i s u

o n ig

(c) How and why do you think Britain and Europe succeeded in overcoming the Asian empires.

. w w

A.1.(c) IT revolution – that it is nothing less than a seismic shift in how the world economy works and that India may be especially well placed to take advantage of it. But then, economic power comes to countries in unexpected ways and at unexpected times, and it is usually enabled by new technologies. When Europe began invading eastern shores, the Asian empires were horrified – they had regarded them as little more than impoverished barbarians. Europe‟s growth in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries was a result of technological advances in building large, multi-masted ships that could sail in the rough, open seas. The rise of new navigation tools –better maps, sextants and chronometers – also allowed explorers to chart out better sea routes, giving Europe access to colonies, slaves, silk and gold.

w

(d) Why was IT an easy option for a start up entrepreneur in India? Discuss.

A.1.(d) IT was literally the only option for a start-up entrepreneur to begin a business without political access or capital.

A slow-growing economy also ended up diverting much of its huge talent into a small but burgeoning IT sector.

A leased computer- these firms got by on very little.

A data line – over which they sold Indian brainpower to the outside world. India thus literally stumbled on to services growth, one that happens to be the emerging story for the international economy.

Different ways in which the internet can help students learn:-

Internet is the invention of modern and high technology science. It provides us amazing facility of searching any information from any corner of the world by anyone. We can connect more than one computer to each other using this internet in order to easily access information from any connected computer from one place. Using internet we can send any big or small message, information very quickly within seconds to anyone’s computer, mobile or other digital device like tablets, PC, etc. It is a vast storage of information as it has more than billions of running websites related to the domestic, business, academic, governmental, etc. We can say it is a network of networks.

b . te

i s u

o n ig

s g lo

. w w

Advantage

There are many advantages of internet.

w

We can make donations online. We can send and receive information across large matrix of computer systems. Through email service, we can send messages for both business and personal purposes. Internet has opened doors for virtual online offices. During the festive season, we don’t need to visit crowed stores to buy our stuff. We can make online purchases at a bargain price. We can send birthday greeting cards through the internet. Before making any purchases, we can check online for user reviews of the products that we intend to buy.

We can use social media applications on our personal computer and mobile devices. In this way, we can reconnect to our old school friends. We can gather information for new job openings. We can also apply online for jobs. We can earn online by doing freelancing jobs, selling online, completing surveys, affiliate marketing, etc. We can also sell old items that are of no use for us. During idle time, we can listen to music or watch a video.

Disadvantages The disadvantages of internet are: We often tend to purchase those extra items that we rarely need. Such purchases are a wastage of money.

m o .c

The internet is not free. Sometimes, it hurts while paying bills.

t o p

There are hundreds of vendors selling products of various brands. We get confused with too many choices. The transaction cost levied by the payment gateway providers decreases the margin of the online sellers.

s g lo

Too many contradictory review leads us nowhere.

b . te

The physical distance among loved ones is increasing.

i s u

Somewhere the emotional connect between people are missing.

o n ig

We feel helpless when the internet connection is down. We always remain engaged with many online activities such as checking emails, socializing, chatting, online shopping, business-deals, etc. We don’t get time to rest.

. w w

Our life is moving at the pace of internet. We seldom spare few moments of peace for us.

w

Uses of Internet

The key to success of Internet is the information. The better the quality, the more usage of Internet operations. Large volume of Information: Internet can be used to collect information from around the world. This information could relate to education, medicine, literature, software, computers, business, entertainment, friendship, tourism, and leisure. People can search for information by visiting the home page of various search engines such as Google, Yahoo, Bing, etc. News and Journals: All the newspapers, magazines and journals of the world are available on the Internet. With the introduction of broadband and advanced mobile telecommunication technologies such as 3G (third generation) and 4G (fourth generation), the speed of internet service has increased tremendously. A person can get the latest news about the world in a matter of few seconds.

Electronic Mode of Communication: Internet has given the most exciting mode of communication to all. We can send an E-mail (the short form of Electronic Mailing System) to all the corners of the world. Chatting: There are many chatting software that can be used to send and receive real-time messages over the internet. We can chat with our friend and relatives using any one of the chatting software. Social Networking: People can connect with old friends on social networking sites. They can even chat with them when they are online. Social networking sites also allow us to share pictures with others. We can share pictures with our loved ones, while we are on a vacation. People are even concluding business deals over these social networking sites such as Facebook. Online Banking (Net-Banking): The use of internet can also be seen in the field of banking transactions. Many banks such as HSBC, SBI, Axis Bank, Hdfc Bank, etc. offers online banking facilities to its customers. They can transfer funds from one account to another using the net-banking facility.

m o .c

E-commerce: Internet is also used for carrying out business operations and that set of operations is known as Electronic Commerce (E-commerce). Flipkart is the largest e-commerce company in India. The rival, Amazon, is giving stiff competition to Flipkart.

t o p

Mobile commerce: Mobile commerce (also M-Commerce) refers to the commercial transaction that takes place over the mobile internet. Using the mobile internet technology, many companies have introduced mobile version of websites and mobile apps, to promote and sell their products. Customers can simply browse several through the products and buy online through mobile internet.

s g lo

b . te

Mobile wallet: Many companies offer the service of mobile wallet to its customers. Users must have a smartphone and internet connection to use this service. Users can pay an amount into their mobile wallet, which they can use to make online payment such as bill payments, recharges, etc.

i s u

o n ig

Entertainment: Apart from a major source of knowledge and information, the utility of Internet in the field of entertainment cannot be undermined. We can visit various video sites and watch movies and serials at our convenient time.

. w w

Technology of the Future: Internet is the technology of future. In the times to come, offices would be managed at distant places through Internet.

Q.5. If you were evaluated in a group discussion what are the factors that you think the evaluator will assess you on. A.5. Group discussion is rapidly becoming one of the most widely used forms of interpersonal communication in modern society. In the world of business, managers may spend up to 50% of their time in meetings. Public meetings may be held to discuss the budget proposed by a school board or a city's new zoning laws. Students may be asked to carry out assignments in small groups.

The Nature of Group Discussion

Group discussion occurs any time three or more people meet to solve a common problem, arrive at a decision, or answer a question of mutual interest. The idea of cooperation is basic to discussion. It means that the members of the group must share a desire to achieve a common goal. They may not all wish to achieve that goal in exactly the same way, but they must be willing to devote their energies to reaching a group solution, rather than promoting their own individual agendas, solutions, or opinions. This does not mean that there won't be differences of opinion in the group discussion, rather it means that each member must enter the group with an open mind, genuinely prepared to listen as well as to argue.

Factors Affecting Group Discussion

Size of the group

m o .c

t o p

Cliques Within a Group: A clique consists of a few of the group members who become separate group within the larger group.

s g lo

Personal Goals of Members: People join groups to achieve some kind of common goal.

b . te

This goal may be to make a joint decision, to solve a mutual problem, or to share information.

i s u

o n ig

Physical Environment: Groups should meet in a suitable environment considering temperature, noise, and visual distractions.

. w w

w

Seating Arrangement: Proxemics should be considered when setting up a group discussion.

Time for Discussion: Avoid setting group discussions just before lunch or at the end of a busy day.

Following are some of the things which you must take care off to succeed in the GD.

Read voraciously Make a habit of reading voraciously on every subject. This will keep you ready for any topic for a discussion in GD Your knowledge is your most important weapon in a discussion.

Initiate the discussion

Most of us have a misconception that initiating the discussion would give you an advantage over others. It does give you an advantage but only if you know the subject well and have something relevant to start the discussion otherwise it is a disadvantage. For e.g. When a group was given a subject “Is Capital punishment right?” some members of the group heard the word punishment and jumped at starting the discussion with out understanding the meaning of Capital Punishment. The evaluators kept hearing for 2 minutes after which they intervened and asked the group if they knew the meaning of Capital Punishment. Not to say, the members who initiated were quite looking at each other’s faces. That is when a quite member of the group got up and explained the meaning of the topic. From this incidence, you can easily tell who must have succeeded in the GD, the ones who initiated the discussion or the one who explained the topic and gave it a right direction. They say, “Speaking just for the sake of speaking is noise”. So, don’t create noise in the GD rather make some useful and resourceful contributions to get noticed in the discussion.

m o .c

Speak politely and pleasantly

t o p

As you speak make sure that you do not speak at the top of your voice. You should be audible and clear. Remember that you are participating in a discussion which is different from a speech given out by the leaders in their rallies. Even if you disagree with the other’s point of view, disagree politely. Use phrases like, I would like to disagree a bit here, I am sorry but I think I have a slightly different point of view here.

Be précised

s g lo

b . te

Abstain from using irrelevant information and data from your talks during a GD Speak precisely so that others also get a chance to put across their point of view.

o n ig

i s u

Acquire and apply knowledge

Stay attentive to the ideas put forward by other group members and keep writing the important points discussed during the GD As you get a chance to speak, put forward your views about the topic. You can also agree or disagree with other’s ideas, based on your knowledge about the subject.

. w w

w

Agree with the right

Don’t take a stand on either extreme when the discussion begins. It might happen that you get convinced by other’s argument and want to change your stand. Respect other’s opinion as well and agree with what is right, even if you initially had a different opinion.

Speak confidently Maintain your confidence as you speak. Establish eye contact with other members of the group and do not let your voice tremble.

Moderate Try to moderate the discussion if any arguments arise. This is necessary to ensure that the group doesn’t wander from the goal of the GD

Use positive body language Your body language should not demonstrate dominance or low self confidence. Show your interest in the discussion through your gestures like bending forward a bit, nodding your head.

Be a team player Last but not the least, be a team player as this is a group activity. Be comfortable with the group members and vice versa.

Q.7. Write short notes on the followin following:

(a) Written versus oral communication unication(b) An effective meeting(c) Barriers to communicat munication A.7.(a) Written versus oral communica munication

Written communication is the process of communication in which messages or information is exchanged or communicated within sender and receiver through written form. On the other hand, oral communication is the process of communication in which messages or information is exchanged or communicated within sender and receiver through the word of mouth. The differences between oral and written communication are of followers:

A.7.(b) An effective meeting

s g lo

A group of friends carries on a conversation for a couple of hours. No one remembers how they ended up talking about the lives of penguins in the Antarctic when they had started out discussing home computers. Unless the friends were trying to accomplish something more than interesting conversation, they did no harm. When business meetings resemble this gathering of friends, however, few decisions are made and much time is wasted. It takes skill and follow-through to conduct effective meetings.

Meetings can be useful. Workers can learn directly rather than through the grapevine about new personnel policies or participate in decisions affecting them. Subordinates can keep supervisors and co-workers informed of new developments or conditions encountered on the job. Often workers come in contact with potential problems first, and early detection can save time and expense. Meetings, then, are held to inform people about policies or operations, gather information, conduct training, resolve problems, or make decisions.

m o .c

t o p

What makes for an effective meeting? Having a purpose, preparing ahead of time, setting goals during the meeting, and making provisions for follow-through and assessment afterwards are critical. A successful meeting is like a team who carefully cuts, trims and prepares a portion of meat to be hung by a hook. A hook is added, the meat is lifted and placed on a rail, and sent on its way. Oftentimes much work takes place in meetings. The participants may have cut, cleaned and even lifted the heavy carcass, but they have failed to put it on the rail. Next time, they will have to clean and lift it again.

A.7.(c) Barriers to communication

b . te

i s u

o n ig

s g lo

Communication is a process involving transmitting and receiving information. If the message sent by the sender is received in the same way as it was intended, the process of communication is called successful. But sometimes this does not happen due to some barriers in the process of communication. Barriers affect adversely the effectiveness of communication. In this chapter we will discuss some such barriers, for the awareness of the problems in itself is half the solution.

. w w

w

1. Wrong Choice of Medium -: There are various mediaof communication available- oral, written, visual,audio-visual etc. The medium of communicationshould be selected according to the kind of situation.A wrong choice may leads to many disturbances. For examples, if an employee wants to discuss somethingimportant with his superiors, a telephonicconversation or written letter may not of as much helpas the face-to-face dialogue. 2.Physical Barriersa)Noise-- Noise is a big barrier in communication. Infactories oral communication is difficult due toexcessive noise of the machines. There should besound proof and separate places in factories or mills for discussing important affairs.

b)Defects in the medium- A defective telephoneconnection or a poor mobile network, a slow
