Six Queen of Peace students along with two chaperones went to Nazareth Farm for one week to lend a helping hand. Those students were seniors Natalie Chraca, Gianna Formica, and Marissa Villalobos and juniors Maria Blanas, Erica Gens and Claire Murphy. Nazareth Farm is a Catholic community in rural West Virginia that transforms lives through a service-retreat experience. They are devoted to living out the Gospel message through the cornerstones of community, simplicity, prayer and service. While

there, the girls helped with home repair in the surrounding community. Gardening work done directly on the farm was a big portion of their work. One group of people each day was the home crew. That group was responsible for breakfast, lunch and dinner for the day as well as chores around the house and farm. Most of the ingredients for meals are provided directly from the farm gardens. Every Tuesday is community night. The farm welcomes the community for dinner to cook and pray

with them which the girls said they really enjoyed. Queen of Peace continues to keep this a yearly trip as the impact it has on everyone who attends is incredible. Queen of Peace High School is located at 7659 S. Linder Ave. in Burbank, IL. To learn more about Queen of Peace please visit www.queenofpeacehs. org. Left to right: Marissa Villalobos, Erica Gens, Claire Murphy, Maria Blanas, Gianna Formica, Natalie Chraca, Chaperone Ashley Dick, and Counselor Heather Saylor.

The Garfield Ridge Chamber of Commerce is taking a new approach to eradicate the stigma of empty storefronts along Archer Avenue. The chamber has introduced its ‘Pop Up Art Gallery’. Members have been able to set up ‘Pop Up Art Galleries’ at three

separate locations, with the artwork provided by students at Kennedy High School. Current locations to check out are at 5910 S. Archer, 6950 W. Archer, and 7110 W. Archer. Chamber officials have said that there are about 17 vacant storefronts on

Archer Avenue from Cicero to Harlem Avenues. Owners of vacant store fronts can participate by contacting the Garfield Ridge Chamber at 773-767-0014 or [email protected] The art gallery pictured above is located at 7110 W. Archer Avenue.

Lend Me Your Ear...

Toots here. Greetings and salutations to all of you. Have you noticed the diminished space that Madame Editor has given to me for this week’s message. Doesn’t look good. Is she trying to tell me something? Me thinks we should start the picket lines now. Toots has been experiencing a state of upheaval these past several weeks and she ain’t liking it. Lots of new projects in the works - if everyone would cooperate, we would survive. Yes, it’s the new and improve, the reinvention of the Toots. I do that quite often - hate the thought of being predictable. Must always keep them guessing. Toots has people running around like chickens with their heads cut off. And to be honest, there might actually be some beheading. Say it ain’t so, Toots!

Toots herself is (so she thinks) the master list maker. I figure that if its on paper, it is as good as done. The joy of crossing an item off is almost too much to bear. The onlookers seem to be keeping everything to a dull roar, because they all realize that Toots is one straw short of the broken back. Maybe a half straw. Did have a rather commotion-filled weekend, but that is a story for another time. Would probably take up a couple of pages and you can see that Madame Editor is not liking me. Plus, the story itself is so bizarre, you would probably not even believe it. Toots was heard to cry, “Bring lawyers, guns and money!” Toots has the bad gene of finding weird episodes of extreme confusion, agitation, or commotion (and possibly dangerous things) funny - things that

Garfield Ridge Civic League says “Get Involved” normal people are horrified over. But this little episode of this weekend is something that even Toots is not laughing about. It will definitely take some time to find this episode even slightly amusing. But all is well that ends well. And that is all that Toots asks for. See, I am trying to lead up to the ‘lesson’ of the week. Madame Editor’s mandate. It appears that is all that she wants anymore (look at the little space). She has been heard to say that she is personally tired of the insane drivel spewed in this very column. Let’s keep ‘Old Benevolent One’ happy, shall we? Okay, lesson of the week. Look before you leap, means think carefully about the possible results or consequences before doing something. And if you have already leapt, straighten yourself up and take that leap backwards to where you were. Toots has been known to say, “Why weren’t you smart over there?” Meaning, why didn’t you think before you acted. More next week - maybe even the ‘episode’. Let me live in peace and harmony. ‘til next week... Toots Malone

The Garfield Ridge Civic League once again participated in the annual Patriot’s Day Parade held on Tuesday, July 1. The Civic League distributed candy to excited children along the route. “We are always excited to be in the parade,” said Civic League President Rick Techman. “We were delighted to see so many of our neighbors viewing the parade, and we loved giving out treats to all the kids. I know that our group will be walking again in the fall at the Pumpkin Parade.” Pictured left to right assembling before the parade kickoff are: Noah Flores, GRCL President Rick Techman, member Millie Saponur, and Myles Flores. All are residents of the Garfield Ridge community.

The NewsHound pledges to promote the children of the communities it serves.

Personal Stats: I have been married for almost three years. What Do You Do For A Living? I am the Executive Director of the Maria Kaupas Center (MKC). The MKC, located at 2740 W. 68th Street, is a faith-based, mission driven community center serving the youth and adults. How, Or Why, Did You Choose Your Career? I enjoy helping others and during high school, I knew that the career that I chose was going to be one where I could use my skills and life experience to truly make a difference in the community. Throughout my career, I have worked at a variety of not for profits. My goals have been to work with youth and to work at a job where I am passionate about the mission of the organization. While in college and after graduation, I mentored several students through the Daniel Murphy Scholarship Foundation and HFS Chicago Scholars. Also, while in college I helped youth find summer jobs through Mayor Daley’s Kidstart Summer Youth Corporate Initiative. I truly enjoy helping youth become successful in life. The Best Advice That You Ever Received? Growing up my Mother would give me many words of encouragement. She would always say, “Never give up no matter how difficult things may seem.” My Mother also advised me to work hard and always try my best in everything that I do. Who, Or What, Is Your Inspiration? Supreme Court Justice Sonia Sotomayor is my inspiration. I had the privilege of seeing her speak at book signing a few years ago. I truly admire her and all of her accomplishments. Any Advice For The Youth Of Today? My advice to youth today is to get involved with extra-curricular activities and community service projects. Giving back to the community will help you become a well-rounded person and you will feel like you have made a difference. Anything Else To Add? I feel blessed to work at the Maria Kaupas Center (MKC) and it is truly rewarding to make a difference in the lives of others. St. Richard Preschool graduation

Music Corner by Ken Qualter This summer I have had the great joy of giving guitar lessons to my 17-yearold grand-daughter, Victoria. She’s a great kidsmart, curious, fun, with a deep love of music and a lot of potential. I’ve had the opportunity to turn her on to a lot of music she’s never heard before. And she’s turned me on to a few things. There is one thing that drives me crazy, though. We’ll be listening to music and she will constantly be playing with her cell phone. Music is about concentration and focus. Music can improve your ability to concentrate. All great musicians have the ability to listen and focus at a very deep level. Today’s society is all about multi-tasking. Doing several things at once.

Focus!

People think that this is productive. I have doubted that for some time. The latest research is confirming my view that multitasking is counter-productive and diminishes the ability to concentrate. Buddhists are taught to focus completely on a single task, paying attention to the tiniest detail. The goal is to complete the task perfectly, no matter how mundane, and find an inner peace and joy in doing so. And then move on to the next task. In meditation the goal is to silence the non-stop chatter that goes on in our minds. This requires great focus. Even in the Christian tradition of prayer there are stories of saints who had transcendent spiritual experiences while praying. Trust me,

they weren’t multi-tasking or texting while praying! In my interview with pianist extraordinaire Chuck Leavell a few years ago, what struck me the most was how he told me that at various points in his life he learned to listen on a deeper level. That skill, in combination with his great talent, is why he gets to play with the Rolling Stones, Eric Clapton, The Allman Brothers, George Harrison, Aretha Franklin, and scores of the world’s greatest musicians. People! Music lovers! Quit the multi-tasking! Focus! You will reap benefits that will enhance every facet of your life! If you have questions/comments: You can reach Ken at: [email protected] or www.KenQualter.com

Gov. Quinn signs bill to expand access to medical marijuana in Illinois

Illinois Gov. Pat Quinn signed a bill into law recently that will expand access to the state’s medical marijuana program. SB 2636, sponsored by Sen. Iris Martinez (DChicago), expands the qualifying conditions of the program to include

seizure disorders, such as epilepsy and those associated with brain injuries. Illinois is now one of 23 states with workable medical marijuana programs that allow the use of medical marijuana in the treatment of seizure disorders.

SB 2636 will allow the health department to develop rules so that minors may participate in the Illinois Medical Cannabis Pilot Program if they receive parental consent in addition to recommendations from their physicians.

Howard, a 58-year-old special education case manager at Gwendolyn Brooks College Prep, was killed by gunfire on May 29, 2014, while working a second job as a realtor in the Chatham community. Law enforcement authorities allege the gunman was aiming at a rival

who was driving by in a car when a stray bullet ripped through a wall of the real estate office and struck Betty Howard in the chest as she sat at her desk. Two other innocent victims were injured by the spray of bullets.  Bradley, the founder of United in Peace, and Andrew Holmes, an antiviolence activist, urged the community to assist in finding the individual responsible for her death. The two activists circulated flyers bearing the name and photograph of Dominque Hodrick, 23, proclaiming him a “person of interest” in the case. On June 12th, Hodrick was charged with the crime and denied bond.

St. Daniel’s Summer Day Camp program

Crime Report Courtesy of swchicagopost.com by Dan O’Bookum Editor’s note: We present this police blotter news as a public service, courtesy of our friends at swchicagopost.com. May all of us also remember that a person charged with a crime is presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law. *** Burglars broke into the Chuangyi Metals warehouse, 3939 S. Karlov, and stole a forklift valued at $15,000 and a front loader valued at $20,000. The crime occurred at about 8:20 p.m. Wednesday, July 23. A short time later, the same burglars used the forklift to steal six pallets of boxed pedestal fans from a warehouse at 4500 W. 47th St., according to a police incident report. In all, 384 fans were stolen, with a total value of $10,000. The criminals gained access to the warehouse by smashing their way through a loading dock door. Police were reviewing surveillance video. *** A 34-year-old woman was stabbed by a robber in the backyard of her home near 50th and Kenneth. The victim told police that she saw a man sitting in her yard at about 4:30 p.m. Tuesday, July 22. He reportedly stabbed her with a switchblade knife as he

demanded that she surrender her purse. He fled on foot, and the victim was transported by ambulance to Christ Hospital, where she was listed in stable condition. She described the attacker as a Hispanic man age 3545, 5’6 to 5’7, medium complexion, wearing a black baseball cap and dark blue shorts. *** A would-be robber tried but failed to steal any money from two clerks at Family Dollar, 5016 S. Cicero. According to the 29-year-old store manager, the offender handed a note to a clerk at about 1:30 p.m. Sunday, July 20, demanding cash. The clerk passed the note to the manager, who immediately kicked a safe door closed. The robber fled the store, running through the parking lot and the west on 50th Street. He is described as a black man age 28-33, 6’1 to 6’3 and 220-240 pounds, brown eyes, dark complexion, black braided hair, wearing a black baseball cap, gray t-shirt and blue jeans. *** A 21-year-old West Lawn man said by police to be an admitted gang member was arrested and charged with burglary and criminal trespass to land, after he

allegedly was seen rummaging through a car near 62nd and Keating. Arthur R. Beristain of 62nd and Kilpatrick was apprehended by police after a foot chase at 3:57 a.m. Wednesday, July 23. Bond was set at $30,000, and Beristain was scheduled to appear in Cook County Circuit Court Branch 48, 155 W. 51st Street, on July 30. *** A 62-year-old Archer Heights man told police he was robbed at gunpoint as he walked down a sidewalk in front of 4854 S. Karlov at 10:30 p.m. Wednesday, July 23. Stolen was the victim’s brown leather shoulder bag, which contained a wallet, cell phone, credit cards, driver’s license and $50 cash. The robber is described as a Hispanic man age 20-22, 5’6 and 170 pounds, light complexion. *** Burglars forced open the front window of a home near 51st and Hamlin and stole a video game console, four gold chains, a tiffany necklace, and $280 cash. The crime was discovered by the victim, a 34-year-old man, when he came home from work at 6:30 p.m. on July 24. Want to read more Southwest Side crime news? Visit swchicagopost.com!

America’s Homeless Pets Need Your Help, Right Now

St. Laurence faculty/staff beautify campus

by Ed Kostro

A homeless Pit Bull and a tiny injured Chihuahua Found wandering a Savannah, Georgia street together The Pit Bull actually carrying her tiny friend, in her mouth Now searching for help, in the brutally hot summer weather   Periodically, the large dog places her injured friend on the ground And now licks his wounds, attempting to ease the pain of her friend The tiny Chihuahua, suffering from an extremely nasty eye infection Their tremendous bond of friendship never wavering, without an end   The Animal Control Division eventually rescues these two homeless friends The little Chihuahua’s eye has to be amputated; it is now sadly beyond repair The story of these two inseparable canines soon receives a lot of media attention Offers to adopt these two homeless dogs now pour in from just about everywhere   As a pet rescuer myself, I’m elated that these two dogs are being adopted together But I also find it extremely sad that people want them because they were on T.V. St. Laurence faculty and staff have been hard at work this summer improving the There are thousands of homeless waifs just like them, all across our vast nation campus with a new garden and landscaping. St. Laurence is located at 5556 W. Languishing in shelters, and no one wants them; which is so damned sad to me 77th St. in Burbank. For information on St. Laurence, visit www.stlaurence.com.   Two years ago, we rescued a terrified little waif running down a busy highway His story also received national news coverage, and offers of adoption poured in When I told the 300 people wanting to adopt now famous ‘Rags’ to go to a shelter Many of them got extremely upset with me, even prompting some Hate Mail to begin Show Support 6435 W. Dear Editor, Too often many of us, me included, complain when things do not go correctly or the way we would like to see them happen. On the other side of the coin, when things go well or someone does something nice, we take that for granted. I would like to compliment and thank one of our local businesses for what he and his staff have been doing for at least the last 15 years or more. Did you get up on the 4th of July and see the beautiful display of American flags on your block? I did, and I am proud to say that I have been helping putting them out for many years. Congratulations to Joe Niego and his firm, Niego Realty for continuing to take pride in America, his community and his business. It has been stated that imitation is the sincerest form of flattery and success. Several other businesses are now copying the Niego Realty initiative and I applaud them! To paraphrase a fairly well known statement; “Joe did it again!” Thanks from the Garfield Ridge residents. Tom Bondi

Educate yourself about student loan programs to avoid scams The excitement and promise of attending college and getting a degree too often turn into heartache and regret for students, parents or others involved in the application and payment process when they are not careful to avoid financial aid traps and outright scams. “The key to not being caught up in a financial aid scam is to check up on any offers and the companies offering them before signing any documents,” explains Steve J. Bernas, president and CEO of the Better Business Bureau serving Chicago and Northern Illinois.  “We applaud the work of Illinois Attorney General Lisa Madigan,” stated Steve Bernas, “in filing lawsuits against debt settlement firms that allegedly engaged in deceptive marketing practices and illegally charging the consumers hundreds of dollars in upfront fees to reduce or eliminate their student loan debt burden. All this for services that Attorney General Lisa Madigan rightly said student loan borrowers can obtain themselves through some government programs at no cost.” The Chicago BBB has received multiple complaints for a credit-debt

consolidation company that is based in Carrolton, Texas. The company name is Broadsword Student Advantage, LLC. It has a BBB rating of an F and has 52 complaints in the last 12 months. In addition to this company, Madigan also filed a lawsuit against the Chicago-based credit-debt consolidation company, First American Tax Defense LLC. Chicago resident, Evangeline Allen, was one of the victims of Broadsword Student Advantage, LLC. She says, “They promised that they could help me. I could tell right away that they were not going to get me anywhere with this and I asked for a refund. I was supposed to keep paying them monthly for the duration of the loan. They kept promising a refund and it kept taking longer and longer. They gave me dates and never stuck to them. They even started to get rude and nasty. They finally refunded my money after I contacted the Better Business Bureau.” Bernas noted that whenever people are interested in applying for any type of loan they need to do Recipe first. some homework He stressed the imporof the tance for people to avoid problems andWeek scams up front, rather than getting trapped, then regretting and filing a complaint

later.   “It is always a good idea to look up the rating and read of the Business Review on the BBB website about any company you’re looking to do business with,” said Bernas.  “This is especially true when dealing with loan firms, which have specific laws governing their operation.  Information and links to this information are available on the BBB.org website.” In general, the BBB recommends the following tips to avoid financial aid and loan scams: Do not pay advance fees. In Illinois it is illegal for debt relief companies to charge upfront fees before providing services. There are no “special” deals. Debt relief companies do not have the ability to negotiate with your

Commemorating the 70th anniversary of the Warsaw uprising

creditors in order to obtain a “special deal” under these federal student loan programs. Look out for high-pressure tactics. Beware of companies that pressure you into a plan or make any guarantees without looking into your specific needs. Always check it out first. Research the company and the services it offers. ing resistance movements of World War II against impossible odds. “During the 63 day resistance, approximately 250,000 Poles were killed, wounded, or went missing.  In response to the uprising, Hitler sought to make an example out of Warsaw, and ordered a bombing campaign that led to the destruction of 85 percent of this historic city as punishment.  “Warsaw is now a beautiful and vibrant city, and Poland is a free and democratic society that still respects and reflects upon the efforts of the freedom fighters of the Warsaw Uprising.  This resolution honors the sacrifices of those men and women who refused to capitulate to the Nazi regime, and who deserve our admiration and commemoration as well.  The contribution these brave folks made to the Allied War effort will never be forgotten.”

Secretary of State and State Librarian Jesse White awarded $1,526,542 in Talking Book Center (TBC) grants. The three library systems-Illinois Heartland, Reaching Across Illinois and Chicago Public Library-together with the Illinois State Library, provide talking book and braille services for Illinois residents. TBC grants support the services of the library systems. “Talking books offer a wonderful opportunity for anyone who cannot use regular print materials due to blindness, visual impairment or physical disability,” said White. The Talking Book and Braille Service (TBBS) supports the activities of the Illinois Network of Libraries Serving the Blind and Physically Handicapped in providing public library service to any Illinois resident who is unable to read standard print material due to a permanent or temporary visual or physical disability. The four customer service sites are the Regional Library in Springfield, the Chicago Public Library Talking Book Center at the Harold Washington Library Center, the Illinois Talking Book Advisory and Outreach Center in Burr Ridge and the Illinois Machine Sub-Lending Agency in DuQuoin. All sites strive to enrich the quality of life for eligible Illinois residents. The Regional Library acts as the liaison with the National Library Service for the Blind and Physically Handicapped and circulates books to all residents enrolled in TBBS.
