School Council Chair’s Message Hello and welcome to Nellie Carlson School and School Council! The School Council works collaboratively with the Principal, Assistant Principal and Administrative team to inspire a passion for learning and belonging to a community. We are a community of parents supporting high levels of learning for all students. We believe teachers and parents together provide encouragement and support to inspire students to achieve. The School Council also sponsors activities such as parent information evenings, student workshops and staff recognition activities. Focus on Literacy Teachers at Nellie Carlson are committed to using research based strategies and programs to support the learning of all students. One of these programs that all teachers in Grades 1-6 use during their Language Arts time is the “Teacher’s College Reading Workshop” by Lucy Calkins. Our teachers ensure that all reading instruction provides students with a supportive environment and involves them in authentic reading experiences that focus on the strengths and needs of each individual student. Our philosophy is to allow students to spend an extended amount of time reading authentic texts that interest them on a daily basis and to provide opportunities to talk about literature. The ultimate goal of our literacy program at Nellie Carlson is always to develop life-long passionate readers and thoughtful writers.

Junior High Options LEADERSHIP fosters decision-making, communication, and take part in various communities (school, neighborhood, and world). The objective of this course is to focus on the principles of leadership, encouraging students to take steps to explore areas of personal interest including computer skills, marketing, business, photography, goal setting, event planning, and advertising. If you want to be a part of leadership, be ready to work hard and get things done. Joining leadership means you will be shaping our school for generations to come by planning school events like movie days, sports tournaments, and even school dances. In leadership you will learn to work collaboratively with others to make your ideas come to life. If you choose leadership, be ready to pitch your ideas to even the highest authority, like Mr. Madsen. You will also learn cool computer skills to create websites and presentations, and listening to cool and interesting guest speakers. This is why you should join the best option: Leadership. - Kayson
ART focuses on many forms of art throughout the semester, such as drawing, sculpting and painting. We use a variety of mediums to create feeling and meaning in our work. Students also spend time exploring the work of different artists to learn from their techniques and styles. Nellie Carlson students are encouraged to take risks and explore their creative side in their work and through a variety of Art Challenges.

FOODS is designed to give you experience in food preparation, as well as an introduction to kitchen safety, food safety, nutritional labelling and food groups. Students will learn safe and sanitary food handling procedures, equipment care, recipe cooperatively in teams, students will participate in a variety of cooking and baking projects.
Foods as your option. After you learn food safety like avoiding cuts, burns, and accidents, we learn how to cook. We cook a variety of foods like tacos, ingredients you may not have worked with before! You can impress your family and friends with your lit cooking skills, and then you get to eat it! HEALTHY LIVING combines getting active with nutrition, personal goal setting, and creating habits for a healthy lifestyle. Students will learn proper technique and exercises using free weights and machines in our weight room, and will explore a more! Students will receive coaching from a

DRAMA is all about Movement and Voice! We non-verbal scenes to improve both our verbal and non-verbal communication. The students get the opportunity to express themselves in dramatic monologues. We develop our skills through fun and challenging improvisation activities and exploring our creativity through the writing of one act plays. Drama is undoubtedly a fantastic option to take. It is a class where you can really express yourself and gain skits, monologues, and much more. Some days, you even get to play improvisational games in class that teach you about putting your voice out there, taking Drama class is a place where people will accept you for who you are and embrace your diversity. Students participate in positive group interactions. As a student in Drama, I can guarantee you it is a very creative and entertaining option. - Dema

OUTDOOR EDUCATION provides an opportunity for combining practical skills for the outdoors, like tying knots and ropes for climbing and learning how to and participate in cooperative games and activities to develop their leadership and group-work skills. Due to the nature of this class, students need to dress accordingly and be prepared for outdoor learning. Field trips are essential to the course curriculum and participants are expected to take part. Toasting marshmallows with friends. Scuba diving in snow with skis, feeling the thrill of being outside. These are all memories you’ll make in Outdoor Education. Led by our very own principal, learning survival skills in this option is something you will never forget. If you are looking for some adventure, wanting to make lasting friendships, and hoping to spend time in nature, then this is the option for you. - Margaret

Counseling Assistance / School Social Worker Nellie Carlson School can refer your child to the appropriate counseling resource for students to seek out help with social, emotional, and personal concerns.
