Whitecaps, Wind, and Wins Persisting through high winds and waves on the Detroit River, Northville Rowing Club demonstrated their commitment to persevere under tough conditions. At the Wyandotte High Schools Rowing Regatta on May 7, held at BASF Waterfront Park, Northville Rowing Club’s crews advanced nine boats to the finals, which were delayed and ultimately cancelled due to poor water and wind conditions. Continuing their dominance by capturing first and second place in Men’s Doubles, senior Ashwath Muruganand and junior Jake Gourd took the gold medal in the final, with junior Frank Williams and sophomore Ryan Gourd rowing a close second place for the silver. Likewise, junior Jackie Cole had a solid second place finish, taking the silver medal in the Women’s Singles event. Northville rowers J. Gourd, Williams, R. Gourd, and juniors J.T. Kerns and Coxswain Andrew Robinson took home the bronze medal by coming in third in the Men’s Junior 4+ event. Following their surging success, novice crews have continued to reach the finals this season. Taking first place in the Men’s Novice 8+ event were sophomores Brett Somerville, Aaron Shute, C.J. Daniels, freshmen Mitchell Encelewski, Andrew Crowell, Nick Cemalovic, juniors Quentin Baur and Yosef Mansi, led by freshman Coxswain Elyssa Daguanno. As rough river conditions reached their peak, the Men’s Novice 4+ crew of Somerville, Encelewski, Shute, Daniels, and freshman Coxswain Nicholas Bhandari also seized first place just as the regatta was called off. Also competing in the last Men’s Novice 4+ race of the day were Crowell, Cemalovic, Baur, Mansi, and Robinson as coxswain. With the regatta cancelling before all finals could be completed, junior Maya Sankaran and sophomore Belle Cureton gained a gold medal with their fastest time in the Women’s Doubles heat. However, Muruganand’s scheduled participation in the Men’s Singles final was thwarted when the remaining finals of the day were called off. With the regatta cut short, Coach Katie Larder expressed her appreciation for the team’s tenacity by saying, “Thank you for a great rowing day.” Next the Northville Rowing Club heads to Ohio to complete in a two-day regatta at the Midwest Scholastic Rowing Championship that will take place on May 14-15.
