Mr. Friden’s Classroom News Room 107 Concord Elementary-May 1, 2017 Sabaah el kheer parents and happy May Day. Last week was a busy week with lots of learning, fun projects and high spirits for the Carnival. Here is a look back to the weeks learning we did in room 107. This Week in Room 107 Math-The students have been learning about capacity, geometric shapes and a review of positive and negative numbers. It’s hard to believe but the students will be assessed on unit 11 on Friday. Our last timed test will be tomorrow so the students have one more day to practice their facts. As always, if your child needs or wants extra problems for support, I encourage them to do the IXL lessons on their computers. Language Arts-This week we focused on Determining Important Ideas and Summarizing. We read a book together about Charles Lindberg’s life and used our summarizing skills for deeper discussions. Our read aloud is Bud, Not Buddy by Christopher Paul Curtis which is a Newberry Award winner. Science-We started a new unit which covers Water. Our field trip last week to the Eden Prairie Water Facility was a great kickoff to this fun unit. The first lessons covered properties of water as well as surface tension. News and Notes! Book Club Our April Book Club selection is Shiloh by Phyllis Reynolds Naylor. It is a winner of the 1992 Newberry Medal and a classic. Our Book Club meeting will be this Thursday during lunch/recess. I will announce our May Book Club selection by the end of the week. Save the Date The date has been chosen for parents to visit our classroom and view the student’s country websites. They are really excited to share these with you. The date is Thursday May 25th at 9:00am. I will provide more details by the end of the week. Hope to see all of you soon.
