Northwestern College Criminal Justice Dept. teams up with Sergeant at Bridgeview Police Dept.

Northwestern College’s Criminal Justice Department has partnered with Sergeant Carl Michalski of the Bridgeview Police Department who will speak to its Juvenile Justice classes on three separate visits as the classes move through their Summer Quarter curriculum. This is the first multi-presentation initiative on a single law enforcement topic for Northwestern College and the Bridgeview Police Department, although law enforcement officers from numerous local, state and federal agencies frequently come out to speak to classes as special guest speakers

throughout the year. In early July Sergeant Michalski addressed the Juvenile Justice classes during the second week of the Summer Quarter curriculum. He will return during weeks five and seven of the Quarter to speak to the same classes of students, with his presentations intensifying as the class explores and becomes more proficient with juvenile justice issues. “The instructors for all of Northwestern College’s Criminal Justice Program courses are active or retired law enforcement officers, bringing real-life experiences to our classrooms,” said Joseph Pecko, Program Director of the College’s School of Legal Studies. He explained that criminal justice students are afforded multiple opportunities throughout their program to hear veteran and active law enforce-

ment officers provide them with specialized knowledge in various aspects of their jobs.  Former Bridgeview Police Chief Charles Chigas, a Northwestern College Criminal Justice instructor, facilitated Sergeant Michalski’s extended participation in his Juvenile Justice classes. “Sergeant Michalski is a veteran law enforcement officer whose specialty is Juvenile Justice – working with children caught up in the law enforcement system in one way or another. This partnership, providing three separate visits to our Juvenile Justice classes, will provide our students with real-world knowledge as their familiarity and proficiency with this particular area of the legal system progresses.” Details can be found at www.northwesterncollege.edu or by calling toll-free 888-205-2283.

Lend Me Your Ear...

Greetings and salutations, fine readers of mine. Toots here... reporting for this week’s duty. Against my will, my principles, my gut feelings and my total inclinations. Thinking back to the wondrous days of when I had fun, had adventures, did things, and so forth. Yep, Toots actually went places and stuff. Long time ago. Hey, when did I grow up? Thinking back to one great place - The House on the Rock in Spring Green, Wisconsin. This house would appear to be an engineering impossibility. It is actually perched on a 60-foot-tall chimney of rock. Alex Jordan, an eccentric collector and dreamer with a wild imagination, discovered this piece of land as a child. He dreamed of building a weekend retreat and actually began construction prior to owning the plot of land. You go, Alex! My hero!! The house was literally built amongst (and around) the trees - beautiful, old trees grace each room. Begun in the 1940s, the house is now surrounded by a 200acre complex of rooms, streets, buildings, and gardens. Over the years Alex’s original 14 rooms expanded to many buildings and endless, unique collections. Wowee! Toots was bedazzled, by golly! This man was

(in Toots’ over-active imagination) an insane genius. The whole experience was magical, yet a bit disturbing. Something that Toots will never get out of her head. A fanciful and wondrous experience. Toots felt a special ambience. Yes, Madame Editor, Toots does know some adjectives. Hah! It’s been a long time since Toots has gotten away (can you tell?). Usually she is anxious to get home, but this time I wanted to stay. I did not click my patent leather shoes and sing, There’s no place like home...” I wanted to plant roots. The little town of Spring Green (pop. 1622 in 2012) was beckoning to me. Very alluring! The simple life - color me in. A little town square. One block holds a newspaper office, real estate office and a theatre. Now wouldn’t that newspaper like to have Toots Malone on board? Yes, Madame Editor would miss me but she’d get over it. Toots has been known to dabble in the field of real estate - so this would work as well. Plus, Toots could become a Thespian again -- at the local theatre. Whoopie! Now in between all these ventures, Toots could sit herself on one of the town benches and chat with the locals. Then, go back to the ranch and till the ground, sow the seed

Improvements to Archer and Narragansett and reap the harvest. She could milk the cows, collect the hens’ bounty and slop the pigs. Wow, Toots could rebuild the barn, can the fruits and vegetables, mend the apparel and cook the viddles. She could live off the land and go back to nature. Who needs electricity and gas and phones and stuff? For transportation, Toots would rely on her faithful donkey. And in between all this, Toots could relax, sip coffee, sit and enjoy nature, smell the manure... Huh?? Hey, wait a minute. This all sounds good sometimes, but today me thinks it may need some fine tuning. With Toots keeping the home fires burning and doing all the aforementioned, where is the leisure time? Toots would have to be up at the crack of dawn (the cows would insist). Color Toots back out. Toots is spoiled and used to her modern contraptions. She likes all the newfangled gizmos. And me thinks that Toots is not of the physical labor type. Okay, back up - pull up on them reins. Toots is staying on, Madame Editor. I know that you are pleased as punch, Ol’ Benevolent One. No, I didn’t forget the lesson of the week. Let’s see... 1. There’s no place like home. 2. If you get the chance, make sure and visit Willy Wonka’s Chocolate Factory. Just make sure you are the good child, as Toots is. ‘til next week... Toots Malone

The left turn lane installed this spring at Archer and Narragansett has improved traffic flow tremendously on westbound Archer. Alderman Zalewski made the request to the Illinois Department of Transportation after Archer Avenue was resurfaced early this year. “The left turn lane at Archer and Narragansett has not only eased the flow of traffic, but it has alleviated headaches for residents and commuters on Archer Avenue,” Alderman Zalewski stated. Pictured with Alderman Zalewski is Ward Superintendent Al Cacciottolo.

Johnny Winter 1944-2014

As Rolling Stone magazine noted, what are the odds of a small town, blind, albino kid becoming a blues guitar legend and a headlining arena rock act? Born in Beaumont, Texas on 2/23/44, Johnny Winter was performing with his brother Edgar on TV at age 10. By 15 he recorded his first single. In 1968 he released his first album, “The Progressive Blues Experiment”. In December, he met Mike Bloomfield in Chicago. Bloomfield invited him to jam with him and Al Kooper at the Fillmore East. Columbia Records head Clive Davis was in the audience and immediately signed Winter with a $600,000 advance. 1969 saw the release of “Johnny Winter”, a performance at Woodstock, and an affair with Janis Joplin (performing at Madison Square Garden).

In 1970 he teamed up with Rick Derringer and had a huge hit with “Rock & Roll Hoochie Koo”. Winter also developed a heroin habit. By the late ‘70’s his popularity began to wane. Winter rededicated himself to the blues, producing 3 Grammy winning albums for Muddy Waters. He won a Grammy for himself with “Nothing But The Blues”. He released 18 studio albums and 8 live albums during his career. The 4-CD boxed set “True To The Blues” was released in February. His latest studio album, “Step Back”, with Eric Clapton, Billy Gibbons, Joe Perry,

and Joe Bonamassa, is scheduled for a 9/2 release. Johnny Winter was one of the most dynamic blues players I’ve ever witnessed. His guitar was electrifying; his vocals howled. The hottest blues jam I ever saw featured Winter, Muddy Waters, Willie Dixon, and Eric Clapton. After slide virtuoso Derek Trucks jammed with Winter at the ’07 Crossroads Festival at Toyota Park, he bowed in homage to Winter before asking him to autograph his guitar. Johnny Winter died in Zurich, Switzerland on 7/16. He was 70. www.KenQualter.com

Midway Fly Away 5K run/walk returns to the airfield of Midway Airport

Runners and walkers of all fitness levels are invited to take part in the second annual Midway Fly Away 5K, located directly on the airfield of Midway International Airport, on Sunday, Sept. 21st beginning at 9 a.m. The Midway Fly Away 5K will benefit SCC/Special Olympics Chicago. Now in its second year, the Midway Fly Away 5K attracted nearly 700 participants in 2013. This year’s event is expected to be even larger with a family focus, including face painters, balloon artists, and activities for children of all ages. With stunning views of Chicago’s skyline as the backdrop and jets taking off and landing overhead, the Midway Fly Away 5K is one of the most unique events in the city. Participants may run or walk the 3.1 mile course, while getting a sneak peek inside the Southwest Airlines hangar, where all pre-race activities will take place. Registration is $40 and is now open through September 18, at www.sochicago.org. At that website, participants can create a personal fundraising page where supporters can make tax- deductible donations. Registration must take place in advance of the event. On-site registration will not be available.  Those who raise more than $250 will automatically be entered to win two, round-trip airline tickets to anywhere in the continental United States that Southwest Airlines flies-with no restrictions or blackout dates. The Midway runner, the person who places in the  middle of the race, will also win Southwest Airlines tickets. First place male and female winners will also be awarded a prize to be determined. Doors to the Southwest Airlines hangar will open at 8 a.m. Participants are required to bring a photo ID for check-in at the Southwest Airlines Hangar, located at 5035 W. 55th St. at Midway International Airport. No backpacks/bags will be allowed on the course, however, there will be

gear check available the day of the race. No strollers, bicycles, tricycles, rollerblades, inline skates, will be allowed on the airfield.  Free parking will be available for all participants in the Midway Airport Economy Parking lot, 5050 W. 55th St. Complimentary shuttle buses will be provided from the CTA’s Orange Line Midway stop. Special Olympics was created in Chicago at Soldier Field in 1968. The Chicago program is now the largest in the

State of Illinois. Today, there are more than 4.2 million athletes that take part in Special Olympics programs internationally. The Special Olympics Chicago program is the largest in the State of Illinois. The Chicago Program alone is larger than 26 other complete State programs. Chicago is the birthplace of Special Olympics and is now held in over 150 countries, worldwide. Special Olympics provides year-round sports training and competition in a variety of Olympic type

sports for children (ages 8 and older) and adults with mental disabilities or closely related developmental disabilities.  The program gives them continuing opportunities to develop physical fit-

ness, demonstrate courage, experience joy and participate in a sharing of gifts, skills and friendships with their families, other Special Olympics athletes and the commu-

nity.  In Chicago alone, more than 5,000 athletes are involved in the program. Since 1969, Special Children’s Charities has been the fundraising co-sponsor of Special Olympics Chicago, in partnership with the Chicago Park District.  Special Children’s Charities mission statement is to promote, foster and encourage physical and mental health and improvement through athletics, recreational and social activities among youth and adults with disabilities.  The Chicago Department of Aviation (CDA) is self-supporting, using no local or state tax dollars for operations or capital improvements.
