Friday, May 23, St. Richard Catholic School held their annual student Walk-A-Thon, as well as Principal For A Day. Community member Gene Burke had the honor of winning Principal For A Day, and wanted to make sure this day was super memorable for the students, teachers, and volunteers. He surprised everyone by contracting the four Chicago team mascots to visit the school: Benny the Bull (Chicago Bulls), Clark the Cub (Chicago Cubs), Southpaw (Chicago White Sox), and Tommy Hawk (Chicago Blackhawks). The students were tremendously excited to see not one but four Chicago icons walk with them during the event. Students will surely remember this day for years to come.

Lend Me Your Ear... Greetings and salutations, to all of you! I throw myself at your feet and humbly beg your forgiveness. Toots is still not back to exciting. She has been running all week on her “various enterprises” and hasn’t had time to find trouble. No, Toots meant to say, “she hasn’t had time to find excitement.” Silly me! Hows ‘bout I tell you a story from many moons ago? The time that Toots decided to take her four darlings to Wisconsin Dells. That should be good for a chuckle or two, Ol’ Great and Grand Madame Editor. No, I am not trying to be sarcastic. I’ll bet that 43.6% of people find you Great and Grand. We won’t speak about the other 56.4%. So here goes... Toots and her friend Lois (along with her darlings) found themselves in possession of a whole bunch of tickets to the attractions at Wisconsin Dells. Toots (the bookkeeper) pulls out pen and paper and figures how much would be needed for a 3-day excursion. Okay, first off - what about accommodations? No problem, says friend. We will camp out - we will be one with nature. Toots doesn’t know if she likes the sound of this - but then again Toots al-

ways wants to try everything once. So...Toots arrived at the magic number of $250. Yes, $250 total for the entire vacation. What a deal! We have the free tickets, so all we need to do is figure in the cost of the campground, gas for the cars and food. What could be simpler? We each need to come up with $125. Ever notice that figuring on paper everything looks doable, but in reality it doesn’t even come close? So the day arrives. We’re all packed up, with plenty of snack foods. Can’t afford to stop and buy stuff. We are taking two cars. Toots has an old Volkswagon that people have said could be on its last leg. But we know Toots. The ever-shining eternal optimist. There is a CB radio in each car, so as drivers can keep in touch. It’s 200 miles to Wisconsin, we’ve got a full tank of gas, half a pack of cigarettes, it’s dark and we’re wearing sunglasses. Hit it. We are entering the expressway. Toots freezes. This is a bad time to find out that she can’t merge. Truck drivers are insane at this point. Toots is in a little Volkswagon, with a bunch of little kids and she totally freaks out. She slams on the brakes

Can you guess who this is? in the middle of the expressway. Maybe before planning this trip, Toots should have seen if she could drive on the expressway. So the truckers are blowing their horns and cursing. Toots has lost all sanity and presses down on the gas pedal. Toots is paralyzed with fear. Right before we took off, Toots asked Lois what would happen if she had a tire blow out on the expressway. Lois replies, “Well, you’d probably all die.” Wow, that’s scary. So Toots is speeding along for a couple of hours and all of a sudden the car doesn’t feel right. She radios over to Lois and says we must pull over and check this out. She pulls off at the next exit and Toots keeps on going. It turns out that Toots really can’t merge and can not get up the gumption to get in the right lane. Toots figures that soon she will run out of gas and she will figure it out from there. Next week, Toots might continue this saga - out of space as usual. But for right now, if I don’t come out with a ‘lesson’ of the week, I’m history. My lesson of the week is a fool in a basket can’t change his spots because crying over a cock and bull story is a silver lining in itself. From riches to rags and going down on the wrong side of the bed just goes to show that it’s anyone’s call and that curiosity killed the pig in the poke. Mums the word about the bitten hand and remember that the bigger they are can make a long story small. Twenty three skidoo. Great lesson if you can figure it out. ‘til next week... Toots Malone

Prior to his new appointment, Kirk served as Chief of Staff to State’s Attorney Alvarez. “I am proud to name Dan Kirk as my First Assistant. Queen of Peace students recognized for outstanding achievements

Music Corner by Ken Qualter

Summertime, And The Livin’ Is Easy… Well, I don’t really know how easy the living is. But it is living and working in more pleasant circumstances. After the longest, most awful winter in the history of the planet, and a spring that lasted, what, maybe 3 weeks, summer is here. And it sure feels good! A few thoughts as we enter the season and routines change for a lot of us... If you have children who play in a school band, you might want to consider lessons for them over the summer. Putting the instrument down and forgetting practice routines is just a bad idea. Private lessons can provide a fresh perspective and inspiration for your young aspiring virtuoso. Another alternative

might be enrolling them in a music camp. These can last from a day to a week. Tuition varies. But, again, keeping them inspired and excited about making music can pay big dividends in their progress. Perhaps you’re on a tight budget or time schedule. Buy them a couple of music books and let them have at it. There are books available for every instrument, age group, and skill level. They often include CD’s or DVD’s, which can really help your young musician. Take them down to your local music store and ask for a catalogue. Let your kids choose something that excites them! And be careful with those musical instru-

ments. Especially anything that is made out of wood. I sometimes see guitars sitting in the back seat of a car on a hot day and I cringe. Temperatures in a locked up car can soar to 120 degrees in 10 minutes on a hot sunny day. Terrible for instruments (and deadly for children and dogs). Colognes, insect repellent, and sweat can ruin the finish on a wooden instrument pretty quickly. Most of this stuff is common sense, but it doesn’t hurt to think now, rather than have an “Oh crap!” moment later. Be careful, have fun, and make music! Questions/Comments: www.KenQualter.com

On Thursday, May 8th, students, faculty and families came out to cheer on the recipients of the many, prestigious awards that are given out annually to Queen of Peace seniors. Among the most hardearned awards include the Illinois State Scholars, given to those who finished in the top 10% of all students state-wide. This year Jenna M. Buche, Jessica L. Doyle, Michelle L. Frederick, Natalie M. Palm, Allison Trendle and Stephanie M. Vaccaro all earned the honor. Also notable are those students who maintained at least a 4.0 Grade Point Average

Congressman Dan Lipinski (IL-3) is making it a top priority to secure funding for a railroad grade separation at 65th Street and Harlem Avenue. The project – either an underpass or overpass that would eliminate train blockage of 65th Street – would have a significant positive impact on the surrounding area, specifically the southwest side of Chicago, Bedford Park, and Summit. With the possibility this year of a new federal road construction bill and a state capital construction bill, there are new opportunities to move the project forward. “Back in 2003, the CREATE program was announced with great fanfare at a press conference at 63rd and Harlem,” said Rep. Lipinski. “This program will invest billions to increase the efficiency of our region’s passenger and freight rail, and enhance the quality of life for residents. A significant part of this quality of life enhancement is the construction of two dozen grade separations. These are underpasses or overpasses that move

streets to 63rd. Over the years, Lipinski has spoken with many local residents, elected officials, businesses, and employees about this project and what it would mean for the area. The benefits would include fewer delays getting to work, school, church, or shopping. Also, less gas wasted waiting for a train to pass, increased safety, economic development, and the potential for more jobs in the area. “There is new hope for getting this project going this year,” stated Rep. Lipinski. “Both the federal government and the state of Illinois may be passing new bills that will help ease the congestion on our roads. The most recent federal bill to fund highway and transit projects expires at the end of September. I am Illinois’ most senior member on the House Transporta-

roads over or under rail lines. One of these has been slated for 63rd and Harlem. But while CREATE has moved forward over the years, starting with $100 million that I was able to secure for it, progress on the grade separations has lagged, largely because of the cost.” While 63rd Street was the location originally chosen for the grade separation, Congressman Lipinski now believes if the engineering is feasible, 65th Street would be a better choice. 65th is a four lane road on a largely commercial street and 63rd is a two lane road on a largely residential street. Hundreds of trucks every day travel to and from businesses in the Clearing Industrial District and a grade separation on 63rd would bring many of those trucks up residential side

tion Committee and we will soon be working on a new bill. I’ll be pushing to pass a robust, longterm bill that will provide federal support for projects that would alleviate problems like the one many of us face every day at Harlem Avenue.” Lipinski is hopeful that Illinois will pass a new capital bill that would provide funding for all types of construction projects including road construction. The last capital bill passed in Springfield is winding down and a new one may be done this year. He has met with Governor Quinn to tell him about the need for the Clearing grade separation, and he has worked with all the local state legislators to build support for this project. The estimated cost of the entire grade separation project is about $95 million dollars.

St. Symphorosa’s annual sixth grade Medieval Day was a success! The students spent the day moving from station to station learning about the Middle Ages. They experienced the language of Shakespeare, the skill of archery, what it was like in a castle and the ways of medieval lift. The students even tried to juggle and joke as the court jesters of the day to entertain the king and his court. The luncheon feast was eaten “medieval style”, without utensils. St. Symphorosa School, located at 6125 S. Austin, is extremely grateful to Parisi’s Drive-In for donating the bread for the meal.

Rediscover Chicago’s Loop at the premier of bodies in urban spaces

The Department of Cultural Affairs and Special Events presents the Chicago premiere of bodies in urban spaces performed by local dance artists and choreographed by Willi Dorner. The free performances will begin at Daley Plaza (50 West Washington St.) on Saturday, June 21 at 11 a.m. and 5 p.m. and Sunday, June 22 at 11 a.m. Audi-

ence members will meet at the Picasso to start their journey through the Loop to an unnamed, final destination. The performers lead the audience on an entertaining journey utilizing public and semi-public spaces as their stage. Along the way, they create a chain of living sculptures, built from the dancers’ bodies existing temporar-

ily in a doorway, on the side of a building or on the sidewalk. Spectators will have the chance to view performers as they test the limitless physicality of the human body, ultimately transforming a once vacant space into a temporary art installment. Bridgeview Detective visits Criminal Justice class

Days before the Memorial Day holiday, Bridgeview Police Detective Timothy Prince visited Northwestern College’s Bridgeview Campus to speak with students in Charles Chigas’ Criminal Justice class about DUIs. Memorial Day weekend is the start of the summer holiday season, a holiday which many times includes alcohol consumption, making for a busy weekend for law enforcement. Prince’s stories provided a great deal of food for thought for students who are interested in joining the ranks of local police departments. Detective Prince, a 24 year veteran of the Bridgeview Police Depart-

ment, is credited with over 700 DUI arrests over his career in Bridgeview, thus he had a lot of “war stories” to share with the students. “What do you do when you come upon a vehicle at an intersection with the driver passed out behind the wheel and reeking of alcohol, but with his foot on the brake and the car in drive?” he asked the students. If you startle them, he advised, they could lurch into the intersection and kill a family in an oncoming car. They could also hurt themselves, he added. What about driving impaired by drugs, he challenged them? They won’t always register a blood alcohol level, but they could be higher than a kite. Applying the law to real life scenarios of what officers find on the streets made for a riveting class discussion, and invoked lots of questions from the students. St. Barbara Barb-a-thon

Every student at St. Barbara School looks forward to the yearly Barba-thon. It is a fun day and a way to raise money for our school. Students ask friends and families to make a monetary pledge to school so that they can do their walk around the park. After the walk, the students stay and play at the park. For a minimum pledge of $15, the students walk and are given a hot dog and chips lunch. For various higher amounts, the students earned a Walka-thon t-shirt and pizza luncheon. The Ladies’ Guild achieved their goal of $7300 so every student was treated to an ice cream sundae! Top winners of the prizes of Toys R Us gift cards were: Av-

ery Chan, Donovan Chan and Jessica Groark. St. Barbara Ladies’ Guild has been in existence for 75 years. The Guild works diligently to support the school. They ladies sponsor a Halloween assembly and treat, a Christmas treat and ice cream sundae social for the children and help with a variety of school activities. St. Barbara School truly appreciates everything the Ladies’ Guild does for them. This year, the Ladies’ Guild gave the school a gift of $10,000. Chicago Police seize more than 2,250 illegal firearms in 2014

Chicago Police Superintendent Garry F. McCarthy announced Chicago Police have seized more than 2,250 illegal guns to date in 2014, highlighting the public safety challenge posed by illegal weapons and the need for stronger legislation to stem the flow of illegal firearms on the street. Police command staff, including Gresham (6th) District Commander Fred Waller, joined Superintendent McCarthy in discussing recent illegal gun incidents and recoveries. “Illegal guns drive violence, they are a public safety threat, and every year our Officers take more of them off the street than officers in any

other city in the country,” said Superintendent McCarthy. “We’ll continue efforts to enhance public safety, but we also need better laws to keep these illegal guns out of our communities and out of the hands of criminals in the first place.” Police recover more illegal firearms than police in any other city in the country. Superintendent McCarthy discussed several recent incidents that underscore the challenge of illegal guns in Chicago and the unrelenting efforts of Chicago Police to ensure public safety. Recently, officers responded to a call of a person with a gun in the Deering (9th) District.

Upon arrival, officers obtained information identifying the offender and then located the offender in the vicinity. Further investigation revealed that the firearm described to police was also in the area where the offender was found. The loaded revolver was recovered and the offender was placed into custody. The 20-year-old gang member was charged with Unlawful Possession of Firearm by Street Gang Member on Person. In an unrelated investigation, South Chicago (4th) District officers with knowledge of an incident of shots fired continued their investigation after receiving intelligence

about an individual responsible for firing the shots. Officers located the identified subject the following day and approached to conduct a field interview, at which time the individual adjusted his clothing and body. A loaded handgun was recovered from the offender. The firearm was found to have a defaced serial number. Further investigation revealed the 28-year-old felon previously was convicted of firearms-related offenses and was on federal probation and supervised release. The offender was charged with Possession of a Firearm with Defaced Serial Number, Aggravated Unlawful Use of Weapon/Loaded/No FOID, and Possession of Cannabis. In another incident, Calumet (5th) District officers curbed a vehicle for a traffic violation. Upon the officers’ approach to the vehicle, a passenger dropped a handgun to the floorboard. Officers promptly placed the offender into custody and recovered the loaded handgun, which was found to have been previously reported stolen. MWrD Commissioner greets Prime Minister of Ireland

Chicago Public Library receives national medal at White house ceremony

The Chicago Public Library today received the National Medal for Museum and Library Service at a ceremony hosted by First Lady Michelle Obama at the White House in Washington, D.C. Mayor Rahm Emanuel and Chicago Public Library Commissioner Brian Bannon, who accepted the award from Mrs. Obama, represented the City of Chicago at the event. “The Chicago Public Library continues to serve students and communities across the city by offering cutting-edge technologies alongside a phenomenal range of physical and digital resources,” said Mayor Emanuel. “After a recent study named Chicago home of the best public

library system in country, this award is yet another way to recognize what all Chicagoans know – that our libraries are no longer just a place for students to read about the past – we are transforming them into a place where students and neighborhoods can write their own story of future success.” The National Medal for Museum and Library Service is the nation’s highest honor for museums and libraries, recognizing service to the community. It is presented each year by the Institute of Museum and Library Services, the primary source of federal support for the nation’s 123,000 libraries and 17,500 museums. Since 1873, the Chicago Public Library has

encouraged lifelong learning by welcoming all people and offering equal access to information, entertainment and knowledge through innovative services and programs, as well as cuttingedge technology. The Chicago Public Library recently received the Social Innovator Award from Chicago Innovation Awards; is a finalist for a National Medal for Library Services from the Institute for Museum and Library Services, and was ranked number one in the U.S. and third in the world by an international study of major urban libraries conducted by the Heinrich Heine University Dusseldorf in Germany. Commissioner Patrick Daley Thompson of the Metropolitan Water Reclamation District of Greater Chicago was on hand to greet Prime Minister of Ireland, His Excellency, Michael Higgins and his wife, Sabina. His Excellency Michael D. Higgins is the ninth President of Ireland. He was directly elected by the people with the highest vote ever in a national election. This month, President Higgins will undertake the first ever State Visit to the United Kingdom by an Irish President, marking a highpoint of the Irish-British relationship. Congratulations to the Class of 2014 8th grade students who received their blue and gold class ribbons during the Ribbon Mass on Thursday, May 22. The students wear these ribbons as symbols of the hope that the whole school community has for their future success as they carry the values and spirit of St. Nicholas of Tolentine School with them on their path to and through high school. Each student’s ribbon was pinned by the middle school teachers as families looked on with pride. Students also received awards for their successes. A reception was held in the Hardiman Hall immediately following the Mass. To learn more about St. Nicholas of Tolentine School, please contact the school office 773-735-0772. “A Place Where Students Flourish and Talents Flow”
