MONTHLY NEWSLETTER | MARCH 2017 From the Pastor: I stayed home Monday. It was my turn to experience the “crud” that is going around. I felt it coming last Friday. I was out back mowing the grass in the wind and cold. That will usually do it. So I stayed home. Even with a million channels on Dish TV there was nothing good on TV to watch. After lunch I went upstairs to my “workroom” and sat down at my desk. The scripture I was reading was Mark 12:41-44, the story of “The Widow’s Offering,” our lesson for this coming Sunday. The passage that kept drawing my attention was,”... but she out of her poverty has put in everything she had, all she had to live on.” What a contrast Jesus makes between the rich, who out of their abundance put in large sums (knowing that there was always plenty leftover) and the widow who gave all she had to live on, “two small copper coins, which are worth a penny.” We are left pondering the question, of the two which is walking “just a closer walk” with Jesus. The Rev. N.T. Wright in his Commentary on the Gospel according to Mark points out that the Story of the Widow’s Offering is not just a commentary on the of the lives of the rich compared to the faith of the widow, but that it is also a commentary on our God. Our God is a God of abundance, but rather than holding something back like the rich, our God is “all in” like the Widow - our God has put in everything he has - Jesus. Here is Jesus sitting down opposite the Treasury of the Temple knowing that his Good News is falling on both deaf ears, the rich, and on the glad ears of the poor, the widow. The Pharisees are plotting to capture and kill Jesus, while the widow has taken Jesus’ message to heart and gives all she has to live on. Trusting, as always, that God will provide. God has provided for all God’s children, poor and rich, in the person of the one who is sitting in the Temple shade in the heat of the day asking of his Father, “Not my will, but Thy will be done.” When it comes to God’s children and God’s creation, our God is “all in.” We see this in the life of God’s

son, Jesus, and the lengths that God is willing to go to be reunited with God’s people. God is putting in everything, so that we might all have abundant lives. As our Lenten journey of faith brings us all closer to Jerusalem, we too need to ask ourselves, “Am I in?” If so, how far are we willing to go in faith? See you in church.
Faithfully, Mark

Mt. Zion Book Club The Mt. Zion Book Club will meet April 10, 2017 at 3:00PM. We will be discussing the book, “A Man Called Ove” by Fredrick Backman. In this “charming debut” (People) from one of Sweden’s most successful authors, a grumpy yet loveable man finds his solitary world turned on its head when a boisterous young family moves in next door. Meet Ove. He’s a curmudgeon—the kind of man who points at people he dislikes as if they were burglars caught outside his bedroom window. He has staunch principles, strict routines, and a short fuse. People call him “the bitter neighbor from hell.” But must Ove be bitter just because he doesn’t walk around with a smile plastered to his face all the time? Behind the cranky exterior there is a story and a sadness. So when one November morning a chatty young couple with two chatty young daughters move in next door and accidentally flatten Ove’s mailbox, it is the lead-in to a comical and heartwarming tale of unkempt cats, unexpected friendship, and the ancient art of backing up a U-Haul. All of which will change one cranky old man and a local residents’ association to their very foundations. A feel-good story in the spirit of The Unlikely Pilgrimage of Harold Fry and Major Pettigrew’s Last Stand, Fredrik Backman’s novel about the angry old man next door is a thoughtful exploration of the profound impact one life has on countless others. “If there was an award for ‘Most Charming Book of the Year,’ this first novel by a Swedish blogger-turned-overnight-sensation would win hands down” (Booklist, starred review). Main Street Mission Hours of Operation: Monday’s and Friday’s ======= 1:30-4:00 PM. Tuesday’s and Thursdays ===== 8:30-11:00 AM. If you are interested in volunteering, please contact Hope Oliphant at 704-798-5929 or e-mail at
[email protected]. Thank you! For more information or any questions about any of their needs or projects, you may also call Anne Corriher at 704-798-5177. A Hope Team At Main Street Mission, we use the term “Hope Team” in regard to our Getting Ahead graduates and those who have participated in our Bridges Training. A community team is formed and relationships are built. A group of wonderful volunteers came together 3 years ago to plan and organize this new initiative. The term Hope Team was a unanimous choice to name the ones who would willing to circle around and encourage our future Getting Ahead Graduates. From a Christian perspective, the word “Hope” is “the assurance of things hoped for the conviction of things not seen” (Hebrews 11:1). It is the faith that cannot be moved by circumstances or what the eyes cannot see. One definition of hope in the dictionary is “the feeling that what is wanted can be had or that events will turn out for the best”. The word “Team” means a coming together to achieve a common goal. Therefore, our neighbors who are graduates and our neighbors who are certified in bridges training, come together to make a Team; a Team that has the Hope and the feeling that what is wanted can happen and will turn out for the best! Have you ever had a “cheerleader” in your corner? Have you ever had someone to encourage you in good times or bad? You probably have had at some point in your life someone who cheered you on. Someone who stood by you in thick or thin, who helped carry your burdens. God does not intend for us to walk alone, and when people journey together and lives are shared, true community happens! The community that God has designed for us from the very beginning! Thank you God for the cheerleaders and encouragers in our lives! In community love, Anne
Shout out
Thanks to the following groups that came and worked on a special project for Main Street Mission. Mt Zion UCC Youth Group | Rock Grove UMC Youth Group | Northwest Cabarrus FFA PET PALS Main Street Mission is about to unleash a new program for our neighbors that we think will be the cat’s meow! It’s called “Pet Pals”. The program will bear no cost to MSM, nor deflect from the primary mission goal. Pet Pals will be available only in relation to support and participation within the community. Many of our neighbors that come in for services are pet owners, and for many of them, their pet is a trusted and loyal companion, and Pet Pals will give support to that special bond between person and pet. Our program will be quite simple; neighbors enrolled in our network can register their pet into the Pet Pals program and will receive a “Pet Pass” and “Pet Owner’s Manual”. Then, each time they come in for family food, they present their Pet Pass and receive whatever is available at the time. One may receive pet food, snacks, treats, or maybe a toy or even a new leash. Wouldn’t that be special? We are recruiting supporters and donors for this simple, yet kind hearted program and look forward to your involvement! More news to come! For information or support, please contact Main Street Mission. COME…SIT…SHAKE…WOOF…PURRR…THANKS!!!
Sincerely, Ron Brown
