Word from the Chief Principal I

Ms Mary Muthoka

I

take this opportunity to welcome our reader on our first issue of the Informer Newsletter. As you read through the pages of this newsletter, you will learn about our wonderful students, our School, and get a feel of the vibrancy and strength of our institute. Mombasa Technical Training Institute is located in the coastal town of Mombasa. It was established in 1950 as a Technical High School. Upon the introduction of the 8-4-4 system of education, it was elevated to a middle level technical college in 1984 to provide technical training for the middle level man power for both the private and public sectors of the economy. The trainees in the institute are drawn from fresh secondary school leavers, graduates from other tertiary institutions, employees on parttime release basis and the informal (Jua Kali) sector. Mombasa Technical Training Institutes is a center of excellence in Training, Research and Innovation and is committed to providing knowledge, skills and technology required to steer its students towards achieving the economic, social and political goals in the global

market. We have seven academic departments which are: Mechanical Engineering Department, Information Technology Department, Hospitality Department, Business Department, Pure and Applied Sciences Department, Medical Sciences Department, secretarial Department and Electrical Department. I hope to express the passion and enthusiasm that both staff and students bring to all that they do here, making Mombasa Technical Training Institute such a wonderful place to learn. As a Learning Institute we have a strong focus on student academic progress and achievement. This is a popular and growing Learning Institution and each year students join us from different schools within the Country and sometimes from well beyond too. When you join us, you can be assured we will invest time in you. We will give you all the support and encouragement you need to achieve the success you deserve and to create the future you want for yourself. We'll treat you with respect, take your views seriously and encourage you to be creative and contribute to the wider community. Our students' success cannot be defined by qualifications alone but are also equipped with extra curriculum activities. To achieve this, students are encouraged to participate in the extensive array of opportunities which exist beyond the classroom. Many opportunities exist in musical

festivals and drama and the school offers a large range of visits. Student leadership is also incorporated within our objectives. The Institute plays a central role in organization of our thriving Student Council which helps to ensure that the views of our students are represented. Mombasa Technical Training Institutes is exhilarating place to learn. I hope that part of these will is shown through pictures in the Newsletter. I thank you for taking time out to read this Newsletter and share in our vision. I would warmly welcome you to come and visit to experience for yourself all that Mombasa Technical Training Institute has to offer. Mombasa Technical Training Institute is ISO Certified. Despite the trainees getting disappointed of failing to clinch the first position, the team did well at the nationals and managed to get the title of the best scripted play. The forum which took place in the afternoon was orderly and constructive. Various issues were discussed at length. The chief principal Ms Mary Muthoka who was accompanied by several Heads of Department assured the students that all their issues will be addressed as a matter of priority “Iassure and promise you that all the issues that you have raised will be looked into and feedback given as soon as possible”said the Chief Principal Ms Mary Muthoka. story by Choreh Edwin

a conducive environment for studies. This was said by Francis Musyoka, a member of SOMTTI committee at MTTI. During election he promised to start a project that would ensure institute compound was clean. In the year 2014 mid July, SOMTTI initiated a recycling project which ensured placement of dustbins in classes, common resting areas and corridors. The result of the initiative was positive. Litter within the

environment reduced by 98%. The committee with the aid of institute management went beyond the institute and took to the streets. In Mid September 2014 an event was organized to clean Tononoka Street. This showed the extent at which the institute and SOMTTI would go to ensure conducive environment for the students. There have been recent complaints of the odor from garbage track just opposite engineering block and restaurant. Students claim they find it difficult to concentrate in class because the odor is

irritating. They looked forward to the institutional management acting to ensure the track was relocated somewhere else. On the other hand SOMTTI will open campaigns for realization of importance of a clean environment. story by Loraine.
