MOCCA

12 JULY 2016 – Embargoed till 13 JULY 2016    MOCCA to stay put    After two years of uncertainty over the future of its site MOCCA is staying put. MOCCA’s stay of execution  was announced by Chief Minister Andrew Barr after intense lobbying from community groups including the  Kingston Barton Residents’ Group, the Griffith Narrabundah Community Association and the Inner South  Canberra Community Council.     MOCCA’s Director Mrs Robby McGarvey welcomed the decision saying, ‘it will enable the childcare centre  to continue to build its excellent learning environment and community culture’. Mrs McGarvey said  ‘MOCCA’s community erupted in cheers when Mr Barr confirmed on June 30 that his government no longer  required the centre to relocate’.     While expressing delight at the Government’s decision Mrs McGarvey calls on the ACT Government to  honour its 2014 promise to upgrade the centre facilities. Mrs McGarvey said ‘MOCCA will need ongoing  financial assistance from the government to meet and exceed the National Quality Framework Standards. It  would be a shame to reaffirm MOCCA's longstanding home in Manuka only to be faced with an  unmanageable debt through much needed renovations’.    ‘While we operate from an older style purpose‐built government facility we have lovingly transformed it  into a stimulating learning haven for children, families and early childhood professionals.’  Mrs McGarvey  noted that one family described MOCCA as ‘a slice of childcare heaven’.     Mrs McGarvey announced ‘MOCCA has two reasons to celebrate – first it is staying on the site it has  occupied for 53 years, and second – MOCCA has been assessed as exceeding standards in every quality  criterion, awarding us an overall rating of the Exceeding National Quality Standards for Early Childhood  Education and Care and School Age Care.’    MOCCA’s future is very positive, with demand for places increasing. There are currently 200+ children on  the waiting list with occupancy rates steadily climbing to full capacity in recent times.    With the three to four year age group seeing the highest need and usage MOCCA is excited to be looking  into the possible interim use of a small solar‐powered demountable for the preschool room and to spread  the under fours between the two larger rooms.    Mrs McGarvey said ‘a big thanks must go to the families and our excellent educators who stuck with  MOCCA, coming each day to share another day ever hopeful of a positive outcome for this brilliant place  we call MOCCA. Thanks to their support, persistence and unwavering commitment MOCCA now has some  certainty of its future.’    Minister Rattenbury, Minister for Education will be presenting MOCCA with their Final National Quality  Assessment certificate at a celebration party at MOCCA at 30 Flinders Way Manuka at 10.30AM on  Wednesday 13 July.     Contact: Robby McGarvey (Director) 0410157296  Website: www.manukachildcare.com.au/home   Facebook: @MoccaChildcare  Twitter: @MoccaChildcare
