Lent challenge: Get Rid of 40 Things in 40 days During Lent we want to de-emphasize ourselves and emphasize our dependence on God. Here’s the challenge: During the 40 days of Lent, find one thing each day you no longer need. For most of us, this should be really easy. It could be a kitchen item, a jacket, a bike, an unopened gift hanging around. Go through your closets, drawers, basement, even the garage. Find someone or somewhere to which to donate. Keep a bag by the door into which you’ll put your donations, except for bigger things. As a reminder for your older kids, you could label it “40 Items in 40 Days.”

March 5, 2017 Do you feel alone? Are you frustrated or angry with each other? Do you argue … or have you just stopped talking to each other? Does talking about it only make it worse? This program has helped 10’s of 1000’s of couples experiencing marital difficulty at all levels including disillusionment and deep misery. For confidential information or to register for the program beginning with a weekend on March 24, call 905-664-5212, email: [email protected] or visit the website at www.retrouvaille.org.

Conscience Rights for Doctors

The College of Physicians and Surgeons of ON requires physicians to make an “effective referral” for assisted suicide and euthanasia. Many Catholic physicians and other caregivers are unable to do this in good conscience and are being forced to choose between their conscience and their careers. Given the introduction of Bill 84 on medical aid in dying at Queen’s Park in December we have the opportunity to push for amendments to the Bill to include conscience protection for all health care workers. We are asking parishioners to contact their MPPs about this important issue. It is important for the Catholic voice in Ontario to be heard. There is a suite of materials with step by step instructions that can be used to help you speak to your MPP about this topic. Here are the links to the materials and to a video which explains the situation, Resources: bit.ly/callforconscience Video http://bit.ly/consciencevideo or you can visit the website at: http://www.canadiansforconscience.ca/ No other country in the world requires this kind of violation of conscience. Let’s help make sure Ontario protects the conscience rights of all.

Healing after an Abortion: It Is Possible

Caring hearts are available to help you deal with the difficult feelings that often come after an abortion. At Project Rachel we offer a confidential service allowing people to work through their feelings and find hope and healing. Please contact us at 905-5261999 or toll free at 1-888-385-3850. Think of places that take donations of things in good condition. St. Vincent de Paul Thrift Store (74 Elizabeth St., Guelph; Bibles for Missions Thrift Store, (525 Maple St., Fergus) take pretty much anything including clothing, furniture, dishes, sheets and towels in good condition, clothes, toys, sports items. As we clear our closets, we can clear our minds. As we declutter we can think of those less fortunate. And be grateful for our blessings. From the Catechism of the Catholic Church, no. 2462: Almsgiving is “a witness to fraternal charity” and “a work of justice pleasing to God.” — Declutter and help the less fortunate!

St. John’s Parish Mission Statement We believe deeply that Jesus Christ is in our midst, in ourselves and in each other. In our faith journey we will be the heart, hands, feet and voice of Jesus Christ, reaching out to all.

SACRAMENTS Confirmation We congratulate the 87 young people who were confirmed by Bishop Douglas Crosby on Friday, February 17 and Saturday, February 18. May they remain strong in their faith, and always call upon the Holy Spirit in their need.

I

Awaiting the Bridegroom

have a close, non-Catholic friend who lives to taunt me a bit when Lent comes around. On Ash Wednesday and Good Friday he invariably finds an opportunity to moan his way through something rich and chocolatey right in front of me. And on Fridays of the season he not-so-helpfully suggests, “Hey who’s up for steak fajitas tonight?” Although he doesn’t quite understand the need for fasting, or why the Church would propose it (or for that matter, why the Church assumes she has the authority to do so), he is nevertheless impressed by the radicalness of it, and by the seriousness with which faithful Catholics approach this sacrifice and offer their various intentions through it. We fast, not because food is bad, but precisely because food is good; not to weaken our bodies, but to strengthen our spirits. And the Church proposes this to us for the same reason our mothers asked us when we were children to discipline ourselves against the urge for sweets: unchecked appetites can wreak havoc and cause us to lose ourselves. Therefore, Lent is a privileged season in which the Church, good mother that she is, reminds us that indeed everything is a gift, everything is grace. Especially steak fajitas and carb-heavy chocolate desserts. Joshua Stancil, writer & editor, North Carolina
