name is Magic and I’m pleased to meet you. I am presently looking for a home. Let me begin by telling you my story. I’ve been staying with this really nice family for the last few months and they’ve been taking great care of me but... I don’t get along very well with their other pets. I am just trying to tell them that I need a home all to myself. My foster mom has tried to work with me and introduce me to the other cats in the house, but I don’t play well with others. They are nice enough felines, but not my cup of tea. Sorry. I am really a very loving cat - but I like the humans better than the other

But first came the marching band With the drums up in front Next was the dressed up clowns Each with a different stunt.

Name: I have many names. Joe, Mike, Greg, Alfonzo, Pat, Susan, Jorge, Jenny, Larry, Margaret and on and on. I am the American worker. I am what Labor Day is all about. Personal Stats: I am single, married, engaged, alone, living with family. I am from every walk of life and every kind of financial background. What Do You Do For A Living? I am a construction worker, a teacher, an editor, a sales manager, a cable guy, a police officer, a train engineer, a hospital worker, an animal rescuer. If the job needs to be done, I will get it done. How, Or Why Did You Choose Your Career? I chose my career out of passion or necessity. Sometimes luck will choose my career path. In some cases, I have had many different jobs and careers and sometimes I look forward to even more. One Of The Biggest Events in Your Life? The biggest events in my life of course are usually family related - marriages, births, family accomplishments. Another big event is the completion of a task and knowing it’s a job to be proud of. The Best Advice That You Ever Received? The best advice that I ever received is that no job, no matter how menial it may seem is less important than another. Always put your best foot forward and do a job you will be proud of. Most Unusual Things That Ever Happened? One of the most unusual occurrences is being laid off or finding myself without a job to do. There is a sense of pride and normality that goes with a day’s work. There are families to be supported. When Are You The Happiest? I am the happiest at the end of the day, knowing that I have done my job to the best of my abilities. What a sense of satisfaction and accomplishment! Who, Or What Is Your Inspiration? My inspiration is every man and woman who gets up early or heads out late to get their job done. Every person who contributes their skills and hard work to this great country. Any Advice For The Youth Of Today? My advice to the youth of today is to work hard to reach all of your goals but always take time to smell the proverbial roses. Anything Else To Add? I hope that everyone enjoys a wonderful relaxing Labor Day. I am proud to be an American worker and grateful for a day of well deserved rest. Also, thank you to the sponsors of the Labor Day ads. Without you, the annual Labor Day messages would not be possible. Hopefully this time next year, the economy will be back on track and everyone will be employed in a job that they love. But in the meantime, value the one you have right now. There are many, many people that have no job at all and no means in which to support themselves.

animals. Sorry guys! So here is my resume: I love to climb high up so I can see everything. My foster mom has this great cabinet near a window and I spend my days laying on top of it watching everything that goes on outside. When I’m not watching the comings and goings of the neighbors, I sleep curled up on the pillows in the room listening to the radio, which I can turn on myself. Did I mention that I am quite smart? And handsome?? I’m really good at using my scratching post and litter box and all my shots are up to date. I am one healthy guy. My foster family says I’m very affectionate and my foster mom calls me her “pretty little boy”. I love to sit in her lap and bump her with my head if she forgets to pet me enough. Did I mention that I am full of personality? My family will agree. If I sound like someone you might want to meet, call Sue at 773-229-1900.

This year they’ll have the dancers Much like the year before But this time they’re wearing hats Hair won’t blow any more All of their floats were so beautiful As they were going through The street had been cleaned earlier Just the way they always do The balancing act should be coming They are usually at the rear And the higher up they can jump The louder they will cheer. Take a pen and write this date down Just so you’ll remember It’s six days before Grandparents Day The first of September.

Ald. Zalewski attends West Elsdon block party

Music Corner by Ken Qualter They say that Richard Cory owns one half of this whole town. With political connections to spread his wealth around. Born into society, a banker’s only child, he had everything a man could want: power, grace, and style. But me, I work in his factory. And I curse the life I’m living, And I curse my poverty, And I wish that I could be, Oh I wish that I could be, Oh I wish that I could be, Richard Cory. The papers print his picture almost everywhere he goes: Richard Cory at the opera, Richard Cory at a show. And the rumor of his parties and the orgies on his yacht! Oh, he surely must be happy with everything he’s got. He freely gave to charity, he had the common touch. They were grate-

So my mind was filled with wonder when the evening headlines read: “Richard Cory went home last night and put a bullet through his head.” Paul Simon – 1966 We’re all prone to gossip to one extent or another. You watch their TV shows, their movies, see them on the talk shows, read interviews. You feel like you know them. You admire them. You think they’ve got it made. Wealth. A beautiful wife. A great job. Awards for their work and accomplishments. But hey, even those closest to him don’t know what it’s like to be him

Prayer to the Blessed Virgin

(Never known to fail) Oh, most beautiful flower of Mt. Carmel, fruitful vine, splendor of Heaven, Blessed Mother of the Son of God, Immaculate Virgin, assist me in my necessity. Oh, Star of the Sea, help me and show me, herein you are my mother. Oh, Holy Mary, Mother of God, Queen of Heaven and Earth! I humbly beseech you from the bottom of my heart to succor me in this necessity. There are none that can withstand your power. Oh show me herein you are my mother. Oh Mary, conceived without sin, pray for us who have recourse to thee (3x). Holy Mother, I place this cause in your hands (3x). Holy Spirit, you who solve all problems, light of all roads so that I can attain my goal. You who gave me the divine gift to forgive and forget all evil against me and that in all instances in my life you are with me. I want in this short prayer to thank you for all things as you confirm once again that I never want to be separated from you in Eternal Glory. Thank you for your mercy toward me and mine. The person must say this prayer 3 consecutive days. After 3 days, the request will be granted. This prayer must be published after the favor

is granted.

and live his life. I feel a deep sadness when I think of the death of Robin Williams. He had a talent that made millions of people laugh. And cry, in some of his movie roles. And now I see his photo on the tabloids with horrendous stories. True or not, they don’t need to be told. And I’ve heard some horribly nasty “jokes” and comments. If these soulless people had a small fraction of Robin Williams kindness and generosity of spirit they might someday qualify as real human beings. I thought of the song “Richard Cory” when I heard the news. And another early 60’s song, “Walk A Mile In Another Man’s Shoes”. Instead of making assumptions and gossiping about each other, we could make this world a better place if we simply treated each other with more kindness and compassion. Rest In Peace, Robin. Paw Prints by Ed Kostro Last week in Part I, we discussed ‘Kill’ Shelters. A ‘No-Kill’ Shelter generally means that this type of animal shelter will not euthanize any animals in their care, unless these animals are deemed to be unadoptable, or unless these animals have illnesses from which they cannot recover. And unlike ‘Open Admissions’ or ‘Kill’ Shelters, most ‘NoKill’ Animal Shelters are much smaller in size; they are operated mostly by volunteers instead of by paid employees; and they are not required to accept every animal that they are asked to take in. Back in 2005, when Hurricane Katrina struck the Gulf Coast, and we launched the largest Pet Rescue Operation in American history, our economy was still in fairly good shape, and most of the animal shelters in America were not yet overflowing with relinquished pets. This allowed us to send thousands of rescued Katrina pets to ‘No-Kill’ animal shelters all over America, who compassionately agreed to accept these left behind pets and to find them new homes. Very sadly today, this is not the case; both ‘Kill’ and ‘No-Kill’ Shelters are now all over-flowing with both dogs and cats that are in dire need of new homes. The total annual incomes of ‘No-Kill’ Shelters are also usually much less than ‘Open Admissions’ Shelters because most ‘No-Kill’ Shelters are funded primarily through Donations – unlike Chicago Animal Care and Control (CACC) and The Animal Welfare League (AWL), these ‘No-Kill’ shelters receive no city, suburban, or county funding. The Animal Welfare League’s reported 2012 Income was $5.9 Million, and much of this income came from Cook County and from numerous suburban municipalities, which all have yearly contracts with AWL to accept every animal brought to them by the county or by these con-

tracted suburbs. In comparison, P.A.W.S. (People’s Animal Welfare Society) of Tinley Park-a small ‘No-Kill’ Shelter in our area, reported an annual income of only $745,000 in 2012. Yet, I was overjoyed recently when this ‘No-Kill’ Shelter agreed to taken in a homeless dog and her nine newborn puppies that we finally managed to rescue from an abandoned house in Posen. This poor dog has been homeless for over three long years, and none of us involved in her rescue wanted her to be shipped off to one of the ‘Kill’ Shelters. But very sadly, we also recently learned of a woman living in Chicago who drove her own four dogs out to a forest preserve and abandoned them there. She could no longer afford to care for them, and perhaps she did not want to take them to a ‘Kill’ Shelter, and the ‘No-Kill’ Shelters that she contacted were all full - but abandoning pets on the mean city streets or in the forest preserves is definitely not a solution. Most pets today lack the necessary hunting skills to survive out on their own, and abandoning them to fend for themselves often sadly leads to their slow painful deaths from starvation and disease. The important thing to remember if you ever have to relinquish your own pet, or if you find a lost or abandoned pet out on the streets is to take the time to determine what the pet euthanasia policies are at the animal shelter you are considering taking it to. Are they a ‘Kill’ or a ‘No-Kill’ Shelter? And since both types of shelters today are already overflowing with both dogs and cats in dire need of new homes, what are the chances that the pet that you bring to a shelter will be adopted out to a loving new home? Also please consider fostering a lost or abandoned pet yourself, until either its family can be found, or until someone is found who is willing to adopt the pet and provide

it with the loving new home that every pet in America today truly deserves. To check for lost pets, or to adopt, go to Animal Care and Control, located at 2741 South Western, 312-747-1406; or Animal Welfare, which is located at 10305 Southwest Highway, 708-636-8586 or at 6224 South Wabash Avenue, 773-667-0088 or the Anti-Cruelty Society (for adoptions only, they do not take in strays) at 510 N. LaSalle Street, 312-644-8338. There are many animals waiting and hoping for a forever home. They don’t have long because these are KILL shelters. Animals are killed (euthanized) due to the high volume of animals being dumped at shelters. DON”T EVER ASSUME A SHELTER IS NO KILL. Most aren’t! If your pet gets lost-GO TO the shelters everyday and check. Don’t take the chance that your pet may be euthanized (killed) because no one came to claim them. Don’t Give Up Looking For Your Pet. Go Door To Door! Put Up Posters. Call Your Local Police Station (Not 911). Keep Looking – They Would!!!! Until Next Time - Please Be Kind To Aninmals, And Please Consider Saving A Life, By Either Fostering Or Adopting A Homeless Pet - There Are So Many Of Them In Dire Need Of Our Help Today. Illinois state agencies are supporting communities affected by flooding caused by heavy rainfall over the weekend in the Chicago area and stand ready to provide additional assistance as needed to help local officials address public safety concerns. “We are in close contact with local officials and prepared to provide any assistance needed to help local officials deal with impacts from overnight flash flooding,” said Jonathon Monken, director of the IL. Emergency Management Agency (IEMA). Regional staff from IEMA are working closely with local emergency managers in Chicago, Cook County, and other flood-impacted counties to determine if they need any state resources to help with public safety issues. So far, no state assistance has been requested.   “I, along with Chicago Aldermen Zalewski and Quinn, want to ensure that the working families and seniors of the Garfield Ridge and Clearing neighborhoods of Chicago, and the City of Burbank receive the assistance and resources from local and State agencies as a result

of the recent flooding events,” said Sandoval. The Illinois Department of Natural Resources Division of Water Resources is closely monitoring river and stream levels in the impacted area and providing regular updates to IEMA. The Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT) worked throughout the night to ensure that any standing water receded as quickly as possible from area expressways and arterial streets so cleanup efforts could begin immediately to minimize the impact to the morning commute. A preliminary inspection of a section of Interstate 290 in the western suburbs that was closed due to flooding determined that torrential rains in a short period of time caused flash flooding throughout the immediate area, overwhelming the expressway’s drainage systems. The department will be conducting additional inspections in the coming days, as it normally does after similar flooding episodes, to ensure that all of the appropriate drainage systems

are working as designed. Safety is the top priority at IDOT and personnel will be closely monitoring the weather and road conditions throughout the weekend. The Illinois Environmental Protection Agency (IEPA) has been working with the Metropolitan Water Reclamation District (MWRD) to help communities finalize their inflow/infiltration ordinance which will address flooding problems in the future. In November 2013, IEPA awarded $15 million to MWRD to continue work on completing a deep tunnel under their Tunnel and Reservoir Plan and will be adding an additional $10 million in the next couple of months for the deep tunnel. They will be planning for stormwater projects for these communities. IEPA will continue to work with MWRD as the situation continues. Illinois State Police are working with state agencies to monitor weather and road conditions.  State police advise motorists to use discretion before driving in affected areas to avoid unsafe conditions. People whose homes have been affected by flash flooding, should contact their local emergency management agency. Call 312-603-8180 for Cook County; please call 630-682-7925 for DuPage County; and you are asked to call 312-746-9266 or 312-744-5000 (3-1-1) for the Chicago area.
