Student Voices: Facing History’s 2018 Student Essay Contest Facing History and Ourselves teaches us to think about the world in new ways, igniting conversations about how we can build societies free from racism, antisemitism, bullying, and hatred of all kinds. This contest will invite students to reflect on the stories and ideals that have helped shape the ways they think about their roles and responsibilities as engaged members of their communities. Tell a story that you believe shows the power of uniting people, building bridges, or orienting us to what we share and the common good. * Don’t miss your chance to register for the Spring 2018 YES!

Student Writing Competition: Letters of Hope. The deadline for registration is this Friday, March 9. Register your class today! Click here for contest details. These can be chaotic, uncertain times. For young people, it can feel overwhelming as they look to the future—their future. It can also be an opportunity to reflect on what is most important to them and how to take charge of the change they want to see. Just like the students in Parkland, Florida. Just like students standing up for DREAMers. Just like students who started a prayer camp at Standing Rock. For the spring contest, students will read the YES! article, ”Love Letters to the Resistance,” by Auro Bagado. The article reviews the book, Radical Hope: Letters of Love and Dissent in Dangerous Times, that spotlights letters penned by 30 writers and sent to people—past, present, and future—who hold importance in their lives. In these letters, the writers seek hope from elders, grandparents, activists, children, even strangers who mirror the despair—and hope—that people are feeling at this moment in time. Your students will have plenty to write about as they ponder this question: Think about what matters most to you about our country’s future. Write a letter to someone important to you, describing that future you imagine and hope for. The contest is under way, but it’s not too late to sign up. Just do it by this Friday! Essays are due April 20, 2018.

* Lead2Feed Challenge Teachers and youth club advisers can register their classrooms by filling out the Lead2Feed Registration form. If you are a student, you can register too! You will still need to have a teacher or adviser submit your entry to the Lead2Feed Challenge. Why should I participate? The Lead2Feed Challenge gives students a jump start into the real world of leadership by offering comprehensive lessons aligned to standards and 21st-century skills. But what excites students and teachers alike are the opportunities to put leadership skills into action in their communities. What is the reward? Log in to your dashboard to complete your Challenge Entry Form. Students select their project, partner with a registered 501c3 and compete for a chance to win grants and tech products for schools and youth clubs. We accept Challenge entries at any time. You will be entered in the Challenge for 2017-18, which will close April 6, 2018. To see examples of Winning Submissions click here!
