Historic Preservation Programs in Four California Cities Receive $160,000 in Federal Grants SACRAMENTO, Calif. — California’s Office of Historic Preservation (OHP) announced today the selection of four cities to receive $160,000 in federal grants to assist local historic preservation programs. The cities of Benicia, Los Angeles, Riverside, and the city and county of San Francisco will receive funding from the 2017-2018 Certified Local Government Grant Program (CLG). The CLG encourages the direct participation of local governments across the country in the identification, evaluation, registration, and preservation of historic properties within their jurisdictions and promotes the integration of local preservation interests and concerns into local planning and decision-making processes. In California, the City of Los Angeles will use $40,000 to develop a historic context that focuses on resources associated with important programs, groups, organizations, institutions, and individuals that contributed significantly to promoting women’s rights and improving the lives of women in Los Angeles. The historic context will provide a clear framework to evaluate these resources and support historic designations. This important work contributes to the citywide historic context developed as part of SurveyLA. Other grant awardees include: 

City of Benicia: $40,000 - Funding will help update the Historic District Design Guidelines within the Downtown Historic Conservation Plan. The product will be user-friendly, visual rather than text based, and conform to the Secretary of the Interior’s Standards for Rehabilitation.

City of Riverside: $40,000 - Funding will help prepare a citywide context and survey of historic properties associated with the city’s Latino community. Other

activities include community meetings and the development of an audio/visual podcast and story map. 

City and County of San Francisco: $40,000 - The Chinese American Experience in San Francisco will be the topic of this historic context project. While San Francisco’s Chinatown has been the topic of many programs and publications, those accounts have not been comprehensive or citywide in scope. This context will remedy that deficiency.

The CLG is a partnership among local governments, OHP and the National Park Service (NPS), which is responsible for administering the National Historic Preservation Program. The State of California, through the OHP, is required to issue a minimum of 10 percent of its yearly share of federal funds received through the NPS Historic Preservation Fund Grants Program to certified local governments. These are local governments where the NPS has certified their preservation programs. The OHP awards certified local government grants on a competitive basis; the local government must provide a 40 percent match that can a combination of public funds, private funds, and allowable inkind donations. Additional information about the Certified Local Government Grant Program is available online at http://www.ohp.parks.ca.gov/clg. The Office of Historic Preservation is a division of California State Parks. Its mission, in partnership with the people of California and governmental agencies, is to preserve and enhance California's irreplaceable historic heritage as a matter of public interest.
