Boy Scout Troop 125 Celebrates Scout Sunday with Commack United Methodist Church

The 12th point of the Scout Law is “A Scout is Reverent.” Boy scouts, leaders and their families from Troop 125 gathered to celebrate a special Scout Sunday service at Commack United Methodist Church on Sunday, February 2. CUMC was one of many houses of worship to host local Cub Scout Packs, Boy Scout Troops and Explorers who attended and participated in the annual “A Scout is Reverent” recognitions during the Scout Sunday Services at various local Catholic and Protestant Churches and the Jewish Scout Sabbath services at area temples and synagogues during the month of February.

Historian’s Corner Submitted by John Muller, Church Historian

The Harneds Charlie Harned operated the saw mill on Harned Road and New Highway with his older broker Amos. He then passed the family business on to his two sons Doug and Dave. The Harned family is one of Commack's older families having first settled in the Winnecomac area during the late 1780's. The current family house and farm is over 150 years old and was established by John Wicks c.1850. Q. When did the Harneds come to Commack? A. They tell me the original house was on New Highway where it meets Vet's Hwy. It was on the right where the pine trees are now. There was my grandmother she ran everything. She was a widow for thirty or forty years. They had a farm over on Florida Ave. That was the other road that ran straight through down the big hill on the other side. But they closed the road and put a factory there (Lilly Tulip). The Harneds had big houses on that road. My godmother bought the house from the Wicks. She had four children, two of which had T. B. She took them out west in a covered wagon all by herself, but they both died in their early twenties while living out in Arizona. She kept a diary the whole time she was out there, even how much money she spent on things. There was one note where she bought a ribbon for her hair for a nickel. Then she came back and raised the other two children, my father, Herbert and his sister Sadie (Moreland). Q. What is the history of the property? A. There were about 82 acres originally. My brother Amos had the half where the mill is. I had the half down the road on the right side. That's what the town took first to develop. Then they took some land from my brother for the Wood Park Elementary School. After he died they took another piece for the Saw Mill Jr. High School from my daughter-in-law. They wanted to take everything but the historical society stopped them. They still hurt the mill because they took away my back lot (LILCO trail) where I stored my logs that I was working with, but we managed.

Q. When did the saw mill begin? A. The saw mill was started by my brother Amos. I would say that was about 1928 or 1929. He started it just as a side thing, then it built up. I used to work there as a kid when I was going to high school. All the time it was growing bigger. Then the war came and it grew more because we supplied a lot of wood for the mine sweepers being built in Greenport. That was our steady customer. They built about all the mine sweeps for the war right in that little shipyard. I can remember this one old guy there in the shipyard that was bent over like a pretzel from making the in splits for the boats. We would bring him a piece of wood and he would hoe it all out, and it would fit perfectly. He must have been eighty years old. I mostly supplied shipyards on the south shore from Lindenhurst on down, never on the north shore. Q. When was the big hurricane? A. That was 1938; I was out in California and had to come home. I was on a six month honeymoon when the storm came and I had to go back. I was going to get work out there but the storm came and the mill got real busy. Q. Where did you get your trees from? A. It's all local from the island, except the pine which comes from up state. They still get it from the same place I used to buy it. The oak is from here with all the developing going on. It cost the developers too much to haul the wood to the dumps so Doug came with his big green truck and takes it for free. You use the good wood and the rest you sell as firewood. He has a guy there right now on the back lot selling the firewood. He has five guys working for him. It's a business and we are the last ones doing it. There are some things they do down there that you just can't have done anywhere else. We are the last ones. Dave is in the barn with his tools and he can make anything. Old molding he can make them. He even makes these antique mantels now. You bring him a picture and he can make it. He once brought one of those old Century speed boats and rebuilt the whole thing.

Continued from previous page... Q. What school did you attend? A. My mother went to the one room school house. That was the South School. We still have the bell from it. She was the one who got to ring the bell when school started. I went to the Commack school that was across from the fire home. That was grade one and two. Then they built the big brick one, the Marion Carll School. When I graduated there were eight boys and three girls in my class. I went on to Northport High School after that and graduated. When I was in high school I pitched on the baseball team. We won the county championship that was pretty good. That was the only sport my mother let me play after school because there was too much work to be done. She knew how much I loved baseball that she would let me play all day every Sunday during the summer. I got accepted to Princeton University after taking the test but my mother was against it. My father died when I was about ten and my mother needed me here so I couldn't go. But I passed the test that was cod. In school I took all the math and history classes because I wanted to be an engineer. Q. Who were your School teachers in Commack? A. Miss Clerk 1 & 2. Miss Hubbs, 3 & 4. Miss Dolittle, 5 & 6. There was also a Miss Cavalairy , and Miss Johnson. The principal was Miss Lounsberry, she also taught made 7 & 8. Then she married and became Mrs. Fibbin. She really got us ready for high school with all the math and algebra She was a good teacher, she took a real interest in the students. When we played basketball during lunch she would eat her sandwich real fast and then come and referee the game.

Flowers Bring Smile to 72 Faces 30 individuals sent flowers to their Valentines to support our Youth Group’s Flower-gram fundraiser. Those flowers brought smiles and brightened the days of 72 or more people. Our delivery teams saw first hand what receiving a flower can mean! Thank you to everyone who participated. In addition to the sharing of love, you helped our youth raise $205 which goes to offset the cost of our events, especially the retreats. With many of our families having more than one child in the youth group, your generosity helps everyone who wants to participate, can do so.

Souper Bowl Raised $341 The coins were clanking into our pots after our congregation heard from our Shuffling Chef, Lindsay, about the secret ingredient to making soup. She was interviewed by Toma Mato (aka Sarah White) and Grenna Pepper (aka Amanda Simco). The pots passed by Tom White and his cousin Derek along with the other children of the congregation netted us $341. And that was a lot of coins. Here is the breakdown: 448 in quarters = $112 330 dimes = $33.30 228 nickels = $11.40 630 pennies =- $6.30 $1, $5 bills = $178 The money raised will go to purchase peanut butter and jelly in the late summer and early fall when supplies are at their lowest. Thank you everyone who contributed.

13 youth and 6 adults had a great time at our Roller skating Night in January. Everyone found their “rolling” legs after a few rounds of the rink and also enjoyed the all you can eat pizza and free tokens for the games! For those that couldn’t join us, the consensus is “Let’s Do This Again”. We hope you can join us the next time!

Theo’s Sunday School Corner What’s your attitude? During the Month of January, we learned to have a -ATTITUDE! We had a variety of lessons that culminated in focusing on caring for others by making dried soup mixes on Souper Bowl Sunday. We also learned how everyday objects and food can help us remember to have a -ATTITUDE! Do you remember all of the beatitudes? Here they are in easy to understand wording. Be happy when you are poor in spirit, because then you will find that your riches are in the kingdom of heaven. (Remember this every time you hold a penny). Be happy when you feel you have lost what is most dear to you, because it is then that you will feel the love of the One who is the dearest to you. (Remember this every time you use salt – tears are salty!) Be happy with what you have, because then you will find that your heavenly Father provides everything that you need. (Other versions use words meek & mild, bananas are mild for your stomach; remember this beatitude when eating a banana). Be happy when you are hungry for the things of God, because then you will find that only He can satisfy. (Remember this when you eat a Hersey’s Kiss. Promises used to be sealed with a kiss; this will help you remember God’s promise to keep you satisfied with what you NEED!) Be happy when you are caring for others, because it is in caring for others that you will find that you have a heavenly Father who cares for you. Be happy when your heart is right with God, because it is then that you will see that God is at work in the world around you. (Remember these when you eat a pretzel to remind you of God’s loving arms wrapped around you and that you need to share that love!) Be happy when you help others to get along peacefully with one another, because it is then that you will know the peace that comes from being a part of the family of God. (Think peaceful bliss and this beatitude when eating the most simplest of ice cream flavors – vanilla!) Be happy when others treat you badly because you follow me, because your reward will be great in heaven. (When you see or eat gummy bears or hug a teddy bear, remember this one.)

Boy Scout Troop 125’s Eagle Scout Thomas James TJ began scouting in first grade when he joined Cub Scout Pack 329 (Commack) as a Tiger Scout and continued until he earned the Arrow of Light and 'crossed over' to boy scouts. As a member of Troop 125 for 7 years, he has held various leadership positions including patrol leader, assistant patrol leader and scribe. TJ is also an Ordeal Member of the Order of the Arrow, the National Scouting Honor Camping Society. "I have gone on amazing trips through the troop as well. From white water rafting on the Hudson River, to rock climbing at Harriman State Park, to sailing in the Florida Keys at the Florida National High Adventure Sea Base, Boy Scouts has provided me with opportunities I would never have been able to experience without scouts." Little Shelter Rescue Center in Huntington Benefits from project by Boy Scout Troop 125's Newest Eagle Scout Thomas James (TJ) Passaro became Boy Scout Troop 125’s (Commack) 93rd Eagle Scout on October 22, 2013. An Eagle Court of Honor, celebrating this achievement was held on January 11, 2014 at the Commack United Methodist Church. For his Eagle Leadership Service Project, TJ constructed stone garden walls around three neglected areas at Little Shelter Rescue Center in Huntington. TJ said, "My Eagle project was one of my most beneficial scouting experiences. It taught me how to effectively plan and budget a project, something I had never done before. He earned a total of 35 merit badges (21 of which are necessary to obtain the rank of Eagle).

A senior at Commack High School, TJ has had many academic accomplishments including being a Carson Scholarship Recipient, National Merit Commended Scholar, National Honor Society member, member of the Top Cohort and is an International Baccalaureate Diploma Candidate (a highly regarded world-wide recognized achievement, a program which only a few districts throughout Long Island offer and from that only a very small percentage of students earn this achievement). TJ is planning on attending college and majoring in computer science with ambitions of working as a computer scientist. He commented, “In a few short months, I will be 18 and age out of Troop 125. I will have the skills, memories and friends I gained through Troop 125 for the rest of my life. The newest Eagle Scout is the son of Iris and Thomas Passaro and brother to Caitlin, Brianna, and Ryan. The Passaro's reside in Commack.
