Nazareth Academy seniors finish up the year with “Circle the City” service project

Every year, Nazareth Academy, 1209 W. Ogden in LaGrange Park, provides a service opportunity for seniors entitled “Circle the City.” This community wide service project is aimed at reiterating to students that a Nazareth graduate is someone whose gifts are used in service of the community. The experience embodies the Sisters of St. Joseph, who from

their early founding, responded to the poor and to the needs of the times as they experienced hopelessness in the places in which they lived. The mission of the Sisters of St. Joseph works toward unity with all God’s people and all creation “That All May Be One.” Nazareth Academy’s mission is to further this Gospel based vision. On Friday, May 16, 2014,

(or on a date surrounding this event) every student from the Class of 2014 went to various sites throughout the Chicago area, where they responded to the poor and the needs of our time. Teachers, staff, administrators, campus ministers, and Sisters of St. Joseph were involved in the planning and implementation of this day. Nazareth seniors are pictured above.

St. Daniel students visit Naper Settlement

The 5th grade students at St. Daniel the Prophet School ended their study of Early American history with a visit to the Naper Settlement in June. The trip allowed the students to experience life in Illinois in the late 19th century by touring buildings from the original settlement of the Naperville area. The students took part in a bucket brigade at the firehouse, attended class in the one-room Copenhagen schoolhouse, saw demonstrations at the Print shop and Blacksmith shop, and toured the church, Log Cabin house and Mitchell Mansion. The trip was a great way to bring the curriculum alive! St. Daniel the Prophet School is located at 5337 S. Natoma Avenue. For information, call 773-586-1225 during summer hours (9:00 a.m.-12:00 p.m., Mon.—Thur.) or check out the website at stdan.net.

Lend Me Your Ear...

Greetings, fine readers! Bad week - so I will let you take advantage of a 2008 column. Enjoy! Last week, one of our distribution drivers did not show up for work. Toots, always the willing and “I Can” sort of person that she is, volunteered to fill in. Toots rises to the occasion. Communication lines broke down. It’s the case of Toots can’t hear or the person giving the orders is not clear. I have my own opinion on this... Toots did not realize that this was a 6 a.m. deal. This does not bode well. At 6:00 a.m. Toots receives the call inquiring on her whereabouts. Toots replies, “Right here - at home.” Caller is not pleased and proceeds to raise the volume. “You are supposed to be Right Here!” Okay already! Don’t get excited. So, here you have Toots. Still in her pajamas and they don’t even match. Toots has a bad thing about just grabbing the pajamas at night and the tops and bottoms never match. Toots pours a cup of coffee (her life’s blood) and heads to the Journal. Not even a block away from the house, the cup of coffee goes flying. This is not going to be a great day. All signs are pointing to this fact.

Toots arrives and no distributor. Toots figures - why stand around, make myself useful. There are bundles of papers there, so I figure that I will help out the distributor and bring them into the office. Hard work - Toots rises to the occasion. Twenty minutes later and Toots has completed the assignment. At this moment the (volatile) distributor pulls up and in very colorful language screams, “Someone has stolen the newspapers!” Oh no, Toots replies - I brought them into the office. Well, that was obviously the wrong thing to do - Toots figured this out by looking at the very red face of the distributor. He had them there to put in his truck and now he had to take them from the office. As I said, signs pointed in the direction that this was not going to be a good day. This story brought to mind an episode of years past. Toots and her brood had just moved into a new house. We had scoped out the neighborhood and found a place that had hamburgers for 39¢ each. What a deal! Only problem was, this special was only on Sundays from 10 a.m. to 12 noon. Toots does not find hamburgers to be the perfect Sunday break-

fast. But the kids thought it sounded great. So on Sunday, Toots’ youngest son (Joey) volunteers to go and procure breakfast for the family. Youngest son is eleven years old. Toots was always a “Nervous Nellie” when it came to her kids. But she figures - Okay, they must have a bit of freedom and the restaurant is only one block away. So she tells son that yes, hamburgers for breakfast sound great and that he can walk and get them. Remember, I told you about checking out the area on Saturday. The kids and I hit a lot of great stores that day. One was a shoe store. They had a great clearance sale going on. They had a pair of black patent leather thigh-high boots that ever existed. Originally priced at $60, they were giving them away for $19.99. Toots had to have them. So son is out getting hamburgers and Toots decides to take a quick shower. Toots has just stepped into the shower when she hears a huge commotion at the front door. She throws on an old robe and grabs a couple of safety pins to secure it. Toots’ two oldest children (12 and 13 years of age) are hysterical. Come quick, they yell. Joey has been hit by a car. Toots literally rips off the robe and throws

on a coat. Closest thing in foot wear are the boots. Toots puts them on and runs. There is a crowd of people. When I say crowd, I mean huge. There was a church on this block and the entire congregation ran out when they heard that a child had been hit by a car. Toots’ son is standing in the middle, blood covering every inch of his body. He appears dazed. Talk about dazed and confused - Toots has never been good with emergencies. She grabs her son and starts running home. With all the people involved, there must have been dozens of phone calls to 911. By the time Toots reaches the house, the street is loaded with police cars, fire trucks, ambulances and paramedics. They all follow Toots into the house. Running out of space (thanks to good ol’ Madame Editor) so I’ll have to wrap it up and give you the grand finale next week. And it’s explosive! Now I must give out the ‘lesson” of the week. For simplicity’s sake, I shall make it “All’s well that ends well.” How’s that old benevolent Madame Editor. Best I can do. If you desire something more profound, kindly give me more space. ‘til next week... Toots Malone

You are invited to help name two trash collection boats

Commissioner Debra Shore, Chairman of Public Information and Education Committee of the Metropolitan Water Reclamation District of Greater Chicago, has announced that the District is adding two trash collection boats to its fleet in honor of its 125th Anniversary, and the Public is invited to help name them. The two new skimmer boats will operate along the Chicago Area Waterways (CAWS) from midApril to mid-October and after significant storms year round, unless weather conditions prohibit

safe operations. Currently the MWRD operates two 28-foot pontoons to collect floatables that wind up in the CAWS during rainstorms. Workers remove debris along the South Branch to the North Branch of the Chicago River. Commissioner Shore stated, “The Chicago Area Waterways are a vital amenity for people in Cook County. These new debris collection boats will improve water quality and recreational experience for thousands of people canoeing, kayaking, boating and enjoying the waterways”. An invitation to help christen the boats will be extended to individuals who submit the winning boat names. To submit names for consideration email public.affairs@ mwrd.org by 9/15/14.

St. Laurence leadership program builds on tradition

Bushy Came Home

by Cleatus (Cherokee Lee) Murdaugh You heard me talk about Bushy She’s a neighborhood squirrel At first we thought Bushy was a boy But found out Bushy was a girl. Now the way that we found this out Was just a couple years ago When she showed up with babies And we had to watch ‘em grow. Well Bushy came back home again And the babies are much bigger If they turn out like their mother did They’ll all be a master digger.

St. Laurence’s Leadership Program began in 2001 at the urging of then STL board member, business leader and alumnus Tim O’Malley. O’Malley had observed that businesses were in need of good leaders and that many universities were developing leadership training courses to meet this need. He felt that St. Laurence was in an excellent position to put itself ahead of the curve and initiate a leadership program that would give students a distinct advantage over other high school students by providing them the skills, confidence and knowledge of effective leaders. The program started with twenty-five students designated as Leader/Scholars who received weekly training, team building at Irons Oaks Adventure Center, and a special leadership workshop from the Leadership Development Center at Bradley University. Eventually the program expanded and all these experiences were then offered to all students. St. Laurence also began training both grammar schools and high schools in leadership skills, sharing the knowledge and skills that it had developed among its own students thus making St. Laurence truly the school “Where Leadership Begins”. Jeff Clemens ’00 recently joined St. Laurence as the new Director of Leadership. Mark Scott has been the Director of Leadership since the program’s inception, shaping the program to become part of the school. Mark’s leadership in this position has paved the way and left a legacy for Jeff. “I want our students to leave St. Laurence with the essence of what leadership comes down to: speaking up, standing up or acting upon something in which you believe,” said Clemens. Now they all like to bury their food Whether one place or another And seem to choose the flower pot Just exactly like their mother. Well now this year I have no pots Or many flowers in my yard They’ll have to find another place So I’m going to be on guard.

Our Lady of Snows track team

Music Corner by Ken Qualter

More Summer Music

Last week I wrote about the summer concert season. After a bit more research I found more concerts of interest. The First Midwest Bank Ampitheatre in Tinley Park, or the First Midwest Tweeter Center of the New World as I call it, has some interesting shows. Bruno Mars 6/20, Tim McGraw 6/27, Jimmy Buffett 6/28, Journey/ Steve Miller 7/12, Toby Keith 7/13, Lynyrd Skynyrd/Bad Company 7/23, Aerosmith/Slash 7/25, Motley Crue/Alice Cooper 8/8, Miranda Lambert 8/15, and Kiss/Def Leppard 8/16. I thought Charter One Pavilion on Northerly Island was a pretty cool venue. Last year it became First Merit Bank

Pavilion and went from 8,000 to over 30,000 seats. I've heard mixed reviews on the new venue. I can only imagine the parking situation. But you can experience Widespread Panic there on 6/20. Ray Lamontagne and Dave Matthews will play on 6/27, and 7/4 & 5, respectively. You can also Phish there on 7/18 & 20. The Akoo Theatre (formerly Rosemont Theatre) is now the Rosemont Theatre (formerly Akoo Theatre). Peter Frampton and Cheap Trick play there on 6/20. Great venue. Another great place to hear live music is the Chicago Theatre. You can see Ringo Starr 6/28, Sara Bareilles 7/10, Jack White 7/23, Natalie Merchant 7/24, John Fogerty

7/27, Tori Amos 8/5, and Chaka Khan 8/9 perform there. My favorite place in the world to see a concert is the Auditorium Theatre at Michigan and Congress. Designed by Dankmar Adler and Louis Sullivan it was completed in 1889. A beautiful ornate venue with superb acoustics. It was the original home of the Chicago Civic Opera and the Chicago Symphony Orchestra. Unfortunately, they don't do many concerts there anymore. But Jack White will play there on 7/24. It's worth it just to experience the theatre. This is by no means a complete listing. Just some highlights I found. Questions/Comments: www.KenQualter.com

Congressman Lipinski’s  offices in Orland Park, Oak Lawn, Chicago, and Lockport will accept worn American flags for proper disposal. For additional information, call 312-886-0481.   If you’re looking for a replacement, his Washington, D.C. office can help constituents obtain an American flag that›s been flown over the U.S. Capitol.  Contact the office tollfree at 866-822-5701 to find out more. If possible, his office can accommodate requests for flags that are flown at a specific date or time. If you’re a veteran, he will provide you with a flag for free.

Farmers’ Market returns to Summit Park District

Crime Report Courtesy of swchicagopost.com by Dan O’Bookum Editor’s note: We present this police blotter news as a public service, courtesy of our friends at swchicagopost.com. May all of us also remember that a person charged with a crime is presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law. *** An 18-year-old Archer Heights woman told police she was robbed on the front porch of her home, near 49th and Kedvale. She reported that at about 12:30 p.m. on June 13th she heard her front doorbell ring, but she did not see anyone on the porch. When she walked outside to investigate, she was pushed down by a robber, who stole her cell phone and ran. The robber is described as a Hispanic man, 24-28 years old, 5’9 to 6’0 tall, olive complexion. *** A 48-year-old Sleepy Hollow man told police

that his car was stolen at gunpoint from his garage, near 46th and Kilpatrick, at 5:25 p.m. on June 8th. He said he was standing near his garage when two men approached. One asked for a beer and the other pulled a pistol and demanded his car keys. They sped away in his 2005 Chrysler and are described as Hispanic men age 25-35, 5’7 to 5’11 and 175-190 pounds. *** Thieves stole all four tires and wheels from two cars in the early morning hours of June 12th. One car, a 2008 Acura, was parked in front of a home near 51st and Natchez. The other, a 2006 Lexus, was parked in front of a home near 51st and Latrobe. Both cars were left sitting on bricks. *** Burglars used a bolt cutter to break into the service door of a garage near 62nd and Mayfield

JUNE 22

and steal a large toolbox filled with tools. The crime was discovered by the victim on June 13th. *** Burglars kicked in the front door of a home near 53rd and Millard and ransacked the premises. The crime was discovered by the victim, a 42-year-old woman, at 7:45 p.m. Friday, June 13. She was initially unable to determine what, if anything, had been stolen. *** Burglars entered a garage near 59th and Kildare and stole an assortment of power tools, as well as a car jack and an air compressor. The crime was discovered by the victim, a 46-year-old man, at 5 p.m. Thursday, June 12. *** Burglars entered a garage near 60th and Mulligan and stole a power washer and a tile saw. The crime was discovered by the victim, a 58-year-old man, at 9 a.m. Tuesday, June 10. The victim told police that the burglar broke into his car, which was parked outside, and then used the automatic garage door opener to gain access to the garage. Dear Editor, The Midway Historians is a group dedicated to the accurate preservation of the history of Midway Airport. We preserve this history in both print and historical photos of the Airport. An article in the June 5th edition of the NewsHound indicated that Alderman Edward Burke spoke of the history of Midway Airport at the UBAM meeting. At this meeting he apparently said that Midway was named Midway because it was midway between the East and West coast, not in honor of the World War II Battle of Midway. This statement is inaccurate. Quoting an article which appeared in the Dec. 13, 1949 edition of the Chicago Tribune,” the City Council voted unanimously to change the name of Chicago Municipal Airport to Chicago Midway Airport. honored Lt. Cmdr. Edward H. (Butch) O›Hare in naming the O›Hare International Airport.» Rededication of the Airport in memory of the Battle of Midway as suggested by Ald. Burke, is unnecessary as the Airport’s name already commemorates this important WW II battle. The sculpture “America” and the SBD Dauntless Dive Bomber suspended from the ceiling in Concourse A, as part of a historical display, keep the Battle Of Midway and the heritage of the Airport alive as passengers view this profound memorial. the Aviation Committee, said «the new name, recommended by the Chicago Aero Commission, will commemorate the heroes of the great naval and air victory at Midway. At the last meeting of the council committee on Dec. 5, 1949, Nathaniel Leverone, member of the Aero Commission, eloquently outlined the reasons the Commission had for wishing to rename the Airport. On Jan. 3 and 4, 1942 Naval and Army Air Force planes sank two Japanese carriers and routed the Japanese fleet at the Battle of Midway. Leverone commented on the fact that previously, the City had
