JUNE 27-30, 2014

Time is running short for you to make your reservations for the National Meeting June 27-30, in Williamsburg, VA.. May 27th is the deadline. We have only a few rooms left in our group block, and that will go away after the 27th. So please call today and make your room reservation 800-261-9530. Upon arrival, you will turn back several hundred years to the restored 18th century capital of Virginia. If you have never

been to Williamsburg you will be amazed. An excellent website for answering any questions you may have about Williamsburg is www.williamsburghistoictaverndining.com. This site also offers information on tours of Historic Williamsburg that you can take advantage of during your visit. We have a packed weekend planned for you. For the ladies on Saturday we will be holding our annual ladies luncheon at the Williamsburg Inn, in the lovely Roosevelt Room with “Martha Washington” as our guest speaker. The ladies can meet in the lobby of the Lodge at 11:30am and walk over together. Ladies, most sidewalks in Williamsburg are cobblestone, just a note, when you are packing your shoes.

PR E SI D E N T’ S L E TTE R Sunday evening I was upstairs at home watching TV when the neighborhood emergency sirens sounded. I immediately switched to one of our local stations which was showing the weather radar. It showed a possible tornado about 3 miles west of my house tracking northeast. I told Cheryl to get her shoes on and I ran outside to see if it was coming toward us. Thankfully it stayed on a northeast course and did not get any closer. The national weather service later rated it a high EF4 with winds of 180-190 mph (an EF5 is the highest with winds over 200 mph). The local communities of Paron, Mayflower, and Vilonia were hit very hard. Some of the fatalities were our patients.

Remember tomorrow is promised to no one! Do not pass up the chance to tell your close friends and loved ones how special they are to you and how much you love them. I want all our FDA family to know how special you are to me and what a big part of my life you have become. Now on a lighter note! Only four more weeks and we get to go to Abilene, KS. Bart has got a great meeting planned for us. Then we have our annual meeting in June at Williamsburg. There is so much history and things to do, plus great continuing education lined up for us. Thanks John. Hope to see you soon! Give me a hug, handshakes are for sissies! Andy

FLYING OshKosh B’Gosh July 26, 2014

80 Day s a Cou nd nti ng

80 days and counting till we get to airplane nirvana. You all have seen the prior articles for Oshkosh. Pretty much a can’t miss deal if you like airplanes at all…..last I checked we all have “the bug”. Check out the last 6 months of Newsletters to see all about Oshkosh itself. Here are things that you and I need to know at this point in time: #1) If you want to go and have not emailed me that you are coming, please do it now. I know about the pilots and their planes that have emailed me, but I need to know bodies (read that passengers), people driving, taking trains etc, that are coming. Email me: [email protected]

#2) Our Wausau pre-party party. If you are coming here Saturday to start the festivities and the pre-flight planning etc, listen up. We will be staying at “The Resort”. Yep, for those of you that don’t know it, when Ned Markey is not flying his gorgeous 210 and terrorizing children at the office, he is playing house. Yes sir, he went and bought himself Ned’s Pretty Good Ski Resort, affectionately known as The Rib Mountain Inn. We basically have the whole shebang to ourselves for the mere pittance of $59/night. Call 715-848-2802 and tell ‘em Ned sent ya. We will supply shuttles and the like for transportation. At this point it looks like a BBQ at the airport is on tap for Sat supper. Again, we need to know #s. If you want a car to explore the Land of the Packer Backers, cars can be booked from Enterprise. 715-848-8799.

#3) If you want to stay in a real bed at OSH, call Stacy. There MAY be a spot or two left, I just don’t know. 727-391-1750 OK, that’s all for now. Please, Please, Please email me that you are coming. Steve

All ages are welcome to join in Speaking of Competition, Steve Sudderth will be heading up the FDA pro-am golf tournament this year. Golfers will gather for a 9-hole Captain’s choice play on the “Spotswood” course. If you can stand and hold a club, you are eligible to play.

A Special Message From the National Meeting Golf Committee What better way to spend a Sunday morning than strolling the hillside of Virginia with friends and a golf club in hand. This year the golf tournament will be held on Sunday morning around 9:00am. The format will be a nine hole Captain’s Choice which allows everyone to play from the team’s best shot. NO PRESSURE! We did this at Madden Lake a few years ago and almost everyone participated and

had a great time. There is a nine hole executive course(fancy term for a par 3 course) just across the street from the Lodge and the golf professional says he will reserve the entire course for us that morning if we have enough participants. So sign up, bring your clubs or rent from the pro shop and we’ll have a great time. Who knows, you might get paired with last year’s tournament champion, Dr. Alex Willis, and you are sure to win! There is also an 18 hole championship course for those golf enthusiast who what to play more golf during the week.

FLYING

er

Here are the facts: First of all, an engine monitor is needed to accomplish this task. Without one,

n or

We need to step back from all the hangar talk and consider some reproducible data from one of the premier engine people in the business. I have long known of the outfit in Ada, OK known as GAMI or Tornado Alley Turbo. They have been analyzing engines for the last decade with the most sophisticated engine test cell in the country. They have a course called Advanced Pilot Seminars that I had the pleasure to take which is beyond a doubt the best $400 I have ever spent in aviation.

Historically, I have always twisted out my mixture control a ¼ of a turn every 1000 feet or so after reaching 2-3K AGL. Why you may ask….because somebody I respected told me to do it this way. Worse than this, with my big bore 550 NA Continental, was my procedure to lean for a high density altitude takeoff. I leaned back about “that” much because with a constant speed propeller you don’t really have the ability to do “that other procedure” as with a fixed pitch prop. You know what this is: you lean back until the RPMs drop and then push the mixture in about “that” much……….WHO KNOWS WHERE EITHER PROCEDURE LEAVES YOU!!!!!

C

As summer approaches and hotter temps lurk around the corner, it is time to revisit a subject that has as many procedures as there are pilots. How much do we lean our engine on takeoff and during climb to maximize performance and keep our engine healthy all at the same time?

With normally aspirated engine and correctly set fuel flow the procedure is to lean your NA engine on the ground at takeoff power to approximately 1300 dF (but no more than 1350 dF EGT) on the cylinder that has the hottest CHT. This EGT temp absolute number is the same regardless of size of engine or Lycoming or Continental. This gives you the most Horsepower and keeps the Intra Cylinder Pressures (thus Temps) in the safe range. Continue leaning every 1000 feet to keep the EGT approximately 1300 dF and carefully watch CHT not to exceed 380 dF. If you see CHT trend climbing rather than enriching mixture, decrease the rate of climb, thus allowing more cooling air, all the way up to cruise altitude. This trick helps you with maximum performance take off even from KDEN on 100 dF day. You will keep max HP and a cool happy engine. What simplicity!

ty

it is impossible to know what your EGTs/CHTs are doing on each cylinder.

fe Sa

Density Altitude and the Normally Aspirated Engine

The 1300 EGT procedure has worked on thousands of tests in the test cell with all types engines and temperatures etc. I wish I would have known about this 25 years ago. Be safe up there! FDA Safety Team

Being a member of the Flying Dentists has been only one of the amazing things Dr. Paul Spenadel has done throughout his life time. Dr. Paul, as I call him, has been a member of the Flying Dentists since 1980 and in all those 34 years, he has attended every National Meeting with the exception of two. He began his piloting career as a volunteer in 1942. He was a WWII Night Flyer with anti air craft pilot training under his belt. In 1954 with his GI bill he started Dental school and is still working today at age 90. You can still find him working at Jamaica hospital running the nursing

When I asked Dr. Paul, what was his most memorial moment that he has had with the Flying Dentists, he smiled and said, “ Making so many great friends and able to see this beautiful country of ours”.
