This subcommittee coordinated the Complete Streets workshop held earlier in the day. This included a field trip to the SDOT Henderson Street Project. The overall feedback indicated the workshop was successful. D. McDonald noted that we had key volunteers helping to arrange the workshop including: Dan Dawson (coordinating with SDOT personnel), Ram Nunna (preparing the draft Powerpoint for the SDOT presentation), Scott Wolf (preparing the handouts, exhibits and revising the Powerpoint), Four Team Leaders: Larry Sutherland, Jerry Sudimick, Richard Coakley, and John LaPlante, and Jim Gattis kept our workshop information current on the USS website. Thank you volunteers!!! Brian Ray provided a summary of how the Geometry Safety and Efficiency committee was transitioning to the Technical Committee under the proposed AFB10 Committee structure. Brian asked how many people were attending the subcommittee meeting due to interest in CSD in particular. Three people were in attendance for that reason. He explained how CSD was not going to be subcommittee any longer, but that CSD is still important to the committee. Much of the CSD work will be through the CSD Task Force. Brian indicated that AFB10 will need to provide a representative to The CSD task force as our previous representative, Nick Stamadadis has rotated off of the AFB10 committee. 2008 Proposed Annual Meeting Workshop Workshop title is “Future of Geometric Design and Graduate Student Summaries”. We have requested a Sunday 1/2 day workshop that does not overlap with other AFB10 sponsored events. Graduate Student “Call For Abstracts” have been prepared and distributed to about 70 US universities and an additional 30+/international universities. Eric Donnell indicated he could arrange to have CUTC send through their email system. Volunteer Opportunity: Subcommittee should send a reminder out in about August/September. Volunteer Opportunity: Abstract review in October. Jerry Sudimick and Richard Coakley indicated availability. Could still use several other volunteers. The workshop will require someone to coordinate the speaker/presenter check in, graduate student group photo, and setting up the presentations on one computer. Richard Coakley Volunteered to do this. Scott Wolf volunteered to gather all powerpoint presentations for the workshop and sessions (Eric’s research session, this workshop, and the Evolution of Design call for papers session). This will then be uploaded to the TRB webserver. The other portion of the workshop will focus on the new AFB10 structure and get the word out to those interested in Geometric Design how the committee will be moving forward to support/advance geometric design. A proposed format of the workshop was distributed. There will be several presentations during the workshop. The following presenters are needed: • Committee restructuring overview (Brian Ray) • How we will support research (Eric Donnell) • Update on our Liaison activities (possibly Larry Sutherland, NOTE: he has not been asked yet).

Overview of AASHTO (by one of our AASHTO members) Opportunities to be involved/engaged with the committee (to be determined – volunteer opportunity) • Consensus Building, Q&A, Motivation on Geometric Design Research (to be determined, could be David McDonald, but is a volunteer opportunity) Volunteer Opportunity – Prepare and distribute workshop handout materials 2008 Proposed Annual Meeting Session Call for papers was written and provided to TRB for distribution. Title is “The Future and Evolution of Geometric Design and Design Efficiencies” AFB10 is the lead sponsor. The Operational Effects of Geometrics Committee and the Visualization Committee have cosponsored this call for papers and session. David recommended that our subcommittee members review the papers as it is our “call for papers” Volunteer Opportunity. AFB10 will be providing the Moderator for this Podium Session. If there is anyone that needs to be on the TRB program to obtain travel approval for January’s meeting, please see David McDonald as this could be an opportunity. Scott Wolf volunteered to obtain Powerpoints and upload to TRB web board. We will be assembling a team to attend the session and read the papers. This team will identify any key research needs identified by the papers and presentations. We would like to develop new research problem statements that can be passed on to our AFB10 Research Subcommittee. We would also like to develop one or more synthesis topics and syntheses from these same papers. We should have a 3-4 member team for this task. Nick Stamadadis volunteered to coordinate the team. Mark Taylor volunteered to be on this team. We need 1-2 more volunteers. Eric Donnell’s call for papers session and the General Paper’s session/poster session (2 separate sessions) We will be assembling a team to attend each session and read the papers. This team will identify any key research needs identified by the papers and presentations. We would like to develop new research problem statements that can be passed on to our AFB10 Research Subcommittee. We would also like to develop one or more synthesis topics and syntheses from these same papers. We should have a 3-4 member team for this task. Volunteers are needed. 2008 Mid Year Utilize the mid year meeting to prepare for a future 2009 meeting with AASHTO. Evaluate the existing research topics we have generated, incorporate the additional 20+/- that Joel Leisch has available, and review Williamsburg breakout items. What do we think are the high priority? We should have a meeting with our AASHTO Members on our committee that are active in the AASHTO subcommittee on Design (Bart, Resa, and Jim). Eric Donnell and I should participate to determine if there are some AASHTO identified needs and to keep our folks in the loop regarding our desired meeting with the AASHTO subcommittee.

Other Items Jim Gattis spent some time discussing the Urban Streets Symposium (USS). Where should we move forward with USS? Do we want to continue with it? How do we get more participation outside of AFB10 and AHB65 committees? Do we have someone with good contacts to the other committees/groups (such as bikes, peds, ADA, transit, etc.) that can get them more actively participating with the USS. Should we hold USS in conjunction with another group’s planned meeting (example given was ITE district meeting)? A survey will be sent to this year’s participants to generate ideas on how to move forward with USS and if there is a benefit to attend the USS. Should the focus of the USS be broadened from Urban to also include freeway. TRB workload has placed more burden on the organizing volunteers. How can we improve this? Should the format change to less presentations and more workshops? We need 2 years to prepare for an USS conference. The next one is tentatively slated for 2012. (note this was noted as 2011 in the joint AFB10/AHB65 meeting the next day). Should we consider having this in conjunction with an international meeting in 2015? If in conjunction with an international meeting, should the length of the conference be adjusted (add more days such that half of the program has an urban focus)? We should revisit our AFB10 research priorities to see which have been met and which are still open. We should sort our open research topics into the four new technical groups of this subcommittee. Our subcommittee needs to identify ways to move forward the research needs. Do we sponsor workshops in mid year 2008, annual meeting 2009, or mid year 2009? We need to update current research or research in progress (RIP). Did the research cover all the items we had noted in our research problem statements. Did selected research projects miss something that we need to continue to promote? We also need to review not funded NCHRP projects, Synthesis topics related to design and see if they need to be promoted/supported by our subcommittee. These projects/topics should be grouped into one of the four proposed technical subgroups of this committee: METHODOLOGY, FREEWAYS & INTERCHANGES, HIGHWAYS, AND STREETS & INTERSECTIONS. Additional volunteers are needed. Each subcommittee member should keep an eye out for new technical issues or emerging topics related to geometric design and bring them to our subcommittee’s attention At our January 2008 subcommittee meeting we need to be prepared to recommend 2009 annual meeting activities we plan to sponsor or hold to our full committee. This would include call for papers, workshops, and poster sessions. 2009 possibilities include, but are not limited to: possible emerging topics or activities, HSM needs, HSDM needs, graduate students session, sustainability in design (we need to understand this as it seems to becoming more prevalent)
