School of Public Health Division of Epidemiology & Community Health

MPH “I am passionate about ensuring that families from vulnerable backgrounds have the support they need to build and maintain healthy and self-sufficient lives. I chose the U of MN School of Public Health because it's one of the best in the US. The knowledge and skills I've acquired from my program so far, as well as the people I've connected with, have been invaluable.” - Shoua Vang, current student

The Maternal and Child Health (MCH) program at the University of Minnesota’s School of Public Health trains students to promote and preserve the health of women, children, youth, and families. It does so with a nationally respected multidisciplinary faculty, a state-of-the art training program, and strong community ties. The intent of the program is to develop MCH leaders who will work in public health, health care, non-profit agencies and research facilities in the US and abroad. The curriculum emphasizes critical thinking about current research findings; skill development in research and evaluation methods, health management, communications, and policy; and field experience. There is a special emphasis on programs, policies, and research about socially vulnerable populations.

Program Curriculum There are three MPH emphasis areas in the Maternal and Child Health major. All provide a strong training in MCH populations and in public health practice: ○

The Standard program is for students without advanced degrees or who have limited professional experience.

The MCH Epidemiology program has a strong emphasis on epidemiologic methods. It was created for students who want to become epidemiologists with expertise in data collection, data analysis, and data interpretation specific to MCH populations.

The Advanced-Standing program is designed for students with an advanced degree (e.g., MD, MS, MSW, MEd) or students without an advanced degree who have at least three years of relevant (MCH, public health) experience.

The standard and advanced-standing programs may be completed online, inperson, or with a combination of online and in-person courses.

What do MCH Professionals do? Our name doesn’t tell the whole story. MCH professionals are definitely interested in mothers and children, but our interests extend to women, families and fathers. Our expertise includes reproductive health, infant and child health, adolescent health, social disparities, family systems, and women's health. We work around the globe in local, state, and federal government; academic institutions; research organizations; nonprofits; and health care agencies, clinics, and hospitals.

MCH Graduates MCH leaders identify and promote social and environmental conditions that contribute to the health of women, children, youth and families. Much of their work is focused on socially and economically vulnerable populations. MCH leaders develop public health programs and policies that focus on health promotion, health care equity, disease prevention, and primary care services. Graduates who are skilled in both epidemiology and MCH populations are increasingly required in city, county, and state health departments. Sample employers of our graduates:  U.S. National Center for Health Statistics  Children's Defense Fund  Global Health Fellows  MN Department of Health  University of Minnesota  Concern Worldwide  National Association of County and City Health Officials  World Health Organization  International Planned Parenthood

Interdisciplinary Concentrations and Minors Interdisciplinary concentrations are optional secondary areas of study to further enrich the MPH degree. Students have the option of concentrating their studies in these areas:  Health Disparities  Public Health Policy  Over 30 graduate level minors are available for MPH students.

Dual/Joint Degrees The School of Public Health offers numerous joint and dual degree options in collaboration with schools and colleges across the University.  MPH /MD in Medicine  MPH /JD in Law
