As Scarborough Education Foundation enters its 5th year, we look to celebrate and build on the success stories of past grant recipients. SEF's focus continues to be the recognition and awarding of grants to those educators who have creative and innovative ideas that will promote academic excellence but fall outside of traditional school budget considerations. We encourage parents of school age children to discuss SEF's grant making purposes with the teachers. If you know of initiatives that promote the notion of academic excellence and that have been implemented in schools of other family members, here in Maine or out of state, consider sharing those ideas with Scarborough educators. Please encourage Scarborough teachers to consider submitting a grant application to SEF so that we can consider making some of these educational ideas available in the Scarborough Schools! One way to help SEF achieve our goals is to attend SEF’s 4th annual Harvest Celebration on October 17th at Bayley’s Camping Resort. Details on this event appear below. A HUGE thanks goes out to all of our sponsors who help make this key fundraising event possible. Our most sincere thanks also goes to everyone in the Scarborough community who continues to support SEF and our mission! Jeff Ertman, SEF President

Operation Graduation Balloon was a huge success this year. With the help of many “family and friend” volunteers we delivered almost 500 balloons, raised over $1,500 toward SEF grant funding, and celebrated our 2015 Scarborough High School graduates in a very visible way. Congratulations to the Class of 2015 and a big thank you to all of our volunteers who helped deliver balloons!

SEF Awards 2015 Spring Grants! SEF awarded over $11,000 in grants this spring including funding for hand drumming instruments for classroom music at Scarborough Middle School, Project UKULELE! at Wentworth, and the initial funding for design and construction facilitation of the Wentworth Community Garden. The hand drumming instruments purchased will enrich the musical opportunities of over 270 students in general classroom music classes at the middle school by enabling them to play music in a large ensemble. Project UKULELE! will be an enrichment program offered during the school day for small groups of Wentworth students who are interested in learning how to play ukulele in a group. The group will be facilitated by Wentworth staff members and instructed by community member Duncan Perry. The Wentworth School Community Garden is currently in phase 1 of construction but will ultimately be an Outdoor Living Classroom including a traditional garden space, granite stadium seating, a center learning pavilion with white boards, beehive oven, and more. Teachers: start thinking about grant ideas for the upcoming cycle! The deadline to submit ideas to your building principal is October 19th. Applications are due to SEF on November 9th. Parents: Please encourage your child’s teacher to consider collaborating on a grant proposal! SEF Grants are a great way to enhance learning with truly innovative ideas!
Wentworth Community Garden SEF is pleased to announce funding of a portion of the design and construction costs for a community garden at the Wentworth Intermediate School. This grant provided seed capital for a multi-phase construction project that will ultimately result in a top-notch outdoor learning area for Scarborough students in grades 3-5.
