Center of Excellence in Diabetes and Endocrinology What is involved in an endocrine examination: Pediatric Endocrinology is a specialty dealing with hormones and their effects. A typical office visit may involve 1.Referral authorization and Medical Records from your referring primary care physician 2.Previous Growth Charts 3.Lab tests (if done already) 4.Bone age X-ray (if done already) preferably hand carried by the family as a film or CD as the physicians read the X-ray themselves to asses the development and project adult height. 5.Medical History, Height and Weight Measurements. 6.In addition to the routine physical exam, the visit may also include a thyroid and/or pubertal exam. The physical examination is non invasive but may be very detailed which include the pubertal examination of the child. No internal examination is done. Our physicians prefer that at least one of the parents stay in the room while the child is being examined. Some older children might prefer one of our medical assistants to be in the room instead of a family member. We will not perform a pubertal exam without a parent or a medical assistant physically present in the room. The reason for the pubertal exam is to assess the stage of puberty and also to look for rare conditions like congenital adrenal hyperplasia. Our physicians will usually explain the nature of the examination being done, so that there is less anxiety for the child and the family. Since no internal exam is performed and our physicians are very experienced,it is not painful and the whole examination is relatively very quick. PLEASE FEEL COMFORTABLE TO TALK TO OUR PHYSICIANS IF YOU HAVE ANY QUESTIONS OR SPECIAL NEEDS BEFORE THE EXAMINATION.
