My literary Story

I was born in Merritt Island Florida only forty-five minutes from Orlando right next to Kennedy Space Center. I believe the reason why I turned into a science loving nerdy person is because of my Dad and Mom, they played a huge role in making me the person I am today, because they were major literacy sponsors. My dad gave me the ability

to learn science. Just like like how Alexie’s dad brought him home

books to read, my dad would bring home Science journals and magazines. He also allowed me to buy my own television where I

could watch the science and discovery channel on. My Mom would help me read these journals and magazines. We had a deal that I would read to my Mom for thirty minutes every night. Then she would read for thirty minutes if I did not understand a word she would tell me the definition. Some people are never able to see a rocket launch. In Merritt Island, seeing a rocket go up was a regular yet awe inspiring. Every time the house shook during a rocket launch I would run outside to watch, I remember my Dad and I would go up onto the roof at night just to see the rocket launches. My Dad was a civil engineer and now he sells software for Autodesk. He was a very big influence on me, just like Alexie when he says “My father loved books, and since I loved my father with an aching devotion, I decided to love books as well,” (Alexie 129) I loved my Dad and he loved science and engineering so in turn, I wanted to learn all about science and I wanted to be an engineer.

My dad traveled a lot because he was a salesman for Autodesk. But whenever he came home he would always bring back some miscellaneous goodies for my sisters and me. My sisters normally got toys or trinkets. Sometimes my sisters would get a Webkinz or some other sort of toys, but I, on the other hand, would always get a science magazine, journal or some other sort of Formatted: Highlight

I started mowing lawns and doing chores around the house until I finally saved up enough money to buy the television. I went to Goodwill with my dad and bought an old cathode ray television and a sound system. Instead of watching cartoons like other kids my age, I drooled over watching Discovery Channel and Science channel. Learning was very important to me I could watch very boring science shows or I would even watch shows like Finding Bigfoot because I thought they were funny. From watching the glorified engineers in Myth Busters I really wanted to do what they did. When I went to high school I joined my school's engineering academy where we learned 3d modeling and many other engineering skills. I loved the academy because we would tour engineering companies like Craig Technologies and Northrop Grumman. I got to meet real engineers who had worked on the shuttle and new rocket programs. From being around these engineers so often I was able to mushfake, or fake a Discourse, through their lexis making it easier to read science journals. Also, I started going on Google News every day and reading every article that interested me. Because of my Dad, I am at school trying to become a mechanical engineer so I can help people, and perhaps inspire other children to love science the same way I do.

Even though I read all the time I was never good at reading comprehension in class. I always dreaded the days when we had to take benchmark tests because I would always do really well in math but horrible in reading. I probably would have been held back if it wasn’t for my Mom and my teacher Mrs.Chase. In first and second grade I was in a multi-age class. My teacher was Mrs.Chase. She really helped me understand how to pull pertinent information from texts. I stayed after class for thirty minutes three times a week. We would read from my textbook. She would have me underline important information and then have me summarize and find the separate parts such as the claim, the writer's opinions, or facts were given. It was like pulling teeth for me but at least I didn’t get held back. My mom along with my Dad and Mrs.Chase were big literacy sponsors. To help improve my reading, writing, and vocabulary my mom and I made a deal. I would read for thirty minutes out loud to my Mom and then she would read to me for thirty minutes. This equated to bedtime stories for me. This really helped me with my love for science because a lot of the time I couldn’t understand the vocabulary they used and my mom would explain the words and help define them. From that year on, I never had problems with reading comprehension and understanding text. When it came time to take the standard college placement tests, my Mom gave me a study book for the ACT and one for the SAT. so that I could get into a good engineering college.

Overall, I feel a lot like Alexie in some sorts. My dad supplied me with an area and the means to really learn and appreciate science. My mom was a big literary sponsor she helped me when I needed it and expanded my vocabulary. My mom and dad really gave me all the tools I needed to get into a great college and excel.
