PR E SI D E N T’ S L E TTE R The past two weekends I was able to attend two wonderful events. The FDA Snowmass ski trip was just awesome! As always Ray does a great job with this meeting. The speakers were great, the weather and snow conditions were perfect, and everyone loved the pot luck cook out. It gave our group more time to spend together. I did my best to keep up with Beau, John, Jason, and Brandon skiing down the slopes. Did I say skiing, it was more like rocketing down the mountain, they had this idea to put ski tracks apps on their phones and see how fast they could go. John claims he hit 70 but it did not stay on his phone. I said he must have hit a microburst. I was last at 64 mph. Everything still intact and nothing broken!! The second neat event happened today, Sunday. I flew in a 50 ship RV formation flight over the Phoenix NASCAR race as part of the opening ceremony. We were supposed to have two practice flights Saturday but it rained and both were cancelled. We were able to have a practice flight this morning then the main flight this evening. Bee Gee was our flight lead and time over target was 1:02,30. On our inbound leg he was told tot was now extended 15 seconds
and he still nailed it!!! This was their 50th anniversary and they requested a 50 ship fly over. For me this was a really special event and am proud to have been able to participate. Hope to see everyone in San Salvador in two weeks! Fly safely!!! GIVE ME A HUG, HANDSHAKES ARE FOR SISSIES! ANDY(DRILLER) I wanted each of you to see what Andy did today as he would never blow his own horn. It is an historic formation flight of 50 (yes fifty) RVs during the National Anthem at the Nascar race this afternoon at Phoenix. He is flying Delta 4 which is the #4 position (tail end of the diamond) of the second 4 ship diamond directly behind the lead 4 ship diamond. (4th plane directly behind the leader). He has smoke. By the way, they hit the speedway exactly on time during the National Anthem which is the most difficult thing to do on top of all the other logistical nightmares of pulling off something of this magnitude. What an accomplishment as it takes a great deal of effort to get your formation approval rating and then get asked to be in something monumental like this. Congratulations Andy. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ymkRl68fIB0

F LY I N G FDA SKI TEAM STRIKES AGAIN Snowmass Recap Last month saw 75 FDAers brave the clear skies of Snowmass, CO. for another 4 days of Great CE, good snow, and perfect weather, yes we had clear skies several times. We missed the Kingston and Schell group who were snowed in at Minneapolis and unable to leave home. Dr. Jan Bublik, Dr. Cal Calcote, and Mike Shell, CPA each presented excellent courses that received rave reviews. We had 14 skiers under the age of 10 and one who is 82. With ski-in skiout convenience everyone could ski. Consider joining us next year, February 20-24. The Crestwood Lodge gives us a considerable discount to all who reserve early for next year and 7 condos are already
reserved. Email me if you would like the Early Registration Form.
[email protected] Instead of a Saturday night restaurant outing, 64 of us “ate in” by “grilling out” at one of the resort’s party rooms with an outside terrace. This first try at a FDA SKI POT LUCK which was a great success and will be repeated. We may change some of the faces

Shaking off the dust, both pilot and plane, is a part of preparing for that Spring check ride I do each year. Soon ready to head to Club Med with the group…..and then Williamsburg. MARCH 2014
FLYING OSHKOSH B’Gosh It seems like an eternity and a whole other climate away with most of our Nation still in winter’s grip even in March, but Oshkosh in July is coming right up.
The biggest thing at this point in time is lodging! Many of us will want to camp under the wings of our steeds in true Oshkosh style but there are two options for those of us that want a bit softer bed. A Christian school turned dormitory is waiting for us. They can take 53 people and will house us complete with breakfast and a free shuttle that departs 2 times in the morning and leaves the airport to come back to the dorm 2 times in the late afternoon early evening. Supper is provided for a cost of $8 and the gymnasium is turned into a game room with ping pong, TV, card games etc. The whole place has good A/C just in case it gets good and hot in Wisconsin in July. Each classroom is turned into a bedroom that houses 10-12 people. They do have a women’s bathroom and can have a women’s only room depending on how many gals wish to partake. The cost for this is $59/nite. We need to tell Stacy pronto if you want to stay here, otherwise the deposit has a bit of a penalty. The other option is The University of Wisconsin at Oshkosh where we get a true dormitory. There is a max of 2/room and they have 10 rooms that have A/C and 30 rooms that do not have A/C at a cost of $120 and $70/ room (not per person) respectively. Breakfast and supper are provided and shuttle rides cost $1.50 per person one way so $3.00/day. We will have more people than each can hold thus the two different choices. Each of these options has merit and at least get you off the ground.
Again we must tell Stacy, like now, if you want to stay here. The whole week starts at beautiful Wausau, Wisconsin for a pre-party party on Saturday July 26th with our own Tom Turner, Jan Bublik, and Ned Markey at the controls. We will have a group BBQ complete with dancing girls (3 Markey’s, age 4 and under), rousing polka music and plenty of cheese curds for all. We then get a good nights sleep to get ready for our thorough pre-flight briefing and launch for step two of our journey. We fly to Fond Du Lac (KFLD) Sunday morning, park, and get lined up for a release by OSH tower early Sunday afternoon for us to make a 9 mile flight ending on 36L and 36R while the tower closes the airport for 10 minutes just for us…the crowd at Oshkosh waits with baited breath for the Flying Dentists to arrive. Our group is then ushered to the North 40 where we will park for the next few days to start our adventure. Tuesday evening we have a tent reserved just for us after the airshow and will have a catered supper from the best caterer in Oshkosh. Yep this one will be a hog roast done up right, compliments of the FDA. We will have plenty of beverages both soft drink and adult to rehydrate us after an indescribable day of aviation overload. After supper will be CE (TBD) before we get some shut-eye to do it all again tomorra. We will stay at least through Wednesday and for those wanting to partake of arguably the best event at Oshkosh, the Wednesday night aerial show, a Thursday departure home is on tap. If you want on board, let Stacy know and please let me know so that I can tell OSH ATC who is coming. Check out this link to wet your whistle: http://www.eaavideo.org/video.aspx? v=2680136529001 Sounds fun, No? Steve

MARCH 2014
FLYING Abilene Fly-In June 6-8, 2014 won’t go any further. I want you to be enlightened!
Final plans are beginning to come together for the Abilene, Kansas extravaganza! We will let the Holiday Inn Express Abilene (785) 263-4049 will be our home away from home. Please contact them for your rooms by May 1, 2014. Now if you can please be BIG spenders and get a King Room as they will be short on two queen bed rooms as is a large family Reunion on Friday night. The rate is $106.00 per night for the King suite room or $96.00 for the two queen bed standard room. I told the manager, Chad, old patient of mine, that you would be steered toward the King rooms. Friday night for those that make it in time we will be either driving or flying to the National Biplane Flyin in Junction City, KS for a light dinner and hangar talking with pilots that own planes of yesteryear! Sorry we cannot spend more time there guys and gals but some dentistry has to be discussed this weekend.
Ladies do not think you will be left out Saturday morning. No sleeping in for you as Kate will round you up to tour the Seelye Mansion in Abilene KS. Another patient of mine, Mr Terry Tietjens, will give you a personal guided tour of the mansion he owns. You will see a wonderful 1905 25room mansion that was build for Dr. A. B. Seelye of the A. B. Seelye Medical Company. Sorry dentists of the group you need your C.E. you will be missing this side trip. Saturday afternoon, following a lunch on our own, we will wonder through the Eisenhower Museum and Center with tours of the Family Home and the museum grounds. Once you get a look at the World War II Exhibits, that has been on display for a year and to continue until December 2016, you will have the opportunity to cross the street and check out the Greyhound Hall of Fame. This attraction is a free walk through devoted to the Greyhound breeding, racing and history of the sport in this the Greyhound capital of the United States. Donations are encouraged to continue supporting this wonderful dog breed.
Now, Saturday morning the dentists of the group will listen to two outstanding speakers! Yep my ol’buddy, FAA Master Pilot, Mr James Tullis will talk and stretch his flying career from soloing in a Piper Colt in Atchison, Kansas, to flying the Cessna Citation, and now back to a Piper Archer for fun. I have tried to brain wash the man into owning a Mooney but his loyalties are with Piper! Also, yours truly will be entertaining you on the ins and outs of a Malpractice Case. Yes, folks, “You do not throw stones in glass houses!” This is a 5 year……ok I
The evening dinner will be at the world renowned "Brookville Hotel”. No folks you do not have to travel to Brookville, Kansas as the restaurant has moved from it’s original 1894 Hotel to its relocated replicated restaurant in Abilene, Kansas. Your tour guide will make reservations and the dinner will be part of your registration fee. No, Ray Rhodes, you cannot order beef at the Brookville Hotel they only serve up family style chicken. Do not fill up on the cole slaw and relish as you have Ice cream after the chicken is served! I know you thought your evening was complete but NO we are not finished. There is a free Salina Symphony Concert at the Eisenhower Center grounds Saturday night. If you have room please put in some lawn chairs as the grass may be tough to set on. I will have as many chairs that I can come up with in my Avalanche but extras will probably help. Hate to have you folks get all those Kansas chigger bites!! Yep a trip with a little culture in the heartland to get you relaxed to prepare for the return trip home. So, safe travels and see you in Abilene, Kansas June 6-8th. P.S. You need to set your GPS’s to K78 to the Abilene, KS airport. North/South 4100 ft runway, please bring your tie downs with you. I do not want any calls from a stray pilot asking where I am, when he is sitting in Abilene, Texas as I will not come pick you up! You will get directions though, 002 degrees for 407 Nautical Miles!!! You might have a tail wind from there this time of year! Bart Bycroft

MARCH 2014
FLYING People to People Recap For those of you who did NOT sign up and go to Cuba for a “People to People” exchange with the FDA and Florida Tree Institute you missed a wonderful, bucket list check off, opportunity. You missed being able to interact with a Cuban trained dentist at her office and enjoy what Cuba had to offer.
This country is a European and Canadian destination. Foster and Nancy Hawkins along with Kate and I enjoyed the Cuban culture while discussing Dentistry throughout the trip. Four days in Trinidad, Cuba, Celebrating it’s 500 year celebration as a city. Yes, that is not a typo (1514-2014)! The streets are cobble stone with rocks that were taken out of spanish ships to make room for the new world bounty to return to Spain. This city was filled with old world charm and very friendly citizens.
Major mode of transportation in this area is horse and buggy, tractors pulling flatbed trailers, and Pre-1959 American made horseless carriages. A side trip to Cienfuegos, Cuba allowed us to have a special lunch on a boat in the Bay of Cienfuegos (Caribbean Sea) Yes, we did take it all in while visiting rural Cuba. It was then off on a 4 hour bus ride (airconditioned busses owned by the Cuban government) to Havana a city of two million people. A bustling city with what appears to be renovation happening every where but NO workers to be spotted anywhere. A walking tour of old Havana as well as a horse carriage taxi ride through New and Old Havana. Finally having our farewell dinner at a private home (Paladar) arriving in those Pre-1959 Classic “topless” American Car Taxis!!!! The one thing I missed while I was in Cuba was no sounds of a small horizontally opposed engine overhead. Yep, the absence of those wonderful flying machines. No sign of general aviation anywhere! Now take in account that there is a $200.00 dollar a person tax when arriving by air from the United States. (not counting a landing fee!) I do not see that changing anytime soon. They have airports scattered throughout the island but
NO AIRPLANES!!!! The last day of our trip in Havana I heard the roar of jet engines overhead bringing more tourist to the island. Hotel accommodations were very nice. The food was filling and no we did not drink the tap water but the Cervezas (Beer) and Cuba Libra (Rum and Coke) and Mojitos flowed freely. Both Foster and I said “I signed up right away thinking I would not get a spot” and never gave it a second thought. Then come to find out the four of us were the only ones from the FDA present. If there is another opportunity to see Cuba I would highly recommend a trip like this. I would also do the trip before relations improve with the USA as the american corporations will change the landscape of Cuba forever. Bart Bycroft, Salina, KS

FLYING San Juan Yachting Adventure September 19-26, 2014 We are so excited about this trip we can barely wait! There are several feet of snow on the ground (7’-8’ piles on the edges of the driveways) and it has been below zero up here in WI for what seems like 2 months now and the mere thought of being outside on LIQUID water makes me giddy! Fly privately into KBLI (Bellingham) or commercially into KSEA (Seattle) or drive or take a train or a bus, or walk…Just get yourself and your family to the Bellingham, WA in time to depart on what will be one of the most memorable charters of your life! Night 1 – Friday, September 19th – Sailing School and Pre-Board – Bellingham, WA Night 2 – Saturday, September 20th - Arrive Spencer Spit State Park, Lopez Island Night 3 – Sunday, September 21st – Arrive Friday Harbor, San Juan Island Night 4 – Monday, September 22nd – Family Fun Day, San Juan Island So what else is there to do on San Juan Island outside of Friday Harbor you ask? Well, let’s see…There is the Lime
Kiln State Park on the western side of the island (and just across the Straight from Vancouver Island) that is world famous for watching the Orca Whales. We have biked here from Friday Harbor, but most “sane” people would probably rent a motorized version of transportation (Scooters are fun!) to travel them around the island. Roche Harbor is another neat spot that really ought to be appreciated. I have already been called and asked, “Why is Roche Harbor not on the list of places to overnight?” The answer is because it is on the opposite side of the Island as well, and a bit more difficult to get to when sailing. It is, however, a great place to watch the Rich and Famous. Here is where you will see MANY yachts and a perhaps a few mega-yachts. There is a small restaurant/bar here and an airpark with a private strip if you are like me and love the idea of having your plane at your place! Whatever you decide to do on the island, don’t forget to stop and eat the wild blackberries that grow all over!

MARCH 2014
FLYING FDA Giving Back
ack B g vin i AG FD
Here are a couple of dental mission opportunities you may have missed that can happen right in your own "backyard". My entire office staff has donated their time to participate in "Give Kids a Smile Day" in our community for the past 7 years. We do this during Dental Health Month in February. We have found that the school nurses do an excellent job of identifying kids that are not receiving necessary dental care due to financial constraints in their family. Many dental offices across the country also participate in this program by donating dental exams, x-rays, prophys and fluoride. I would encourage all dental offices to go one step further and provide the kids with the recommended dental care for free. The reality is that most of the kids will never get the recommended treatment completed for many reasons, but cost is the primary issue. A few years ago, our office decided to limit the number of kids seen to about 20 and try to complete as much of their needed treatment as possible on "Give Kids a Smile Day". If all treatment was not able to be completed on that day, we appoint them on our regular schedule at a later date and complete the treatment at no charge. Another program that I would like to highlight that our office participates in on a regular basis is Dental Lifeline Network (formerly Donated Dental Services). The patients that have been referred to us by Dental Lifeline have been truly in need and they have all been very appreciative for the dental care they received. All of the patients we have seen have been treated with complete or partial dentures and the Dental Labs have been very generous in also donating their services. As you can see from the photo, it was a slow news day in Burlington, Iowa, when the photographer from the local newspaper showed up at our office. He seemed to take hundreds of photos and I am not sure why he selected this one, but it is a very cute picture of the little girl getting her first dental exam. Dave Camp
