Queen of Peace and St. Laurence High Schools gather for Liturgy

In the spirit of living out the Dominican value of building community Queen of Peace High School and St. Laurence High School gathered on December 10th to celebrate two Marian Feasts-the Feast of the Immaculate Conception as well as the Feast of Our Lady of Guadalupe.  Bishop Rojas was the main Celebrant at the Liturgy. It was a great opportunity for the students from both schools to share their gifts and talents in music, singing, and participation in this celebration. Farewell Joe Murray

The City NewsHound staff is deeply saddened by the recent death of Joe Murray. Joe was a newspaper distributor with the NewsHound and one of the best. We never received any complaints about Joe in all the time he delivered newspapers for us. He did his job 100% - each and

every week. Whether it be sunny and warm, or in the middle of a snowstorm, Joe did his job with pride. He made sure all newspapers hit the porch. He did his job up until the end. Joe Murray was a good man. He was born on November 9, 1957. He was the beloved husband to

Mary Murray (Brennan), loving father of Melinda and Brandon Thompson, and to Becky and Dan Kapral. Joe was the treasured son of Bernadine Murray, and brother of Elizabeth and Susan Murray. He was uncle to many nieces and nephews. Joe served in the Navy from age 16 to 20. He was a carpenter for 32 years, and a jack-of-all trades type of person. Joe Murray was a huge movie buff. He loved spending time with his wife cooking, cleaning, gardening, watching TV and movies, and doing little projects around the house. Men like Joe do not come about often. He will be missed by many. May he rest in peace.

Lend Me Your Ear... Greetings and salutations, fine readers of mine! A week into the New Year already! My, how time flies! Scary! Toots has been thinking about getting old. But not too old to still make snow angels. Cold... but I gotta do it. The temptation is way too great! And you know Toots and temptations. She is not so much about resisting them, as she is into finding them. It’s the New Year thing. Everybody looks back at the last year (and their life in general). Never satisfied, always with the resolution of doing better, doing more. Give it a few weeks - the resolutions swiftly fly out the window. Fly, fly, fly away home, I say. It has been said that the number one factor in aging is burdens. Your burdens, or how you carry them, make you old. Sorry, I can not give credit to the wise person who spoketh it. Toots writes these down as she hears them, but sometimes fails to get the author. So, that is what makes one older? That just

gives Toots a ‘lesson of the week’ right off. From here on in, Madame Editor, Toots shall not be burdened. Heck with the way I carry them, I don’t want any. So watch your fine fountain pen, Madame Editor. Hate to see an ‘incident’ happen to the tip. Get my drift? Where was I? How easily my mind is carried away! Oh, talking about aging. That’s right, how silly! And just as a side note: No one need worry - Toots will not be getting old anytime soon! Toots started out today by thinking of how the importance (or priority) of things directly relate to the person. When we are young, things are big. Toots’ thoughts on this started out when the ‘daughter of the daughter’ called screaming, “My lotions, my lotions. I will NEVER go back to that school and NEVER talk to anyone from there.” Back up, Toots! Readers are trying desperately to follow you. The ‘daughter of the daughter’ was twelve years old, in the sixth

grade. Her greatest possession was her pink purse. Went everywhere with her, cause it contains ‘her stuff’. She hung it in the cloakroom (and prayed the cloaks did not violate it) at school and when she went to retrieve it, the purse was gone. She runs from the school, slips on ice and is basically hysterical as her father scoops her up. IT WAS GONE! And with it her ‘stuff’ - makeup, Christmas money, a McDonald’s ‘credit card’, pens, notes, lotion and various other items of extreme value (to her). Once again, Toots is being cut short. Yes, Toots likes to spin a story, elaborate on some things. Sooooo? Give her a break already. Every time, just when I get into it, I am clipped. Okay, purse was recovered with all valuables intact. But Toots was trying to make the correlation about how age puts the emotional price tag on certain things. Toots shall ‘pickup’ next week. ‘til next week... Toots Malone

The Science Coalition honors Rep. Lipinski for commitment to maintaining America’s leadership in basic Science research

“Meet Your Neighbor”

Lauren Brougham Glennon

Personal Stats: Married to Johnny (Glennon); we have a seven year old boy named Tighe and a puppy named Buck. What Do You Do For A Living? I am an attorney, actively practicing law for over 10 years. I am currently in private practice, but I was formerly an Assistant Corporation Counsel for the City of Chicago’s Law Department. I am a Judicial candidate for Judge 3rd Judicial Subcircuit, Cook County on March 18, 2014. How, Or Why, Did You Choose Your Career? Being the daughter of a Chicago Policeman (Charlie Brougham), I was introduced to the law at an early age, and as far back as grammar school, I was active in student government. For as long as I can remember, I studied Political Science in college. I then went on to DePaul University College of Law to earn my Juris Doctor. One Of The Biggest Events In Your Life? There are numerous events in my life that have shaped who I am and the person I have become. Here are a few; the sudden death of my father, getting married, having a beautiful baby boy, passing the bar exam and running for judge. The Best Advice That You Ever Received? Personally, my parents taught me to be independent, honest, hard working and fair; they emphasized the importance of education and gave me the tools to become self sufficient. Professionally, the first judge I appeared in front of taught me not to take the antics of opposing counsel personally. Most Unusual Thing That Ever Happened? Running for Cook County Circuit Court Judge has been a remarkable experience! I have met so many interesting and extraordinary people. When Are You The Happiest? I am the happiest when I am with Johnny, Tighe, Buck and when we are surrounded by our family and friends. I am also extremely happy when I am helping others. I attended Christ the King Grammar School and St. Ignatius College Prep High School, both of which instilled my value of service in our community. I was formerly a high school girls’ basketball coach at Mother McAuley and St. Ignatius. Additionally, I volunteer my time with the Chicago Police Memorial Foundation and the Chicago Fire Department Charity Ignite the Spirit. Who, Or What, Is Your Inspiration? My mom inspired me by her strength after my dad passed. Also, my husband, for encouraging me to actively pursue my dreams; his constant and unwavering support is inspirational. He inspires me by his work ethic. Johnny is a Chicago Firefighter and he is at one of the busiest houses in the City.

The Science Coalition recently presented Rep. Dan Lipinski (IL-3) with its Champion of Science Award in recognition of his strong commitment to funding the basic research that keeps the United States and the state of Illinois at the forefront of scientific discovery and technological innovation.  The award was presented to Rep. Lipinski by Northwestern University President Morton Schapiro and University of Chicago President Recipe Robert Zimmer at an event at 1871, a co-working center of the for digital startups in ChiWeek cago. Both universities, as well the University of Illinois, are members of

The Science Coalition. Since joining Congress in 2004, Rep. Lipinski has emerged as a leading voice in support of federal investments in innovation and scientific research at universities, national labs, and other entities in Illinois and across the country.  As a Ranking Member of the Science, Space and Technology Subcommittee on Research, Rep. Lipinski spearheaded the reauthorization of the National Science Foundation (NSF) in 2010, which increased support for highrisk research, technology transfer, and graduate research fellowships.  A former teacher and en-

gineer, he has worked to advance legislation to improve STEM education at the K-12, undergraduate, and graduate level, including the America COMPETES Act. The Science Coalition’s Champion of Science Award recognizes members of Congress whose actions and votes consistently reflect their belief that basic scientific research, conducted at universities and national labs across the country, is essential to the nation’s

ability to address pressing issues in health, security, energy and the environment, and additionally, that a strong federally supported basic research enterprise drives innovation that fuels the U.S. economy. Rep. Lipinski joins a distinguished group of more than 60 current and former members of Congress who have received this award since 1999. Don’t Leave Your Baby Out In The Cold! You wouldn’t leave your infant out in the car during these extreme weather conditions we’ve been having this winter. You wouldn’t leave your dog out. (Although there are idiots that do both). Don’t expose your guitar or musical instrument to the cold either! Every winter I see students coming into Discover Music for their lessons, carrying their guitars without a case or gig bag. And when I make a comment they’ll say something like, “Oh yeah, I have to get one of

those.” Or worse yet, “I left it at home.” Some of them are adults! Cheap gig bags start around $25. They don’t offer as much protection as the better bags, or a hard shell case, but hey, it’s something. You can cause serious damage to your guitar by exposing it to the cold. For one thing, you can crack the finish. I did that to my favorite guitar one brutally cold night, and I was being very careful. It is very expensive to refinish a guitar. But more important, you re-

ally don’t want to do that because it will change the tone. The wood on your guitar can crack or split. This is caused by the wood drying out with the low relative humidity in the winter. Another expensive repair. You can get a guitar humidifier for around $15, for hollow-bodies or acoustics. Try and keep your humidity at home near 50%. This will also help prevent another disaster – the glue holding your guitar together giving out. Old Ben Franklin said it best, “An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of care.” Take care of your baby. www.KenQualter.com

There is no doubt that the Christmas Spirit was alive and well at Nazareth Academy this past year! Nazareth’s annual Giving Tree Drive was a huge success thanks to the effort of everyone who participated – students and adults alike! Led by Service Team representatives and involving the generosity of over 800 people, each homeroom at Nazareth committed to collecting, wrapping and delivering specific gift items such as toys, board games and cash donations. This drive came fast on the heals of Nazareth’s Thanksgiving Food Drive and the school’s response to the devastating tornadoes in Washington, Illinois. Nazareth Academy is located at 1209 W. The award-winning, master planned, “green” Fay’s Point community is a tranquil waterfront redevelopment effort that already includes an 80-slip boat marina, dozens of newly constructed townhouses, restored wetlands, and nature trails filled with native plants and wildlife. St. Barbara students had the opportunity to sing greetings to commuters arriving for work or shopping at Millennium Station on December 10, 2013. At the request of the Big Shoulders Fund, St. Barbara students led by

Ms. Eva Mrgan, sang Christmas corals to those arriving at the station during the morning rush. Students are members of the school’s youth choir and include students in grades four through eight. The Big Shoulders Fund is an organization that provides scholarships to city Catholic school children throughout the city. Using public transportation, the students, Ms. Mrgan, principal, Mrs. Hurckes and two parents accompanied the students down to Millennium Station. After the performance, the students enjoyed hot chocolate before returning to school. Although it was very cold, everyone had a great time. The students really appreciated all of the people who stopped to hear them sing and applauded their performance.

Secretary of State Jesse White announces key traffic safety laws effective January 1

Two important pieces of legislation initiated this year by Secretary of State Jesse White are in effect as new laws as of January 1 and include measures that strengthen the state’s heralded Graduated Driver Licensing (GDL) program as well as further restrict the issuance of court supervision. Other new laws effective January 1 make significant changes to the Parking Program for Persons with Disabilities. Kelsey’s Law Public Act 98-0168, sponsored by state Rep. John D’Amico (D-Chicago) and state Sen. Martin Sandoval (D-Cicero), prohibits the issuance of a driver’s license to a driver under 18 who has an unresolved traffic citation. The new law also allows White’s office to cancel a GDL if it is determined that at the time of issuance the minor had a traffic citation for which a disposition had not been rendered. Under current law, a GDL applicant is not required

to report any pending traffic citations. The measure is named Kelsey’s Law in honor of Kelsey Little who in 2011 was seriously injured in an automobile crash by a young driver operating on a learner’s permit. The driver was issued a traffic citation for the incident, of which the Secretary of State’s office was unaware due to the lack of a reporting requirement. Three days later the teen driver applied for and was issued a driver’s license. Patricia’s Law Public Act 98-0169,

sponsored by state Rep. John D’Amico (D-Chicago) and state Sen. Michael Hastings (D-Matteson), will ensure that drivers involved in fatal crashes are ineligible for court supervision unless they have maintained a clean driving history. The legislation, named Patricia’s Law in honor of Patricia McNamara who was killed in an automobile crash in which the driver received court supervision, originated from White’s Advisory Committee on Traffic Safety, which unanimously supported the

measure at a meeting. Over the last decade, White’s office has initiated legislation to limit the issuance of court supervision, as well as establishing a central database to help judges and court personnel better track the dispositions of court supervision from county to county across the state. Parking Program for Persons with Disabilities: Public Act 97-0845, sponsored by former state Rep. Karen May and state Sen. Maggie Crotty (D-Oak Forest),

requires the disability license plate or parking placard holder to meet more stringent eligibility requirements that must be approved by physicians in order to receive a yellow and grey permanent placard. The new placard will exempt the authorized holder from the payment of parking meter fees because their disability restricts them from physically feeding the meter. Beginning Jan. 1, the fine for drivers caught misusing a disability plac-

ard will increase from $500 to $600. If a physician, physician assistant or advanced practice nurse knowingly falsifies a disability application, they will face increased fines from $500 to $1,000 for a first offense and up to $2,000 for a second offense. If the holder of the disability placard or license plates knowingly allows someone else to use their placard or license plates, that person will face a $1,000 fine for the first offense and a $2,000 fine for the 2nd offense.

Exercise caution when signing up for health club membership

Planning to lose weight is often a part of ringing in the New Year when the holiday season comes to an end. However, consumers who want to diet or shape up should be very cautious when signing up for exercise programs and gym memberships, advises the Better Business Bureau serving Chicago and North ern Illinois (BBB). In the last 12 months, consumers have filed 7,823 complaints with the BBB about health clubs. Many of these showed that consumers had difficulty cancelling memberships or with billing disputes. Before you sign a contract at a health club, the BBB advises you to consider your needs and your budget: Determine your fitness goals. It’s hard work to lose weight, and you need to find a program you can stick with and preferably one that you enjoy. Find a health club or exercise facility that is convenient and that offers times that fit your schedule. Visit the facility before joining. Check on cleanliness, adequacy of space, machines and instructors and any other factors important to you. Ask if you can try the facility out before you join. Consider your budget. Ask the health club about “joining” or enrollment fees and ongoing monthly costs. Does a weight loss plan require you to buy special foods? Can you cancel if you move or find that the program doesn’t meet your needs? If the facility closes, can you transfer your membership to another facility? Read the entire contract. Does it list all services and facilities and hours of operation? Is everything the salesperson promised included in the contract? What’s included in the monthly fee and what will cost you extra? What is the total cost, including enrollment fees and finance charges? Check a company’s Business Review at www.bbb.org Before beginning an exercise program or diet, the BBB advises consumers to consult a doctor for an assessment of over-all health risks. Get the doctor’s recommendations on weight-loss options and/or exercise regimens that fit your health status and ability to stick with it.

Gun Report by Artie Cultew I had another birthday coming up and was debating what I wanted to give myself as a present. I always tell others I really don’t need or want any more material things (and I really don’t) but I still reserve the right to get at least a little something for myself anyway. It is said that the main difference between a man and a boy is the price of their toys. Cars and guns are a lot pricier than Tinkertoys and train sets. (You probably know in which direction this is headed.) Being that I hadn’t bought any firearms since last year, I decided to go to my favorite gun shop and take a look around. There have been a few items on my short list, so I thought I might see if they had any of them in stock. As usual, they did not disappoint. There were a few possible contenders and I was having difficulty trying to make a decision but finally I made my choice. Now for the paperwork and background check. Then a stupid three-day wait. Personally, I don’t mind laws that require prospective gun buyers to show proper identification and answer a few possibly disqualifying questions before taking delivery on a potentially lethal weapon. It’s a pretty prudent and sensible thing to do and I don’t know anybody (gun owners or not) who would object to it. On the other hand, some laws are totally stupid and make absolutely no

sense whatsoever. One that comes to mind is the seventy-two hour waiting period that is required before the store can legally hand over your purchase to you. A lot of people mistakenly believe that there are detailed background checks being performed during this waiting period but that’s not true. A thorough background check only takes a minute or two and is performed before the 72-hour clock even begins. This is just a wait, plain and simple. And did I say stupid? (Yes, I did but it’s worth repeating.) Commonly referred to as a “cooling off” period, the intent of the law was to try to make everybody safer by preventing someone from buying a gun while in a moment of anger. A good example might be coming home early from work and catching your wife and the milkman in a compromising position. Were that to happen to most people, I honestly don’t think that they would suddenly turn

around, run out of their house and go to a gun store, buy a gun, come back home and start shooting their respective wives and lovers. But that’s exactly what our lawmakers seem to think would automatically happen. I guess it doesn’t occur to them that the cheated-on spouse might not resort to any violence at all. Or if he were violent, maybe he’d just start pounding the guy. If he felt murderous, he would probably reach for the nearest heavy object he could find or maybe go to the kitchen for a knife. Or maybe he has a gun (that ironically, he waited 72 hours for when he originally purchased it a long time ago). In any case, the threeday waiting period for gun purchases is serving absolutely no purpose other than to deliberately inconvenience the many good people out there who like to engage in the buying and selling of guns.
