What we are learning in….
This week in Guided Reading we are working on making predictions, learning unknown words, answering comprehension questions based on our books, and practicing our reading strategies for the week, “Looking through the word.” Group 1- Turtles This book is about what turtles look like, what they do, and what they eat. Vocabulary Words: can, come, do, from, have Reading Strategies-Picture Cue, Initial Sound, and looking at the ending of the word.
This week in 3rd and 5th Math, we continue to work on money. We are working on coin identification (Penny, Nickel, Dime, Quarter) and their values. We also are working on adding different coins up to $1.00.

We also collect data and interpret bar graphs daily in Calendar. We gather data in the morning about the weather and compare our graphs for each type of weather. In 4th grade math we are continuing our unit on fractions. We add different mixed numbered fractions, change improper fractions to mixed numbers.

Writer’s Workshop
This week we are continuing to work on our non-fiction writing unit about Animals at the Denver Zoo. Each student will be writing a report on the animal they choose and create a powerpoint presentation. This week’s research was on the animal’s classification, appearance, habitat. Also, we continue to work on writing five complete sentences with correct capitalization and punctuation.

Group 3-Seasons in the Kelp Forest explores how kelp grows in the sea during the four seasons and the different animals that live in and around the kelp. Vocabulary Words: bladders, abundant, canopy, kelp, seaweed Reading Strategy-Reading for meaning During Read Aloud we have been talking about main character, character traits, telling the setting of the story, and working on problem/solution. Common Core Standards: Common Core Standards 5th Grade Extended Evidence: V. Refer to details and examples in Convert equivalent amount of a text when explaining money. what the text says explicitly and when drawing inferences from the text. (CCSS: RL. 4.1) Describe in depth a character, setting, or event in a story or drama, drawing on specific details in the text
