Write the equation of the tangent line to y = x2 at (1, 1).   

Graph both the function and the tangent Line by hand. Now graph both of the functions in your calculator and go back to  your standard window. Zoom in 3 separate times around the point (1,1).  

What do you notice as you zoom in around (1, 1)?

Why does this matter?

If a function is locally linear (looks like a line as you continue to  zoom in) what does that tell you about the function?

Finding a linear approximation @ x = a 1.  Take the derivative

2.  Find the equation of the tangent line           If f(x) is differentiable @ x = a, then the approximating function 

is called the linearization of f(x) @ x = a.

L(x) is the standard linear approximation of f(x) @ x (center of  approximation)
