1/27/17 Dear Parents and Community Members: We are pleased to present you with the Annual Education Report (AER) which provides key information on the 2015-16 educational progress for New Buffalo High School. The AER addresses the complex reporting information required by federal and state laws. The school’s report contains information about student assessment, accountability, and teacher quality. If you have any questions about the AER, please contact Craig Stafford for assistance. The AER is available for you to review electronically by visiting the following web site https://goo.gl/NQwzxx, or you may review a copy in the main office at your child’s school. For the 2016-17 year, no new Priority or Focus schools were named; some Priority or Focus schools did exit their status because they met the exit criteria. New Reward schools were identified using school rankings and Beating the Odds information. A Focus school is one that has a large achievement gap between the highest and lowest achieving 30% of schools. A Priority school is one whose achievement and growth is in the lowest 5% of all schools in the state. A Reward school is one that has achieved one or more of the following distinctions: top 5% of schools on the Top-to-Bottom School Rankings, top 5% of schools making the greatest gains in achievement (improvement metric), or “Beating the Odds” by outperforming

the school’s predicted ranking and/or similar schools. Some schools are not identified with any of these labels. In these cases, no label is given. Our school, New Buffalo High School, was not given one of these labels by the State of Michigan. The key challenge for our school is to help the students in the bottom 30% in student achievement levels as measured by Annual Measurable Objectives and Student Growth Percentiles. We will continue to explore different ways to service our students. Currently we have the following interventions at the high school level: •

Essentials Classes—These classes tailor instruction to those students who would struggle in other placements.

Trimesters—Our trimester structure is a “built in” intervention that allows us to offer classes in each trimester for those students who may have failed a class in the preceding term.

Bonus Period—The heart of bonus period is to give students the opportunity to make-up work, go to teachers for help, extend lessons, etc.

Guided Academics—This class is to help students at all levels catch up on work, receive extra help, and receive supports from our faculty.

Writing Lab/Bison Virtual—A teacher works with middle and high school students who need extra academic supports in reading and writing.

SAT Prep—Class offered to help students improve their scores on the SAT.

Alternative School—New Buffalo works in conjunction with Buchanan Virtual School to offer an on-line curriculum for students who cannot succeed academically in a regular school setting.

Teachers are always available for students before and after school as well.

Students who cannot show progress with significant interventions can be referred for special education services. An Individual Educational Plan (IEP) will be developed to help the student reach appropriate levels of growth and

progress. These services include resource rooms combined with general education classes. In most cases, classroom instruction is provided by the general education teachers with special education teacher support, and constant progress monitoring. The students follow a general education curriculum, and the Common Core State of Michigan Standards. The IEP process includes the determination of supplemental services, accommodations, and modifications for success in general education. Ancillary services are available for students who qualify. These services may include speech/language therapy, occupational therapy, and/or physical therapy. New Buffalo High School is also building a STEAM curriculum in partnership with Dr. Carla Johnson, Professor of Science Education, Provost Fellow for P12 STEM in the College of Education at Purdue University. Our STEAM curriculum will revolve around the themes of Global Awareness, Cause and Effect, Optimizing the Human Experience, Our Community, Media, and Innovation. We are also looking to add new electives in many departments. New Buffalo will also partner with the Michigan City Career and Technical Center to offer courses in career and technical education. Also, New Buffalo is forming a partnership with Purdue Northwest to offer college credit course to juniors with specific GPA requirements. State law requires that we also report additional information. 1. All students who live within the New Buffalo School District and attend grades 9-12 are assigned to New Buffalo High School. In addition, students who live within Berrien County may apply for acceptance through the school of choice program. New students to our school are assigned a schedule that is grade and credit appropriate. Students who have an IEP will have his or her services applied to our program. 2. The current school improvement plan has been reshaped to reflect processes and activities to help students reach a level of 85% achievement on all areas of the MSTEP by 2022. 3. We have no specialized schools in our district. 4. To learn about our curriculum, parents and community members can access information at www.michigan.gov/mde and choose K-12 curriculum. 5. New Buffalo High School’s SAT average score is 1040, ACT average

score is 23.4, and AP average score is 3.426. 6. We offer three scheduled parent/teacher conferences, and we routinely have at least 85% of our parents represented. 7. a. The number and percent of postsecondary enrollments (dual enrollments) Students 7 32 6 21 19 34 9 14 10 3
