Norfolk Minorities Achievement and Attainment Services (MAAS) are pleased to announce Professor Stephen Krashen as their keynote speaker. He is one of the most respected academics in the field of language acquisition and literacy in the world and has not spoken in the UK for more than a decade.

This conference will equip delegates with the knowledge, understanding and tools to raise the achievement and attainment levels of all pupils. The programme will further enable you to: • r aise the achievement of all pupils, not just those for whom English is an additional language, across all subject areas in schools and other educational settings •e  stablish or further develop a whole school approach towards promoting effective language acquisition and the development of academic language skills •p  romote reading as a pleasurable activity leading directly to improved literacy levels for all pupils • r eflect on key pedagogical themes and recent research on language acquisition and literacy development •m  ake informed decisions on how best to establish a pedagogically sound learning environment.

Additional presentations and workshops will be run by leading practitioners in the field of language and literacy with specific focus on maths, science and developing reading for all pupils, especially pupils for whom English is an additional language.

This conference will benefit: Head teachers and senior leaders, Primary, Secondary and post-16 teachers, EAL coordinators and teachers, Educators with responsibility for literacy development, MFL teachers, English language ESOL / TEFL teachers, University lecturers, trainers and tutors, NQTs, PGCE students and trainee teachers who wish to hear first-hand from one of the world’s leading educationalist, anyone with an interest in education.

You will also be given hands on practical strategies for implementing a whole school approach to language development and literacy in core subjects, hearing from distinct schools of thought on how this can be achieved.

Keynote Speakers and Workshop Leaders Professor Stephen Krashen is professor emeritus at the University of Southern California. He is a linguist, educational researcher, and activist, specialising in theories of language acquisition and development. His research has focused on non-English and bilingual language acquisition and reading and its effects on language acquisition and academic success. Professor Krashen is best known for developing the first comprehensive theory of second language acquisition, introducing the concept of sheltered subject matter teaching, and as the co-inventor of the Natural Approach to foreign language teaching. He holds a PhD in Linguistics from UCLA, was the 1977 Incline Bench Press champion of Venice Beach and holds a black belt in Tae Kwon Do. His recent papers can be found at www.sdkrashen.com. Brian Dare is an educational consultant with the Government of South Australia for language and literacy across all levels of schooling. He is one of the writers and tutor trainers of a number of professional development programs including the How Language Works (HLW) course, the Teaching ESL Students in Mainstream Classrooms (TESMC) course, the Literacy for Learning (LfL) course and the Teaching Young Children in Multilingual Contexts (TYCEMC) course, all of which have been taken up internationally. Brian has a keen interest in the role of language in teaching and learning across the curriculum. He has delivered presentations and workshops on the language of History, Science, Art, Mathematics and Geography. Christine Chen is an experienced Teaching and Learning Advisor. She has supported numerous schools, successfully, specialising in English, quality first teaching, curriculum development, growing more-able learners and leadership coaching. Complementing her highly regarded schools support, Christine writes for Oxford University Press, Pearson, Harper Collins and Teach Primary. She has recently co-authored Grammar and Spelling Bug: an on-line grammar and spelling resource and OUP’s Project X Teaching Handbooks for Years 3-4 and Years 5-6, as well as English tips for Collins Big Cat online support.

Catharine Driver is an independent consultant and trainer for English as an Additional Language and academic literacy. She has wide experience of working in multilingual schools and local authorities across the UK. She was Head of EAL in a London Secondary school for six years and has been a school improvement consultant and MA course tutor. Catharine recently worked as senior adviser for the British Council EAL Nexus project writing and developed training materials and resources for their website. Catharine is an executive member of NALDIC and edits and writes for many different audiences.

Mark Sims is currently Ofsted’ National Adviser for EAL and has been an HMI since 2004, leading on section 5 and 8 inspections and conducting surveys such as Every Language Matters published in 2008 and EAL good practice surveys. Before joining Ofsted full time he was Head of the Ethnic Minority Achievement Service and a senior local authority adviser in Cardiff where he also trained with Ofsted in 1997 to become a specialist team inspector with responsibility for EAL, Race Equality and Community Languages. Prior to that he taught English, Urdu and EAL in Oldham.

Manny Vazquez has worked in the field of EAL since 1979 and, following his work as Head of Service, he joined HLS Ltd. He is also a visiting lecturer for MA, PGCE and B Ed courses, and external examiner for an MA in English language teaching. He has been a speaker at international TESOL conferences and he has contributed to a range of professional journals, books and publications on the themes of language/content integration and EAL assessment. He developed DfE materials on EAL and EAL assessment for the QCA and was part of the Pan London EAL strategy for the National Strategy.
