COMMUNITY NEWS May 6 ~ Sixth Sunday of Easter

Reading Food Pantry Mail Carriers Collection Saturday, May 12, 2018

Today’s Scriptures give us a message that is loud and clear: “Let us love one another. . .” and “This is my commandment, love one another.” The love that we share is not our own, but rather it is the love God has for us. Love is a powerful means of evangelization. The love of a faithful disciple draws people to Jesus Christ. So, let’s take the scripture to heart this week and extend the love of God to others.

We need your help for the annual collection of groceries by the Reading Mail Carriers. Volunteers are needed to sort and store the thousands of items that are received. The majority of volunteers will be needed in the afternoon and early evening. Please arriving between 2 and 6 PM and if you can stay at least to 8 PM. Whether you can give a couple of hours or several hours we will gladly welcome you ! Thank you, Charlotte Harlan - Phyllis and Bruce Maxwell Food Pantry phone: 781 944 8486

Honoring Our Patron Saint Athanasius, whose feast day was May 2nd. St. Athanasius led a tumultuous but dedicated life of service to the Church. He was the great champion of the faith against the widespread heresy of Arianism, the teaching by Arius that Jesus was not truly divine. The vigor of his writings earned him the title of Doctor of the Church. Born of a Christian family in Alexandria, Egypt, and given a classical education, Athanasius became secretary to Alexander, the bishop of Alexandria, entered the priesthood and was eventually named bishop himself. His predecessor, Alexander, had been an outspoken critic of a new movement growing in the East— Arianism. When Athanasius assumed his role as bishop of Alexandria, he continued the fight against Arianism. At first, it seemed that the battle would be easily won. However, this did not prove to be the case because five times Athanasius was exiled for his defense of the doctrine, of Christ’s divinity. It was only during one period of his life, he enjoyed 10 years of relative peace—reading, writing, and promoting the Christian life . St. Athanasius suffered many trials but was given the grace to remain strong against what probably seemed at times to be insurmountable opposition. He defended the true faith regardless of the cost to himself. In today’s world we may experience this same call to remain true to our faith, no matter what.

6th Sunday of Easter Overused and misunderstood, love has become a synonym for like, enjoy, desire, and want. We love everything from a new restaurant, to a pair of shoes, to people we admire. But to really love means more than just liking someone, or enjoying his or her company. Love means sacrifice and commitment and change. It means we give of ourselves so that someone else will benefit. Love means we act like God acts. How can you tell when two people are in love? A wise woman used to say that you just have to look in their eyes. Since the eyes were the windows to the soul, you could see the soul glowing in joy and happiness. It is more than a passing interest, physical attraction or a social friendship. Love changes people, making them happier, more content and full of hope. How can you tell when someone loves God? A wise man named Jesus used to say that you just have to see what they do. When people love God, they also love others. They show respect, kindness, generosity and compassion. It is a love that seeks the good of all, friend and foe alike. We think and act as God does, giving of ourselves for the sake of others. You will know if that love is genuine because it will change hearts, making others happier, more content and full of faith, hope and love.
