ive students of the Department of Actuarial Science and Insurance were on Tuesday, March 8, 2017 presented with scholarship from the Funmi Babington-Ashaye Foundation. The Funmi Babington-Ashaye Foundation which was incorporated on October 22, 2015, was borne out of the founder- Mrs Funmi Babington-Ashaye's empathy for the challenges faced by students from humble background with the payment of their school fees. The award is therefore aimed at providing support to 400 level students with excellent academic performance with a partial scholarship of fifty thousand naira per awardee.

In his welcome address, the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Rahamon A Bello FAEng who was represented by the Deputy Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Oluwatoyin Ogundipe, expressed sincere appreciation to the founder, Mrs. Funmi Babington-Ashaye and the Foundation for supporting the advancement efforts of our noble institution through the provision of scholarship awards to promote academic excellence among indigent students. He also congratulated the awardees and enjoined them to always aim for excellence in all their endeavours. Mrs. Teniola Stuffman, a member of the Foundation’s Board of Trustees, was on hand to present the cheques to the awardees. She informed that the award is presently open to only students of the Actuarial Science and Insurance programmes, but, plans are in the pipeline to extend the award to other programmes in the nation's Universities.

he Vice-Chancellor on Tuesday, 7th March received Professor Harley Dickinson, of the Department of Sociology, University of Saskachewan, Canada in the Vice-Chancellor's Conference Room.

Professor Harley Dickinson in his response thanked the ViceChancellor and all those who had made his first visit and stay very eventful. He said that his visit is an eye opener and that he is optimistic that the relationship will have a strong foundation that will certainly enrich the educational pursuits of the three Institutions reciprocally.

The Professor paid a courtesy call on the Vice-Chancellor after his Academic working visit to University of Lagos. The visiting Professor informed the VC that the partnership between the Institutions, University of Saskaschewan (USASK), University of Lagos (UNILAG) and the Beijing Institute of Technology (BIT) will include: Ø Drafting a research proposal, itemizing project objectives, activities and deliverables for a possible collaboration involving UNILAG, USASK and BIT. Ø Planning for initial rotational three-year collaboration symposia; USASK will host the first symposium in August of 2017, UNILAG in 2018 and BIT in 2019. Ø The possibility of expansion of the collaboration to include government, especially the National Assembly, Ministries of Foreign Affairs, Trade and Commerce.

Also present at the occasion were: Deputy Vice-Chancellor, (Academic and Research), Prof. Oluwatoyin Ogundipe; immediate past Deputy Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Duro Oni; Dean, Faculty of Arts, Prof. O.A Falaiye; Dean, Faculty of Social Sciences, Prof. Iyiola Oni; Director, Research and Innovation, Prof. Wellington Oyibo; Director, Confucius Institute, Prof. Olusegun Awonusi; Acting Head, Department of Sociology, Dr. Olufunlayo Bammeke.

The Vice-Chancellor in his remarks spoke briefly on the history of the University of Lagos and its quest for more mutual collaborations that will be beneficial to both staff and students. He informed further that the University has put in place a Research and Innovation Office to strengthen its research drive. He stated further that arrangement has been concluded to re-brand the office of International Relations and Partnership and Prospects to interface with fellow researchers across the world. He added that the University has been implementing the agreement on the Student Mentorship Programme by sending staff of the University Library

PRESENTATION OF PLAQUES TO RECIPIENTS OF THE DR. ARINOLA AGUDA OLUWO ACADEMIC PRIZES

rs. Ronke Salaam, Director of the Office of Advancement introduced Dr. Arinola Aguda Oluwo, donor of the Dr. Arinola Aguda Oluwo Academic Prizes, describing her as a distinguished alumna of the University, who earned her undergraduate and postgraduate degrees from the Institution. She referred to her as a gender activist with a passion for women empowerment. Dr. Arinola Aguda Oluwo, in her remarks, expressed much gratitude to the University for the support she received during her studentship, all through her sojourn on campus, identifying it as part of what motivated her to give back to the Institution. She reiterated her passion for the female gender, and seized the opportunity to advocate for the establishment of a Women Resource Centre in the University, in line with global trends. In his response, Acting Vice-Chancellor, Prof. O. T Ogundipe, praised the donor for her remarkable endowment to female graduates who have done exceptionally well in their academic pursuit. He advised her to write to the ViceChancellor as regards the Women Resource Center, and promised it will be given due attention. He thanked her for adding to the endowment portfolio of the University, noting that endowments are part of the factors considered in the global ranking of universities.

INAUGURATION OF FACULTY OF ENGINEERING ALUMNI ASSOCIATION

T

he Faculty of Engineering, University of Lagos, held the 1st Edition of the Faculty's Alumni Lecture Series and the inauguration of the Faculty of Engineering Alumni Association on Thursday, March 16, 2017 at the Julius Berger Hall, University of Lagos. In his welcome speech, the Vice-Chancellor, University of Lagos, Professor Rahamon A. Bello, FAEng, congratulated the Faculty for taking the lead in inaugurating a faculty-based Alumni Association. He especially appreciated the class of 69/72 who masterminded the creation of the Faculty of Engineering Alumni Association. The Dean, Faculty of Engineering, Professor Funso Falade FAEng, informed that the Association had already taken some necessary and vital steps to ensure that it succeeds. These steps include: ? Registration with the Corporate Affairs Commission (CAC), ? Opening a bank account with UBA Plc in the name of the Association and also, ? Creating a website, www.unilagfeaa.com

? Promoting the University's name and

reputation etc. The National President, UNILAG Alumni Association, Chief Dr. Olorogun Sunny Kuku administered oaths on members of the faculty-based Alumni Association. Thereafter, he stated that State Chapters of the UNILAG Alumni Association already existed, but Faculty Chapters are close knit and will therefore be key in reaching more alumni members. PROFESSOR OLAYIWOLA OLURODE DELIVERED THE 4TH INAUGURAL LECTURE IN THE 2016/2017 ACADEMIC SESSION

conferred by Sociology upon our existence, critiqued the taken-forgranted nature of dominant social relationships and developmental problems.

rofessor Olayiwola Olurode presented a comprehensive and elucidating inaugural lecture entitled “The Slaughter's Slab as a Metaphor…” on Wednesday, March 22, 2017. Professor Olurode indicated that his research works revolved around three interrelated but not mutually exclusive areas of Sociology – Political Sociology, Gender Studies and Social Inequality.

He afforded timely caveat in the interest of our socio-political integrity as a country and suggested remedial measures by way of policy prescriptions consistent with the tenets of Sociology and the indisputable role of human agency.

He situated Sociology, using the metaphor of The Slaughter's Slab, within pre-modern, modern and post-modern milieus, their behavioural and developmental challenges and thereby illuminated the centrality of the discipline and thus its relevance, especially of cultural survivals and social heritage, in the context of unfolding social change process. The students of the International School, University of Lagos were some of the students that benefitted from the practical class. The students, who were guests of the Faculty of Arts, were in the country to learn more about African History and Culture. he Vice-Chancellor, Professor Rahaman A. Bello FAEng on th Wednesday, March 29 , 2017 received an alumnus and a popular musician, Dr. Adewale Ayuba in the Vice-Chancellor's Conference Room.

Dr. Adewale Ayuba in his response said that his achievements so far will not be complete without a reference to Unilag. He pledged his unflinching support for the aspiration of the University in its quest to be a world-class Institution. He expressed his gratitude to the Management for the reception.

The visitor and his team were led by the Chairman of University of Lagos Alumni Association, Lagos State Branch, Dr. Lukumon Adeoti, who had been liasing with Dr. Ayuba.

Also present were the Deputy Vice-Chancellor, (Development Services), Prof. Folasade Ogunshola; University Bursar, Dr. Lateef Odekunle; Dean, Faculty of Arts, Prof. Muyiwa Falaiye and Executive members of the University of Lagos Alumni Association, Lagos State Branch.

In his opening remarks, Dr. Adeoti praised the Vice-Chancellor for his visionary achievements. He introduced Dr. Ayuba as an alumnus and an Architect who had wanted to donate a legacy project to the University of Lagos, which informed his intension to bestow a Music Museum to the Music programme of the University of Lagos. The Vice-Chancellor thanked Dr. Ayuba for his kind and laudable gesture. He posited that any University all over the world that is interested in progress must work closely with the Alumni. University of Lagos, at 55years, encourages a s y m b i o t i c relationship with its Alumni with focus on the repositioning of UNILAG to meet world standards and

aster Lawal Giyath and Master Ifeanyi Anyagwa of the Staff School, University of Lagos emerged First and Seventh with scores of 99.13% and 97.60% at the recently concluded 13th Annual National Mathematics

competition by the Nigerian Turkish International Schools. The Competition which was organized in conjunction with the National Mathematics Centre also awarded a Certificate of Recognition to Mr. Odubiyi Solomon, a Mathematics teacher with the Staff School.

Transition

he Head, Staff and Students of the Department of Zoology announced the transition to glory of Professor Grace Olubukunmi Adeoye (nee Adesina) whose death happened on Tuesday, March 14, 2017 at the University Teaching Hospital, Idi-Araba after a brief illness. Late Professor Adeoye was born on the 23rd of April, 1956. Until her demise, she was a Professor in the Department of Zoology and a member of the University of Lagos Senate. On behalf of the Senate, Management, Staff and Students of the University of Lagos, the Vice-Chancellor has commiserated with the family. May God Almighty grant her eternal rest.
