Mental Health Candidate Permit Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) I just completed my degree requirements and want to start accruing post-degree hours. Do I need a license and, if so, what type of license? If you are working to accrue post-degree hours to qualify for a mental health license, you must: 1. Hold a Candidate Permit (LPCC, PSYC, MFTC) or hold an LSW; OR 2. Register as a psychotherapist; OR 3. Work in an exempt facility (please refer to the Office of Behavioral Health for exempt facilities) Do I have to apply for the candidate permit for the board under which I am seeking licensure? You are encouraged to hold a candidate permit with the Board that issues the license for which you are applying/accruing hours. For example, if you want to apply for an MFT you should hold an MFTC permit. Hours accrued under the supervision of a person that is not licensed in the profession you intend to practice may not count. For example, if you want to become an LCSW, you may not be supervised by an LPC. These requirements vary by profession so please refer to the Mental Health Practice Act and Board Rules for the Board that issues the license you seek. If you are currently licensed, also check the Board rules for that license type. For example, if you are an LSW, but want to become an LPC, check the supervision rules for Social Work and Professional Counseling. When can I start accruing my post-degree hours? Post degree hours can start only AFTER the applicant has met all the requirements for a degree, even if the degree has not yet been conferred through a graduation ceremony or the issuance of official transcripts. You may not practice (or accrue post-degree hours) until a permit, license or registration is issued and active. Note: If you are practicing in an exempt facility, your degree must be conferred in order to start accruing post-degree hours.
