September 3, 2009 Dear Hilary, It is with great pleasure that I extend my heartfelt congratulations to you and your committee, on behalf of the members of the Goan Institute, Nairobi, on the occasion of the RGI Centenary. As you know the Goan Institute celebrated its centenary in 2005, and still exists as a premier social club in Nairobi. It is very heartwarming to see that this Centennial Anniversary is being celebrated, although away from home, to commemorate an historical social and sporting institution and people in Kenya. The Hon. Sir Winston Churchill, late Prime Minister of Great Britain, said in a message to the President of the GI, J.M. Campos, in 1907 “The British Empire is big enough to shelter the law-abiding and peaceful Goan pioneer, a good citizen of Portugal and to protect him in all his activities in the British empire either a Government employee or otherwise” Coming from a Kenyan pioneer family myself, I truly appreciate the effort to remember and celebrate our ‘roots’ and the great people who not only came to Kenya but left a rich religious, cultural, social and sporting heritage. While Goan representation is rapidly declining in Kenya, we who still live here fly the flag with great pride! This celebration is a fitting tribute to all those who served in the Railways in the early days – Well done! Viva RGI! Viva Kenya! -All the very Best!

Message from Past President of The Goan Institute, Nairobi Dear Hilary, As a past President of the Goan Institute ( later the Nairobi Institute ) I send you and your committee my very best wishes on the celebration of the Railway Goan Institute Centenary. Our institutions were comrades in sports and social activities that provided the means for us to take part in. Members from each of our teams faced each other with passion and determination, but when the game was over we enjoyed a drink or two at either club. The new nation of Kenya, and the Railways, in particular, facing economic times could not support a Railway Institute in the early 1970s, hence when it closed down we were pleased to welcome former members of the Railway Institute to our club. A Centenary celebration is an occasion to look back with pride at our forbearers who, in forming our clubs, played a part in founding the nation and, in many ways, made us who we are today. I salute you and all those attending the Centenary Celebrations.
Very Sincerely, Oscar D'Souza- Mississauga - Ontario
