“The Beauty of Abiding Faith, Hope and Love” (1 Corinthians 13:13) Gleaning from 1 Corinthians Series: Gleanings from Paul’s Epistles Introduction: From a distance of two thousand years, the early churches may look beautiful but close up they look far short of what we imagine. Ephesians 5: 25-27 “Husbands, love your wives, just as Christ also loved the church and gave Himself up for her, so that He might sanctify her (i.e. the church), having cleansed her by the washing of water with the word, that He might present to Himself the church in all her glory, having no spot or wrinkle or any such thing; but that she would be holy and blameless.”

I. Introduction to Paul’s First Epistle to the Corinthian Church A. Concerning the Ancient City of Corinth The city was well-known for its abuses, corruption, debauchery, drunkenness, vice and rampant immorality. The ancient Greek world coined the term “corinthianize” to speak of the vilest of activities. B. The First Letter to the Corinthian Church This epistle was written around 55 AD, just a few years after Paul planted the church. A delegation from Corinth had come to Paul at Ephesus to consult him about some very serious problems in the Church at Corinth. So Paul uses this opportunity to write about a number of matters related to what was expected of Christ’s Church 1 Corinthians 4:21 “What do you desire? Shall I come to you with a rod, or with love and a spirit of gentleness?” C. Overview of 1 Corinthians “The Apostle Paul’s Beauty Treatments for Christ’s Earthly Church”

II. A Special Message from One Portion of 1 Corinthians 1 Corinthians 13:13 “But now faith, hope, love, abide these three...” abide = Greek: meno = dwell, live, remain Faith, hope and love represent the INNER BEAUTY of God’s people and therefore attract people with the VISIBLE BEAUTY of Christ’s Church 1 Thessalonians 1:2-3 “We give thanks to God always for all of you, making mention of you in our prayers; constantly bearing in mind your work of faith and labor of love and steadfastness of hope in our Lord Jesus Christ in the presence of our God and Father...”

Beauty Mark #1. Walking by Abiding Faith pistis (verb: pisteuo) = believe, trust, place confidence in 1 Corinthians 2:5; 16:13; 2 Corinthians 5:7 Matthew 19:26 “The things impossible with men are possible with God.” Hebrews 11:1 “Now faith is the assurance of things hoped for, the conviction of things not seen.” “Abiding faith is taking ownership of the reality that my God can do anything and then it is acting upon those realities before they happen.” • Self-satisfaction and complacency hinder our abiding faith • Fear and doubt hinder our abiding faith Daniel 11:32 "… the people who know their God will display strength and take action.”

Beauty Mark #2. Waiting in Abiding Hope elpis (verb: elpidzo) = hope/expectation/confidence “Abiding hope is the eager expectation that God will do what He promised in the future and then it is living as if it will happen today.” Maranatha = “The Lord is Coming Soon!” cf. 2 Tim 3:1-5 2 Corinthians 3:12 “Therefore, since we have such a hope, we are very bold.”

Beauty Mark #3. Working in Abiding Love agape (verb: agapao) = love/value/place worth on someone 1 Corinthians 6:19 “You have been bought with a price...” Romans 5:8 “But God demonstrates His own love toward us, in that while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us.” 2 Corinthians 4:7 “But we have this treasure in earthen vessels, so that the surpassing greatness of the power will be of God and not from ourselves...” cf. 1 Cor. 13:1-13 “Abiding love is recognizing the value God places on a person and then it is acting upon that value with self-sacrificial service and God-ordained fellowship.” • Selfishness stifles abiding love (2 Cor. 8:1-5) • Fear stifles abiding love (2 Tim. 1:7) • Lack of forgiveness stifles abiding love (Eph. 4:32) • Overemphasis on doctrine stifles abiding love (1 Cor. 8:1; 13:1-3, 13) 1 Corinthians 16:14 “Let all that you do be done in love.” 1 Corinthians 13:13 “But now faith, hope, love, abide these three; but the greatest of these is love.” Conclusion: Beauty Mark #1. Walking by Abiding Faith Beauty Mark #2. Waiting in Abiding Hope Beauty Mark #3. Working in Abiding Love What happens when we live by abiding faith, hope and love?
