Mission Statement Mission Statement: Provide relevant learning opportunities that develop adaptable, persistent and self-directed learners capable of creativity, collaboration, communication, and critical thinking necessary to overcome complex challenges.

Superintendent's Highlights Lyon County School District, with over 8,500 students and 1,100 staff members is the fourth largest school district in Nevada. LCSD is comprised of 18 schools located in five unique attendance areas including Dayton, Fernley, Silver Springs, Smith Valley and Yerington. Each school boasts highly qualified instructional leaders accompanied by caring and dedicated staff, who work tirelessly to ensure the learning needs of each student are realized. The district motto of “Every Student…Every Classroom…Every Day” comes to life when you step into the classroom and see students engaged in rigorous learning opportunities. Lyon County School District is the only school district in Nevada to achieve the designation of “School System Accreditation Quality Achievement” through AdvancED® and the Northwest Accreditation Commission. This means that every school in the district (not just the high schools) met the rigorous standards necessary to receive this designation. As a result, all students are able to receive a world-class education while attending schools in the Lyon County School District.

Highlights of Student and Staff Accomplishments: All schools including elementary, middle and high, are nationally accredited through AdvancEd. Partnering with Western Nevada College allowed 118 students to have dual enrollment and these students will receive high school and college credit concurrently. In addition, 31 of these students will receive an Associate’s Degree in May 2017. A Healthy Communities Coalition partnership secures grant funded social workers and coordinators to help students and their families receive medical, dental, vision and mental health services. Boys and Girls Club in collaboration with the schools provide enriching before and after school programs for students. The graduating Class of 2016 earned nearly $3,000,000 in scholarship funding, which includes National Merit and Presidential Scholars. All schools have implemented a positive, supportive, and safe learning environment emphasizing social emotional learning through school-based initiatives, to promote a culture of respect. All schools honor the importance of family engagement through a variety of opportunities, including Booster Clubs, PTA’s, PTO’s, Parent Universities, Watch Dog Dads, Family and Science Nights, Student-Led Conferences, etc. Students and staff have raised tens of thousands of dollars and donated thousands of hours to support local families, charities, food banks, blood drives and other community needs. Students and staff honor veterans, first responders and other inspiring community members through a variety of school events. Pre-Kindergarten continues to offer services to over 300 eligible students, enhancing their opportunity for school success. Three teams from two schools competed at the Lego Robotics competition at UNR. Over 20 middle and high school students qualified and competed in the State of Nevada Thespian Finals in Las Vegas for the 2nd straight year as well as 1 qualifications for national and international recognition. Manufacturing Lab implemented at high school to allow students to receive WNC Manufacturing Course Certification.

Staff awards include, but are not limited to: Presidential Award for Excellence in Mathematics and Science Teaching (PAEMST) NASB Administrator of the Year NASB Innovative Teacher of the Year Nevada Representative on the Southwest Conference on Language Teaching (SWCOLT) Board of Directors

District Communication Efforts Lyon County School District’s Parental Involvement Policy, IICD, recognizes involvement as key to academic achievement. Parents and community members are active participants in the educational process. As partners in education, frequent two-way communication is fostered. The district has developed a communication plan that can be accessed at https://drive.google.com/file/d/0B3Ch_GpIxUi7cFFuMEJmaHpOUm8/view In addition to this work, the district uses the following methods to communicate: LCSD utilizes Infinite Campus Messenger, a web-based communication system that allows the school to better relay scheduling of events, student absences and other important school information. Schools use Infinite Campus Messenger to notify parents of emergency situations, upcoming events, student attendance, and to invite their participation. The Superintendent and District staff attend community meetings to encourage feedback and foster positive working relationships. All schools have Parent Advisory Committees that meet regularly to address issues impacting students, parental involvement, provide parents with training and ensure that parents are involved in the development of each school’s parent involvement policy. The list of activities to encourage parental involvement in LCSD includes: Parent Summits, Parent Advisory Councils, disseminating information through brochures, holding parent teacher conferences, conducting workshops for parents, sending home regular correspondence through newsletters and grade reports, providing families with support services, maintaining open and inviting facilities, and including parents in the decision making process as appropriate. LCSD recognizes the extreme importance of each parent’s role in the success of our students’ academic achievement and their

ongoing learning. It is an expectation of LCSD that every teacher, during the first month of school, makes initial contact with the parents of their students to establish an effective school to home partnership. The LCSD website and Facebook page contain timely parent information and links for parents to reach individual school websites and Facebook pages within LCSD. Parents and community members regularly participate and provide input to critical committees such as: • District Performance Plan Committee • School Performance Plan Committee • Career and Technical Education Committee • Parent Involvement Committee (Title I) • PTSA Additionally, all parents may have access to their own child's grades, attendance, and school bulletin through LCSD's student information system known as Infinite Campus (IC). Parents are also encouraged to email administrators and teachers through IC as a method of keeping in touch with the educators in their children’s lives. District and school publications provide important information and a means to communicate with District personnel. LCSD, in compliance with Nevada Senate Bill 214 Section 17, provides the Nevada Code of Honor and the Educational Involvement Accord to parents. The Honor Code and Accord support state Parent Involvement Policies and the federal Elementary and Secondary Education Act. The Educational Involvement Accord and Student Code of Honor reinforce District expectations for student achievement and behavior. These documents can be found on the LCSD website. LCSD provides timely and appropriate communication to parents as required by federal law and state statute.

Discipline To insure that all allegations of bullying are investigated and dealt with, the District has provided Deans at each elementary school and Assistant Principals at all middle and high schools. All administrators have participated in Training to identify both bullying and cyber-bullying, how to investigate allegations, how to document allegations, and appropriate consequences for students who bully. Each school has a progressive discipline policy which addresses bullying and cyber-bullying. Each school's Progressive Discipline Policy can be found on their web-site. Consequences are consistent throughout the district. All schools participate in programs to help create schools that are bully-free zones. In addition, each school uses other activities such as “Be Kind” to promote tolerance and empathy among students. The district has also provided training for administrators in the "Developmental Assets" and other Social Emotional Learning opportunities to ensure our schools are providing all students a world class education in a positive, safe and respectful learning environment that prepares them to be successful in college, career and as citizens.
